Yeah, but she did it while basically being a captive at a special weight-loss clinic. The only reason this works is that the parents can sign a waiver giving the clinic the ability to keep her inside. Since adults will never accept those kinds of involuntary restrictions, it doesn't work as well on them.

Actually, I'm sure that a lot of adults would initially accept those kinds of restrictions. A morbidly obese man may be serious about losing weight, but he might just not have the willpower. So if there was a legal way to actually check one's self into a clinic and waive your right to check out, that could actually be helpful. Hell, it could be helpful for a lot of addictions.

But as far as I know, people who voluntarily commit themselves to asylums can leave whenever they want.

Well, there are probably braces, surgery or good ol' fashion bone breaking they could use on her, but those are pretty much all going to weaken her skeleton more than it already is. I'm sure they're greatest concern right now is getting her weight managed before they attempt to fix that.

What I said earlier still stands, though. Hopefully they'll keep her under medical watch for a long time. Her heart, kidneys and all that are screwed up from being that overweight for that long. She's going to need some serious medical attention. Frankly, I hope that advances are made in growing human tissues like heart and liver tissues. That'd be a huge help in keeping her alive.

At the very least, it's a comfort to know that she is at a weight that is significantly closer to what a kid her age should be. Don't get me wrong, she is still overweight, but her risk of something like a heart attack have probably dropped significantly.

Indeed, its good to see that she is getting her life around but It liiks like she might end up having to deal with the problems of her damaged skeleton for the rest of her life. She might also have to worry about an early puberty as well, but that would only be a minor issue.

I say best of luck for her and for Simmons getting her mother to grow a brain so she will eat right from now on.

I'm no doctor, but I'm pretty certain the short answer in this case being no.

The problem with children is that they are continually growing, and putting that much weight on their bones can cause them to grow in a warped pattern, once that happens, the only way to straighten them would be through artificial intervention, which means breaking the bone and resetting it properly. And of course hoping you can line everything up just right. Making a straight column out of a warped rod is difficult enough in its own right.

This is to say nothing of damage that would have been done to her joints from having to support so much weight. I can't imagine that is good for things like knee cartlige.

I've never honestly been much a fan of Richard Simmons, but I give him major cool points for what he's done here.

Pardon the thread necromancy, but I've gotta wonder. Does this fat kid go to school? Man, the teasing has got to be horrible. And how does she move in school? I mean, prior to her diet and deflation.

Is she home schooled?

I don't think she could make out of the frontdoor let alone go to school and I doubt a Prada-Willi sufferer can be educated, sadly, due to their severe learning difficulties.
