So she does. But still, it's a matter of scale. I know of a guy who was so fat he couldn't even climb into a car for fear of getting stuck. At over 6 feet (180cm) height, he seemed almost as fat as this little girl. His weight? A bit over 160Kg. So how could a 7 year old weigh 200Kg? She'd have to look even fatter than Jabba the Hutt, at which point she'd suffocate under her own weight.Darth Wong wrote:She can't really move properly under her own power. Jesus Christ, that's a girl?
I saw something about this on television last night, but I only caught the tailend so no idea about many of the details.
Apparently she is a celebrity in her Russian town. I wonder why- maybe because she alone sustains all the food merchants there.

The poor girl very likely has Prader-Willi if she able to process huge mountains of surgery, salty and fatty shite in a few sittings without stopping; the child's brain does not seem to have an "off" switch for eating food and the unthinking mother is mindlessly accommodating her daughter's clinical gluttony. And there was a relatively recent Channel 4 documentary about Prada-Willi sufferers and like this poor girl (who is inflicted with Prada-Willi anyway) they too cannot stop eating and end up grotesquely obese in their childhood or early adolescents.
And the Channel 5 documentary with the fat Russian child was slightly different; the boy (?) was obese at such a young age, but he was surprisingly strong and healthy for his size and was not as devastatingly impeded by his fat as the Australian girl is (not unlike a Sumo-Wrestler or Andre the Giant).

Man, I must be stupid. I didn't realise my country (Australia) had a city called Chicago.

Anywho... This mother really needs to be arrested for doing this to a kid, it's no better than starving a kid and making them skin and bone at the same age, hey, at least thats recoverable.

She does look a lot like Jabba the Hutt, in addition to moving like him. And I've known adults who weigh over 400 lbs. They can still walk around on their own power with little difficulty. I don't think the article mentions where the obese girl came from, which is where my confusion arose from, but it was also impossible to discern the accents beneath the very, very loud German overdubbing and news narration, for a moment I swore I heard the obese girl's mum speak in a Australian accent - but why is it a German news program reporting this and not FOX or CNN? And obesity is issue in any developed or semi-developed country anway, with the Polynesians having a severe obesity problem as well (and obese women seem to outnumber obese men, although that is due to child rearing).Resinence wrote: Man, I must be stupid. The girl obviously has a very severe clinical eating disorder (Prader-Willi) and I cannot fathom why that stupid, stupid mother keeps on cramming junkfood down her gigantically fat daughter's gullet - I agree that permanent physiological damage has been inflicted on the daughter, with the possibilty of a shortened lifespan and that the mother is a criminally unfit parent.Anywho... She cannot even sit up properly and looks like a two meter wide blob when seated - as mentioned before you get Sumo-Wrestlers that are obese, yet they are deceptively agile and strong.Darth Wong wrote: She does look a lot like Jabba the Hutt, in addition to moving like him. Well, maybe those adults have stronger muscles or something (think individual variations). I suppose it's possible after all - I can't say I've met many obese people. If I make it sound outlandish, it's probably because I'm still shocked.Darth Wong wrote:She does look a lot like Jabba the Hutt, in addition to moving like him. Actually, the adults prpably gained their weight slowly over say 20 years allowing their frames to adapt to the increased weight. Their muscles have had time to adapt to the increase gradually as well as has their skeleton.Hugh wrote:Well, maybe those adults have stronger muscles or something (think individual variations). The fact of the matter in this case is this a gross case of overeating that seems to be encouraged by her irresponable mother.

The difference here is that the girl became life threateningly corpulant at a still very young phase of her life and she is still far from fully developed, with the very thick rolls of fat pressing down on her very soft bone frame and straining her smaller heart. Of course people biologically react very differently to food consumption in the same way people react to alcoholic beverages.

The only people I'm familiar with who've eaten a comparable number of calories are the explorers of the Lewis & Clark expedition:
Of course these guys were walking across a continent...

Fighting the Columbia rapids before the installation of the dam and lock system on that river would unquestionably have been the sort of thing you could expend 10,000 calories in a day doing. These guys were, of course, also at times hauling more than a hundred pounds on their backs up mountains, hacking clear their own trails for doing so, in addition to marching at a stiff pace the whole time.SancheztheWhaler wrote:The only people I'm familiar with who've eaten a comparable number of calories are the explorers of the Lewis & Clark expedition:"When game was plentiful, expedition members would consume between eight and ten pounds a day, approximately eating 12,000 to 15,000 calories a day."

Even the Tour de France doesn't hold a candle to those early exploratory missions. Of course, even then, a lot of that had to get stored as fat--for the periods when you had to do everything that I've just described above with no food at all.
That's really the problem with modern humans. We're not given the chance to starve after our gluttony like our ancestors until recently were.

I once half-watched a reality show on PBS called Frontier House, where four families were each given a cabin in Montana, and told to grow/collect enough supplies to get them through the winter. More than one of the men dropped weight very quickly, until they weighed about 120lbs. A figure which the shows naraitor told the audience was in line with the enlistment figures for farmhands from the Civil War. Really makes you appreciate just how recent this problem is. By Civil War standards, I'm overweight at somthing like 155 lbs.The Duchess of Zeon wrote:Fighting the Columbia rapids before the installation of the dam and lock system on that river would unquestionably have been the sort of thing you could expend 10,000 calories in a day doing. Back on topic, this is nuts. Child protective services should be all over this woman like white on rice, so where the heck are they? Nobody that age should be eating half as much as she does, and it's fairly obvious even to the blind that somthing is terribly wrong. If that girl walked into a restraunt that I worked at, I wouldn't take an order for her. She's had too much to eat, and if I lost my job because of it, I'd consider it worth my stand. Someone needs to get some sense in that family, or maybe some liposuction.

The mother's behaviour and what she says reminds me very much of the introduction to Augustus Gloop.
The quote is from wiki. I don't have my copy of the book with meIn the original novel, Augustus Gloop is shown as a fat child whose mother encourages his eating habits, saying that eating is his hobby, and that his habits are better than him being a hooligan. She is blissfully unaware of the results of unhealthy eating, thinking that Augustus wouldn’t eat if he didn’t need to. Augustus is described as an enormous boy who has fat bulging from every fold, with two greedy eyes peering out of his dough-ball of a head.

That reminds me of how, when I watch certain Civil War movies (such as Gettysburg) that rely heavily on volunteer re-enactors, I get taken out of the picture when I see an overweight Union or Confederate soldier. Some of these guys have obviously loaded up on the Twinkies, and they look totally out of place in an army that has marched thousands of miles on foot.Vehrec wrote:I once half-watched a reality show on PBS called Frontier House, where four families were each given a cabin in Montana, and told to grow/collect enough supplies to get them through the winter. I couldn't find any relevant information in a google search. But I believe I saw recently in a daytime talk show that she is now 10 years old, has been in a weight loss clinic for two years now, and has lost about half the weight. She can now walk, but has to use a walker due to the severe bow in her legs. Of course I could be wrong, but that is what I remember.

God that's disgusting. Her parents should be shot. Where's child protective services when you need them?
It also reminds me of a convention I attended when some economists were looking at the causes of obesity in American children. They showed their summary statistics, and everyone went "holy SHIT!" The average BMI was slightly over 20, with a standard deviation of 4.3, and the max score was north of 50! Someone talked about how people always make fun of fat children, which prompted one person in attendance to shout out "at least the seven sigma fat kids," and got a roar of applause from the rest of the assembled.
edit: Jesus, the mom's fat, too.

I vaguely recall from the Christmas Lectures a few years back that when Fiennes and Stroud walked across Antarctica they underwent the greatest sustained energy expenditure ever measured and were actually exerting more energy each day than they could digest even on a specially designed diet including huge amounts of fat (such as putting fat in their tea) and large amounts of sugars.
I experienced something a little like that a few years back when I cycled over to a campsite I’d got a job at in France and dropped a significant amount of weight over the few weeks it took me to get there, in part I expect because I was carrying a fair load of clothes for my stay so didn’t have room for a stove and so had a rather restricted diet which would have been unsustainable for a significantly longer trip. As it happened I’d had very little weight to lose before I started and was so thin after having got there that one of our clients thought I had leukaemia. That's really the problem with modern humans. We're not given the chance to starve after our gluttony like our ancestors until recently were.
