In what order should the movies be seen?

Post by Jim Raynor »

After the prequel trilogy is completed, in what order should the entire SW saga be seen by future viewers? Does Lucas intend for the story to be seen from Episode 1 to Episode 6, or for the prequels to be seen after the OT?

I think that first-time viewers of the Saga should see them in the order they were released (IV-VI, then I-III), but that repeat viewers should watch them in sequential order. That way, the shock value of Yoda being Yoda, and Vader being Luke's father, is preserved, but the depth of the story is allowed to emerge in repeat viewings. Of course, my opinion on this matter could change with regards to Episode III, but I am confident, now, that that is what I would recommend to anyone seeing the movies for the very first time.

I think the cutural affusion of SW makes any real shock value impossible anymore. Even people who have never seen it know who Yoda is, and that Vader is Luke's father. Might as well just watch them in sequential order then.

I agree with Ossus. First time viewers should view them in the order Lucas created them, while us warsies should watch them from beginning to end. I still wish we could have a 7, 8, and 9, especially without trampling on the expanded universe. In my opinion George Lucas should take over with Episodes 7, 8 and 9 directly after the YV crisis. If you think about it, the series will be completed about the same time that Episode III is completed :P

Lucas has, sadly, stated he won't do any more films in Star Wars(Maxim Magazine interview).

He's also pointed out that he wouldn't do 7, 8, or 9 anyways: They were never truly scripted out after the changes made for Episode 6.

Well I think that if GL were to do 7,8,9, he should do them about none other than the Thrawn Trilogy (after all I am all for The Chiss Conquest, but thsi is good too)!

But if he were to d it in sequencial order after the original trilogy he would havta do Truce at Bakura (*screams*), then the X-Wing novels with Isard and Zsinj, then he could do Thrawn, which would simply not fit into one movie.

Please Lord no.... I couldnt take any kind of movie with any refernces to Bakura in it. It would be neat however to see the Thrawn trilogy in motion picture. Remember that Shadows of the Empire was between ESB and ROTJ, no reason they couldn't do that with 7, 8, and 9. Of course Lucas would never "lower" himself to make a Star Wars movie on someone elses creation :D

Thats an intersting proposition Karrde, making the 7,8,9 between the series. Maybe 7 would be between EpIII and ANH, 8 would be between ANH and TESB, and 9 would be SOTE.

I have an ongoing idea for a set of stories playing out parallel to the original trilogy. Would be cool to see For Honor And Empire as movies, but.

Making SOTE episode 9 doesn't sound right, but it sounds better than "Episode 5 1/2".

Doing movies 7, 8, and 9 would be a big mistake IMO, no matter where in the time line they were inserted. The galaxy has been saved post-ROTJ and the Force rebalanced, you can't have a better ending to an epic than that. As for inserting movies 7, 8, and 9 into the existing timeline, that would be even worse, none of the EU stories are even close to being grand enough to merit a film rendering.

A lot of people forget that Star Wars is the story of one family, and how it affects the Galaxy at large over time. In the prequel trilogy, the main character is Anakin Solo, who is also very important in the ANH trilogy, but in ANH Luke becomes the main character. Star Wars is essentially a modernized Le Morte D'Arthur, and adding another three films to it now would be a mistake. Once you have the story written the way you want it, it is almost always a mistake to add something that was not originally part of the story, as you will stumble in your attempts to fit in the new plot elements with the old ones.

While I think it would be great if there were more SW movies planned, I also think that the saga is great as it is, and I do not think that anything more needs to be done with it after Episode III is over.

I agree. It would be great fun, but I also don't think it would add much to the saga. It would add length without depth. Also, it just might not feel like SW, although a good filmmaker could change that.

Again your right, I'm glad GL has decided not to add any more, the whole saga ends on a note that shouldn't be changed. The Emperor dies, the Empire falls apart, the DS dies, everything comes together and ties up the loose ends. Another series would, of course, ruin that perfect ending.

But if new SW movies were being created I'd still go see em, and love em. And then maybe a decade later I'd be pissed about them, and tell myself that I did not like those movies.
