Talk about deja vu. Here in Sweden we have that system. It's based on the declared income of the person.weemadando wrote:Is it Finland, that has fines based on a persons income? So that a minimum wage workers traffic fine and a media moguls traffic fine would hurt both equally.
THAT is what I would like to see.

You're forgetting that the privilege of the wealthy is considered part of the American Dream. That's why no similar measure will ever be adopted in the US. Hell, I don't think they would even do that here in Canada, and we're a hippie commune by US standards. They use Canada as a bogeyman in elections: "Don't have universal health care! We'll end up like Canada!"Mange wrote:Talk about deja vu. Here in Sweden we have that system. Are rich people under some kind of persecution in Canada or something? I'll be the first to admit that I don't really know that much about Canada but from what I hear the average Canadian seems to be able to live out an average western lifestyle with few problems.Darth Wong wrote: You're forgetting that the privilege of the wealthy is considered part of the American Dream. Socialized healthcare is utterly antithetical to popular American conservatism; many conservatives believe that social programs keep people dependent by rewarding them with unearned resources. Conservatives believe that in a free market everyone has the opportunity to become rich, and as such the poor are merely undisciplined.Shroom Man 777 wrote:And what's so bad about Canada?
On that note, conservatives defend the rich because they believe that many rich people have demonstrated a superior ability to accumulate resources, and thus deserve to be rewarded for it; they therefore see progressive tax brackets (which I would imagine Canada implements to a greater extent than the US) as contrary to what they perceive as the natural and rightful elitism of the free market.
As for free market worship, that's stimulated by the conservative belief that free market competition maximized the production of wealth, which in turn is believed by conservatives to be good for everyone; contrast with regulators and bureaucrats, which conservatives perceive to establish a supra-marketplace elite that seeks to selfishly impose its own values on the market.
Summary: Conservatives have a distinctly myopic and/or distorted worldview.
