The leader of al Qaeda in Iraq has offered a reward for the murder of a Swedish cartoonist who recently produced images deemed insulting to Islam and promised a new offensive in Iraq during Ramadan.

In a half-hour audio file entitled "They plotted yet God too was plotting," played on Islamist websites yesterday, Abu Omar al Baghdadi also named the other insurgent groups in Iraq al Qaeda was fighting and promised new attacks.

"We are calling for the assassination of cartoonist Lars Vilks who dared insult our Prophet, peace be upon him, and we announce a reward... of US$100,000 ($142,000) for the one who kills this criminal," the transcript on the website said.

Didn't that go out of vogue like last year? Those darned Mohammedans can never keep up with the fast pace of the modern world *sigh*. I bet that somewhere, a Mohammedan is desperately looking for a Soviet embassy to blow up as we speak.

Can we just get every single newspaper in the US to have an illustration of some normal looking arab dude circa the 7th century CE in a dignified pose with a caption that says "Mohammed" on their front page every day during the month of Ramadan? Just to tell these fucker we aren't afraid of them?

Please? Maybe a stamp?

No you can't, and there are two reasons, first it would be insensitive, second you are afraid of them.

P.S Vilks is probably going to get killed. Unlike the crisis in Denmark no one is apologising, there's just one guy to whack, AND he's not going into hiding.

Im split on the issue. One the one hand insulting the fundies is a good thing, on the other shooting Vilks is an old fantasy come true.

I think more people should be willing to stand against the sort of backwards mindedness Islamic radicals represent. My support (for this at least) goes out to Vilks.

That being said, here's a friendly prophet:

While Durandal has unfortunately beaten me out to the crack about the religion of peace, this time the real winner is Abu Omar al Baghdadi who has now best summed up Islam's take on peace ever, apparently with no sense of irony whatsoever.

"We are calling for the assassination of cartoonist Lars Vilks who dared insult our Prophet, peace be upon him."

"...assassination...peace be upon him..."

They're like neocons or the very religious. You just can't parody them any better than they parody themselves.

I don't want to nitpick, but they ARE the very religious. :)

And pbuh is something Muslims are supposed to say when they mention the Prophet (or any other prophet). It doesn't mean that they have to take it seriously, or actually care about peace.

Oh, that was rather a deserved nitpick. What I meant was that they're like our homegrown Jesus nutcases in this respect. What I actually quote was just silly.

Clearly not. Kind of like god bless you or have a nice day. Which is probably why it turned into the greatest ironic insight into Islam I've seen in quite some time.

Ghetto edit: That should have read, "What I actually said" not, "What I actually quote."

I am clearly drinking of the fail juice tonight. I think sleep is an order before I embarrass myself further.

Well, I think it's good that Vilks isn't afraid, but I'm disappointed in our Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt whose silence on this latest development is very surprising. First he held a conference with ambassadors of various Middle Eastern nations during which said nations demanded that we should change our laws on freedom of speech and where also Reinfeldt (who is an atheist) said that "Christians and Muslims lives side by side in Sweden" (nevermind the 80-90% of the population who are either atheists or agnostics or just doesn't care one way or the other). The yielding attitude, combined with the Prime Minister saying that the threat, which also involves threats against Swedish corporations and interests, is a "matter for the police" (since when has a terrorist threat been a "matter for the police"?) is outrageous.

Those pictures are great. And if they do come round and gut you all like fish and put your heads on sticks, at least you had the moral high ground and were proven correct on your "religion of peace" snipe.

Win-win!

What else would you suggest? Invading some random Middle East country?

I'd be more impressed with that tune if you drew a picture publicized in a newspaper and muslims were offering rewards for your death.

Of course not, saying that "it's a matter for the police" is ignoring the fact that it's a political matter which our Prime Minister has been surprisingly silent on.

Turkish warriors for Islam, no less. Apparently, they're more tech-savvy than your average Arab fundie, no doubt due to the evil secular policies of Ataturk. Ironic, isn't it?
