Christ, it seems like the death rate is steadily increasing. I felt like there was a significantly longer gap between the first and the 2000th death than there was between the 2000th and the 3500th death. Longer than would be accounted for by the 500 body difference.

My home unit from Boise, now deployed over there, has now lost 6 men.
It is, from what I hear, very different from when I was there. Much meaner.

Something about Libertarianism always bothered me. Then one day, I realized what it was:
Libertarian philosophy can be boiled down to the phrase, "Work Will Make You Free."
In Libertarianism, there is no Government, so the Bosses are free to exploit the Workers.
In Communism, there is no Government, so the Workers are free to exploit the Bosses.
So in Libertarianism, man exploits man, but in Communism, its the other way around!
If all you want to do is have some harmless, mindless fun, go H3RE INST3ADZ0RZ!!
Grrr! Fight my Brute, you pansy!

This would also be true if there were a completely non-discriminatory draft. People would be less keen on going to war if they could no longer shove the responsibility off onto a small percentage of the nation's families.Elaro wrote:Ah yes. The rising death rate is not simply a change in our tactics, but also because our enemy is learning new and more effective tactics and techniques as well.
Too many funerals of young adults. Too many maimed. On both sides.

Now I did a job. I got nothing but trouble since I did it, not to mention more than a few unkind words as regard to my character so let me make this abundantly clear. I do the job. Here's to the 3500. The American news media would rather focus on missing white women, Paris Hilton and celebrity gossip, but others won't forget.

I'm at loss for words. I had no idea it had risen so quickly, and of late the news media has done a shamefully bad job of covering the actual conflict.

And, in addition to the American casualties, the 150th British soldier has also been killed.
To steal another man's words:
To steal another man's words:
Rupert Brooke wrote:If I should die, think only this of me:
That there's some corner of a foreign field
That is for ever England. There shall be
In that rich earth a richer dust concealed;
A dust whom England bore, shaped, made aware,
Gave, once, her flowers to love, her ways to roam,
A body of England's, breathing English air,
Washed by the rivers, blest by suns of home.
And think, this heart, all evil shed away,
A pulse in the eternal mind, no less
Gives somewhere back the thoughts by England given;
Her sights and sounds; dreams happy as her day;
And laughter, learnt of friends; and gentleness,
In hearts at peace, under an English heaven.

... Jesus.
A Government founded upon justice, and recognizing the equal rights of all men; claiming higher authority for existence, or sanction for its laws, that nature, reason, and the regularly ascertained will of the people; steadily refusing to put its sword and purse in the service of any religious creed or family is a standing offense to most of the Governments of the world, and to some narrow and bigoted people among ourselves.

They're making a very sharp point of avoiding it because they know if they did their job there'd be rioting on the streets demanding our withdrawal from Iraq, the ouster of Bush and Cheney, real briber^H^H^H^H^Hcampaign finance reform, drug/sex law reform, and any number of other things. That wouldn't sit too well with their corporate paymasters. Unfortunately for them, they're doomed to fighting only a mere delaying action with the Internet around.Noble Ire wrote:and of late the news media has done a shamefully bad job of covering the actual conflict.

I remember when this same value was at 2000.
It feels like a week ago.
A second moment also to the many more left scarred by their service. For the dead the war is over, for those with missing limbs, brain damage, PTSD the real struggle has yet to come.
