Hmmm. Despite some errors, this has some nice common-sense answers to gaps in our knowledge of the SW galaxy. I'll probably use this in writing future fanfiction.

Curtis Saxton used footage from ROTJ and ESB to compare the Executor to nearby ISDs, and he came up with an estimated length of 17km. The 8km length comes from a poorly researched and erronious WEG source, and unfortunately has been heavily distributed throughout the EU.

I think Curtis Saxton is as good a Star Wars expert as their is, but his is pure speculation. I find it difficult to compare sizes of Imperator-Class Star Destroyers to Super-Class Star Destroyers by film footage. Although I suppose you can make a case for it, it's definately not an exact science. I noticed myself that in ESB the ISD's seem to be much smaller than the SSD's, perhaps smaller than the SSD, but I never presumed to question the EU on the point, mainly because you still have to take into effect camera angles and different elevation and distances from the camera each Star Destroyer was. I think I have to stick with the EU on this one and say the SSD is 8 kilometers long. Hey, I definately see where your coming from with your argument, but I think I'll go with the EU here instead of Saxton.
Besides, 17 kilometers? 8 kilometers is overkill enough.
It is, in fact, difficult to scale from movie footage. But Saxton took many different and independent scalings to arrive at his conclusion of ~17 kilometers.

When I say speculation I mean that he has no SOLID proof to back up his work. No canon prounouncements and no EU support. He's just a simple Warsie like the rest of us who seems to think he's been enlightened to a point that he judge a SSD to be 9 kilometers bigger than the EU tells us. Don't get me wrong, if he wants to think that way fine, but I definately will not accept his work as accurate in this situation.

I guess the films are less canon than the EU.
No canon prounouncements and no EU support.
You don't get more canon than the films.

Karrde, his scaling of canon is airtight. Did you read the link I gave you? If the EU claimed that the Millenium Falcon was 200 meters long, when it is obviously not, would you accept that and just say that everyone else was being arrogant? No! You're dealing with the exact same thing right here. Look at the pictures, for Christ's sake--the first one shows that's it's physically impossible for the Executor to be only five times as long as an ISD. One of the ISDs in that shot is CLOSER to the camera than the ISD, and it's still less than 1/5 (or even 1/8) the length of the larger vessel!

Not to mention, the art department people who built the models used to make the Executor shots said they scaled the Executor to be eleven times the length of the ISD model.
The Imperial cut scean for the computer game Rebellion has a 8 kilometer Executor with several correctly sized ISD's around it, and you can clearly see how distorted it is.

The canon pronounces it by showing it in such a way that he can measure it, so your statement is false. Unless you think the only canon evidence that's valid is flimsy, re-interpretable, subjective dialogue.
Are you incapable of trusting your own eyes and instincts, Talon? Will you prefer to believe a book that calls itself official even when its predictions can be tested and found wanting?
You should be Grovelling before ME, and ME only, instead of debating such
bullshit as WEG scaling figures!
WEG is best for showing the "feel" of the empire, not exact lengths of
certain ships.

Is it just me, or is Chapter 7 of the ISB messed up? Every time I click on it, it says I'm forbidden from accessing it. I don't have a problem getting into the other chapters.

Works fine for me
