In my neck of the woods, if you order any kind of kebab you count yourself lucky if it doesn't contain cat. Well, unless you're too shitfaced to care, which is the traditional state of being in which to order kebabs.
Or course. And the white sauce in most™ Kebabs contains at least 7 different traces of sperm and when a Turk orders a Kebab he will get the sauce from a different canister.

By the way a friend of a friend of mine was drunk the other night and he and his buddy decided that it would be funny to drive backwards in a roundabout.

In the US shepherds pie means exclusively beef.

Even when it is goddamn dog food, it's made with "Delicious, protein-rich Beef"

You mean Americans stole a local ethnic food, but screwed it up completely to make it more palatable to Americans? I'm shocked, shocked I tell you! :P

I need to buy tyhis the next time I go to the grocery store. It hasd got to be cheaper than the one served at the Tilted Kilt.

Most sit-down restaurants that don't exclusively staff hot girls in sexually provocative outfits as their primary stock in trade are probably cheaper, too.

On-Topic: Am I the only one here who always puts mushrooms in it? That's how my Mom always made it.

I usually but do not always put mushrooms in it.

I don't have a set list of vegees I put in it, it's usually a mix of whatever is in the refrigerator. We usually have mushrooms, so they usually make an appearance in it.

I hate mushrooms with a passion, so no. I mean, if you chopped them up real fine or something, then perhaps they could fly under the radar, but otherwise they get a resounding 'nope'.

Flagg, just give it up.

One reason I bring up the difference between shepherd's pie in the UK vs. US is because so many parts of the US use beef instead of lamb. Heads up to anyone who crosses the Atlantic. Sorry if that chaps your ass, Flagg, but that's the way it is.

Mushrooms tend to polarize people. It's a love or hate thing.

Yeah, I've seen that. I can tolerate them if I don't know they're there or if I can't taste them... but then what's the point, so just leave them out :P Pizza is about the only way I can take them, and I have to just chew fast and swallow before I notice the texture.

No, just because your name is Broomstick and you are the queen of know-it-allism doesn't mean you're right. Pretty much ever. I don't give a flying fuck about how goddamned ignorant about everything Americans are, Shepherds Pie must have lamb and/ or mutton, otherwise it's not Shepherds Pie any more than "French Fries" are "Freedom Fries". Words mean things.

Flagg, shut the fuck up. You've spewed enough verbal vomit and shit over this thread and it's more than enough.

It has already been pointed out how some words mean different things in the UK and in the US and people were already discussing the ingredient differences quite rationally on the first page. Going apeshit over something like this is completely unnecessary.

Especially since if we're going into the whole "words mean things" bit, in the case of shepherd's pie, there are two things:
  1. The term refers to ingredients, which in the UK are taken to mean lamb/mutton and in the US can also be beef due to the cultural preferences
  2. The name also also contains the context of how it is made
When you also factor in that especially on this board, which has an international membership, not everyone may be familiar with the distinction between shepherd's pie and cottage pie. Prior to this thread, if someone had asked me if I liked cottage pie, I'd have had to ask them to explain to me what it was. Whereas I would have instantly recognized shepherd's pie as a particular type of dish.

And even if you wanted to be a pedant about its exact composition (which, as we learned on the first page with the recipe variants, does not in fact exist), the proper way to go about it is not "RAAAAAAARGH! HUUUUURGH! ME MIGHTY MONKEY, ME FLING SHIT AT EVERYTHING THAT MOVES! OLOLOLOLOLO-OIOOLOLOOOOO!"

You could just as well have pointed out that without mutton/lamb it is technically incorrect to call it shepherd's pie and leave it at that (which as we learned, is subject to cultural context too), but no, you just had to fucking start a goddamn flamewar over a recipe.

I see any more of this shit and you will be taking at least a one month break from the board.

Personal Anecdote: When I was a kid, I asked my Dad why it's called Shepherd's Pie instead of Cowboy's Pie if it has cows instead of sheep in it, and he told me that shepherds don't eat sheep because sheep are their friends. My Dad makes shit up a lot when he doesn't know the answer to a question.

Webster says that shepard´s pie is a meat pie. So at least one authority on english language doesn´t define it as necessarily consisting of lamb.

OED says the same thing. Just a meat pie.

Well it seems I'm mistake, I apologise for the tangent.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cottage_pie
The term cottage pie was in use by 1791,[2][6] when the potato was being introduced as an edible crop affordable for the poor (cf. "cottage" meaning a modest dwelling for rural workers).
The term "shepherd's pie" did not appear until 1877,[2] and since then it has been used synonymously with "cottage pie", regardless of whether the principal ingredient was beef or mutton.[1][4][9][7][8][10][11] More recently, some people have used the term "shepherd's pie" when the meat is lamb,[12][13] the theory being that shepherds are concerned with sheep[14] and not cattle[15][16][17] (see folk etymology).

I'd like to apologize to all involved, especially Broomstick and the mod staff. I let my ass show and backslid (that was me circa 2012 before I did a self examination of the way I acted on a general basis, and stopped using certain ableist terms and recognized that while I'm not the bad guy most of the time, I am enough, and even when I'm not, I would be such a fucking dickhead it made no real difference whether I was right or wrong) to a degree I find unacceptable, and while there are reasons, there are no excuses and if you care about why, check my latest venting thread. However, I stress and make a point that it's simply an explanation for where my head was (lodged firmly up my ass) and it in no way excuses my actions here.

You'll also see why it took this long to respond, otherwise it would have just been incomprehensible gibberish, like an ANY SARAH PALIN SPEECH EVER MADE. Yeah, that bad. Though I can see my neighbors house from here.

But to end my final post in this Flagg-Shit swamped thread, I let a pet peeve (like people who pronounce "espresso" as "expresso" or "sherbet" as "sherbert") turn into a "RAAAAR FLAGG RIGHT!!! YOU ALL WRONG!!! DISAGREE AND ME SMASH WITH STUPIDITY!!! One-Man idiot festival, all parts written and played by Derek "Flagg" Glazener.
I'd also like to thank Edi and the rest of the mod staff for (I assume, if I'm wrong please correct me via PM) taking mercy on my dumb ass once again due to my personal issues, and the message that that tolerance for my incoherently stupid, wrong, and pigheaded behavior is wearing thin has gotten through crystal clear. I'm a work in progress, but I'm fully aware that no one, from the Admins to the newest members are under any obligation to put up with it when shit takes a left turn and I go off the rails on a hissy fit about a fucking casserole or anything else.

Ok I lied, one more thing: I'd appreciate it if my bullshit and it's resulting destruction derby (that being people correcting my dumbassery) were HoSed with an appropriately insulting title directed at me so the good people can discuss the actual topic, not put up with my shit headed-ness.

EDIT FOR CLARIFICATION: I'm specifically talking about the post I made on the 10th (PDT) personally attacking Broomstick, I still hold by what I said previously to a degree, but there was no excuse for how I said what I said (though I shouldn't have been so hard on the Midwest, they can't help it  any more than us coastal snobs and our superior illegal drugs and tendency to think we're better than the people who grow our food  ), but I treated something that is often very subjective (food recipes) as something completely objective, which it's clearly not.

In Flagg's defense, a girl laughed so hard that she cried when I told her I wanted to show her a discussion of shepherd's pie recipes and then displayed this thread to her. "But... But the stakes are so low, and this guy just went totally, totally apeshit! This is what you do in your spare time!?" "Well, not exactly this..."
