Transporters are Dangerous!!

Post by Dennis Toy »

I cannot believe people in the 24th century would step into a machine that turns someone into energy and back. This is equalivant to death, second there might be side effects no one detected. There should be questions where theological, philosophical and ethical and some tech.

First the Ethical

Ever wondered how does the transporters manage to restart life functions, as i can see if you use fission to take someone apart, you would kill that person. Use this analogy....Its inspired by another persons site that is linked to SD.Net

What if someone took a bomb and blew you to smithereens and about a week later someone came back and said they have a way to reconstruct you. It would be murder because the original you is dead and the reconstruct is a shell.

Theres one incident in star trek 1 the motion picture that emphasizes the dangers of teleportation. In the accident scene the transporters wasn't finished, 2 people appeared on the pad but partially transported. IN one scene, as the chief said one was forming, You could make out a partially reconstructed body of a woman. The woman then screamed as if she was in pain. I dont know whether it was the pain of being partially reconstructed and having one part of the body still in tranport or the terror of being trapped in a beam and not being able to get out while being in a state of flux. Now you see my emphesis...Transporters are dangerous.

Barclay was also afraid of transporters. Though his fear appeared to be irrational, every time he stepped on the pad something seemed to go wrong. :? Funny how that works.

In any case, Neelix freaked out for religious reasons when he died and was later revived. I wonder why he never objected to transporters.

People have acceped the "moral incorrectness" of transporters. In such a Communist society, they can't speak out against it.

They kind of were. On the other hand, if I had had as many crappy run-ins with a transporter as Reg. Barclay, I would be scared, too.

Yes, but they were made out to be irrational hacks, same with Barclay

That was one of things I liked about the Culture novels I've read. Every time someone was displaced (the equivalent of transporting there), the Mind doing it would remind them that there was a 1 in 63 million chance of being lost, pretty much without fail.

I'm sorry I don't see how it's unethical.....when it really doesn't kill you.
What if someone took a bomb and blew you to smithereens and about a week later someone came back and said they have a way to reconstruct you. It would be murder because the original you is dead and the reconstruct is a shell.
But this isn't true of transporters.....because Barclay was alive and aware through the entire process.

LOL this is great.....

The real problem was the system wasn't properly tested before hand. It wasn't configured correctly......and thus people died.

Any method of transportation can be dangerous if not in good working order. The transporter is not different.....obviously.

Yep, but remember that Culture displacers most definately don't work in the same way as ST transporters. Displacers just snip out the section of spacetime that the target is occupying and swap it , via hyperspace, with the destination section. Not nasty being vapourised (killed) and then reconstructed (new construct believes nothing happened...) (continuity problem, best explained here.. [url/] http://www.schlockmercenary.com/d/20010320.html[/url]

Conculsion, displacers don't kill you, just move you, and do so with a quick 'pop' effect (rather like Lost in Space!!!) rather than a slow shimmery one.

And I agree, ST transporters are ludicrously dangerous.. Rather like Holodecks.

Isn't that what you said?

Of course if could simply put you down, why do they need the transporter in the first place?

Presumably to pick you up again.

Isn't the transporter essentially a disnetergrator that reintregrates you back down on the surface...I've always wondered, when not suspending disbelief, how the transporter reintergrates your very thoughts, memories, etc. Why does it not reintregrate a mindless vegatable or something to that effect, or on an even more religious slant, does the transporter reintergrate the soul???

Is it really you rematerializing or a reasonable fascimile?

BTW in regard to Odan, he was a Trill, they couldn't transport, yet a few years later in DS9, Jadzia is beaming all over the place, no probs...GOTTA LOVE THAT AIR TIGHT CONTINUITY B&B.....

Well, our memories are actually nothing more than a very complex pattern of various chemicals and electric impulses in our brain... so technically you could reproduce them.
I would never ever in my life voluntarily use a transporter. I don't wan't to die to enable an exact clone of mine taking over my life!

And what of the soul in these transactions? Does your technological device trap it and store it like a sorcerer's wand, or is it lost, leaving the empty body to forever wander, lost and useless?
