Batteries are expensive. Might it be cheaper to just get a 15 year old diesel guzzler and discard the current car?

I am currently between jobs. Most cars right now are $6000 for a "15year old gas guzzler", and 10K for GOOD Used car.
Even when I was still working at the library, I did not have enough money for a $300-400/month car payment.

I see. Lots of affection value as well. Yeah, cars are expensive. I was lucky to get mine for $3000, but I've spent more on repairs afterwards. It also depends on quality, and I can't afford a car that's 'cheap', but breaks down if you drive it over 50miles an hour.
Yes, I'm exaggerating, but if you see a car sitting in a yard or in a store's parking lot with a "For Sale Cheap" sign on it, I'm gonna wonder wtf is wrong that they're selling it, and if it's too expensive for THEM to fix, I know it's too much for me.
Going to a dealership would get a car you know has been inspected and fixed to run, but you'll be paying at least $300/month for it.
And right now, I have no idea how good/bad my credit is.
