Well I was thinking just check Dennis's phone records. Surely he got a call from them or he called them. then the polite-talk can begin. I'm totally okay with not going beyond there until there's probable cause to do so. but even if there's nothing sinister going on - if these guys were the last ones to see him, they can at least point the police in the right direction.

Also - a face-to-face meeting just give the police the probable cause they need to start the "kicking in doors" phase. Just saying - figuring out who they are might be a catalyst to bigger and better things.

Just a thought...

If his computer and hard disk are at hand, wouldn't it be helpful to maybe ask one of our local SDN computer experts at or near NYC to examine the thing really thoroughly, the way only they can? In the hopes they might find something everybody else might have overlooked, such as encrypted or steganographied IM logs, saved emails, etc.?

Here's hoping for the best...

I am pretty sure FBI computer forensics is more than up to the task. If they find something suspicious about the people GR was corresponding with via the web I am sure they can and will track them down.
I have to tell you something everything I wrote above is a lie.

I'm pretty sure the FBI is not involved. In any case I don't think GR's the type of nutjob that's going to go and make multiple encrypted emails and hide them in the darkest corners of his hdd.

All the extraneous crap cleaned out of the GR disappearance announcement. You are to use this thread for discussion and trivialities in the future unless you have actual useful information.

Next asshat who posts inane shit in the announcement thread is going to take an enforced one week vacation from the board without any further warning.

Thanks for keeping an extra thread around Edi, I just found out about this today and I would have hated not being able to pass on my well-wishes for GR.

I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere, but have the authorities or anyone involved spoken with his co-workers?

With the scenario as described, the two likely outcomes are a) something terrible happened or b) he doesn't want to be found. Usually it's b) and there's some kind of romance involved. If it was an abduction, he wouldn't likely have left the phone behind. That would be the kind of thing you'd think would be taken from him and disposed of elsewhere. Left behind intentionally? But why do the whole disappearing act? Here's hoping it's some huge, stupid misunderstanding.

If you read the main thread you would have saw Nomad's post where he states that GR doesn't like to carry his phone with him.
I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who constantly says: "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action"; who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by a mythical concept of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait for a "more convenient season."

I have removed your post from the "Missing" thread to the "Commentary" thread. I shouldn't have had to do that, as Edi explicitly stated in the announcement not to post there if you can't help, but I guess some people just don't pay attention.

No, fuck you. He wishes someone well, you have no right to tell him he's wrong to do that. This isn't a fucking fanfic that's late in updating or something. If he posted in the wrong thread, who cares? The mods already dealt with it.

How long do successful missing-person searches usually take, on average? Ghost Rider has been missing over a month now, with no news. Do they have any leads?

Quite honestly, he either isn't going to be found alive, or never found at all. It breaks my heart, but that is just the way it is.

I'm still holding out hope that he just said fuck it and decided to start a new life.

I can't find any statistics on the average duration of "missingness". However, it may be comforting to hear that only a tiny fraction of missing person cases are related to abductions.

The scary thing is that in 2001 alone there were about 900.000 missing person cases (2300 daily!). Out of which 100.000 were classified as endangered (meaning the missing person may be in some kind of danger, not necessarily resulting from the fact that they were kidnapped). Only about 30.000 cases (too much if you ask me) are deemed as related to abductions. Most of these cases are related to children under the age of 17.

There is a bitter part to the statistics. Most disappearances in the age group of below 21 is not classified in the "involuntary category". According to 2007 FBI data, out of 675,000 child abductions only about 10,000 are involuntary. In the age group above out of 139,000 cases about 11,000 are involuntary. So the chance of a missing person being involuntary is much higher. (source: http://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/ncic/n ... s-for-2007)

The comfort here is that there is a small chance that GR was abducted or is in danger. It is entirely possible that his disappearance was intentional and he just wanted to get off the grid. Which I sincerely hope is the case, because it would mean he is more or less ok and more or less in control of the situation.

Im not sure if Im reading the statistics right, but according to FBI only about 1/3 of the missing person cases are resolved.

I had a "friend" do something like that. I stopped hearing from him, no answer on his phone or from email. Nobody knew what happened with him. I even checked the obits. Turns out he was just feeling depressed. He'd gotten every message, including the ones asking only if he was ok and just didn't feel like responding. Last I heard he'd given up on his polysci masters and moved out to hollywood to take up acting. WTF? The last friend before that who went silent had OD'd. Thought he wad sockeye and knew what he was doing.

You do read about cases where someone wants to disappear and they manage to stay hidden for years. I can only imagine how friends and family would feel, happy to know he's alive and unable to understand why he would do something like that to them. And you get a ton of cases where women go missing and it looks like an abduction or murder to blame on the hubby or boyfriend and you then find out she's shacked up with a secret lover.

Well, we can rule out kidnapping for ransom, since they would have probably said something by now.

Also, I would just like to point out something that everyone is probably thinking: The names Ron and John are probably about as real as Buddy and Pal. I mean, seriously, common, one-syllable names that even rhyme.
