B5 and Matrix similarities (Spoilers)

Post by Sir Sirius »

I was just watching "Into the Fire" and came to think how much the way it ends resembles the ending in the Matrix movies.

In both cases you have an ongoing war, several large battles building up to a final big one, but in the end the conflict is solved with new-agish philosiphy bable. A very dissapointing ending in both cases.

Sheridan: It's over because we've decided it's over!
Neo: Because I chooce to.
Me: Bleh and bleh.

Personaly I would have preferred a long war fought to the bitter end. Model the war a little after WW2 and make the Shadows the Nazi's, the Vorlon's the USSR, those of the YR that sided with Sheridan the Allies and the those that sided with the Shadows the other Axis nations (Centauri = Japan and so on). It would have been so cool to see 'The Light Side' coalition race the Vorlon's to capture Berl... Zha'ha'dum first.

Well we know the Shadows and Vorlons weren't really interested in taking each other over, and before "Into the Fire" the YR were getting bitchslapped. I can't think of any other way to end the conflict besides total annhilation.

LOL
The dialogue and plot in B5 make sense, in the Matrix they are nonsensical and worthless.

Ummm, see the point is that you change the story so that other endings are possible.

I wasn't comparing B5 to the steaming pile of shit that is Matrix in that sense, but the endings to both stories are a bit similar.

Well, it might sound similar, due to the fact that they both stem from a "Coming of age" base, but beyond that, it's iffy. Sheridan says it because he represents the youngsters that have grown up, gone to college, learned maturity and temperance, and are now gonna go have to live on their own. Neo does it because he's gained enough self-insight to be able to sacrifice himself for the greater good, and because the Wachowski brothers stuffed that shit in his mouth to spew...

You sort of missed the point, I wasn't talking about the similarities in the actual dialogue as much as I was talking about the unfortunate fact that the conflict was solved in both cases with discussion instead of combat.

Wars, battles and combat scenes > discussion and talk.

If they had chosen a side, they would have had the snot beaten out of them by the other.

I for one rather liked the ending of Into the Fire because both the Vorlons and the Shadows got chastised like the children they were.

Yeah, and how sweet were they when they were about to be taken beyond the rim, that shadow saying "So we won't be...alone?" to Lorien. Very sweet i thought.

But i thought the war ended too quickly, we should've seen some more planet killing and space battles, and then had ItF...perhaps had more first ones too, or gone into more detail about the different races involved, like i can't think of a time where we find out who the Kaspari(?) were (the ones who turn up in series 1 with a really strange looking ship with a detached electric green sphere as it's centre).

Kaspari
I'm not sure where that name came from but it's used to describe the Kirishiac, a once war like race that controlled a good chunk of the Milky Way before being defeated by an alliance of the Ancients.

I think you are talking about the Walkers of Sigma 957.

Well, whatever the race is that has ships like this.

No, i don't mean the walkers :P.

Actually, the lightwave site reminded me they're the ipsha, the kaspari battlesphere on that site is what i was getting my wires crossed with.
