British floods are God's judgment

Judge Godd
Floods are judgment on society, say bishops

By Jonathan Wynne-Jones, Sunday Telegraph
Last Updated: 11:50pm BST 30/06/2007

The summer floods are God's judgment on the immorality and greed of modern society, claim senior Church of England bishops.

One, the Bishop of Carlisle, even said that the introduction of pro-gay laws had provoked God to send the storms that have left thousands homeless.

The bishops argued that while those affected are innocent victims, the flooding was a result of western civilisation's decision to ignore biblical teaching. The Rt Rev Graham Dow, said that the floods were not only a result of a lack of respect for the planet, but also a judgment for decadence.

"This is a strong and definite judgment because the world has been arrogant in going its own way," he said. "We are reaping the consequences of our moral degradation, as well as the environmental damage that we have caused."

The Bishop of Liverpool, the Rt Rev James Jones, previously seen as a future Archbishop of Canterbury or York, said: "People no longer see natural disasters as an act of God. However, we are now reaping what we have sown. If we live in a profligate way then there are going to be consequences." God is exposing us to the truth of what we have done."

The Bishops spoke as flood-hit communities were warned to expect up to two inches of rain - this weekend.

Dam you gay rights activists. Fundamentalist third world countries that hang gays don't have these weather related problems they live in paradise!

I hope this Bishop chooses to make this sort of statement in the middle of a group of people who have lost their homes. We'll see how his God stands up to mob violence.
He urged people to respond to the latest floods by turning away from a lifestyle of greed to instead live thinking of the consequences of their actions.
Will the Church be giving up its massive amount of wealth for the good of the people?

Just out of interest does anyone know how many churches have been damaged by the flooding?

Ahh right. So instead of God striking down the evil Gay people, he just kills a whole heap of other people and destroys their property. God should check his weather guns sniper scope...

So he punishes everyone else for letting it happen...great thing this free will is isn't it.

But yes, this Bishop(s) need to preach this to their flock...in the flood waters...

Indeed. Wasn't a gay made an Anglican bishop some time ago?

Wait, wait, wait! - didn't their God promise to never flood the world again, that it wouldn't be flood but fire the next time He got pissed?

Now I did a job. I got nothing but trouble since I did it, not to mention more than a few unkind words as regard to my character so let me make this abundantly clear. I do the job. The key, of course, being "the world" as in the entire world, global flood style. He's just not up for mass worldwide genocide until the end. It's down to a few dozen to a few thousand a disaster these days. What a nice guy.

This kind of thing always strikes me as to how little we've changed since the days of Thor, Zeus, and the like. We went from a pantheon of gods to just one god. The things god controls are the same as the things the old pagan gods controlled. So I say it is really Tlaloc that is pissed off. Britian hasn't been sacrificing enough children lately.

This would make sense if the main centres of open homosexuality and other things people with sticks up their asses tend to dissaprove approve of are areas that, as I understand it, haven't been remotely effected by the rain.

It's not like they're hard targets either. London sits it's pretty, gay pride ass on a river and Brighton, the "gay capital" of Britain is right next to the FUCKING SEA!

But instead he seems to hit the Midlands? Yeah... good one.

Yes, and it split the church in two. Also, the Anglican Communion- which exists outside the UK- is largely independent of the Church of England.

Why don't people speak out against this foolishness and call these church leaders idiots in the press?

How anyone could believe God would be cruel enough to send a message against OTHER sinners by punishing innocent people in a roundabout way is just unbelievable idiocy. Fuck these people piss me off! It's just shameless whore-mongering. Using a natural disaster to claim God's wrath so they can spew out moral judgments. My fuck, isn't this world ever going to grow up?

My thoughts exactly. Oh, and as Broomstick pointed out, I'm surprised that they don't know the fairy tales they're preaching better (i.e. no more floods).

Why is this Bishop so sure the floods were punishment for not persecuting homosexuals enough?

I live in Sheffield and I saw a guy buying some prawns in the supermarket just last week, maybe God flooded us to punish him for that.

Funny, we're getting flooded right now in the middle of Fundiestan. I was up all night stacking paving stones, cinder blocks and shoveling mud into a pile to keep the flood out of my house. You just know that whenever some bad shit happens anywhere, some idiot will come out of the woodwork and make his personal religion look ass-retarded by sprouting bullshit about how the latest disaster is the 'will of god' or something. And somehow god keeps missing all the bad people with his Righteous Smiting™, because the next year there's another flood or fire or terror attack or meteor strike or freak alien invasion somewhere, and another dolt will be right there to take the soap box stand ready to make himself into the daily clown for the Cause.

After ten of these proclamations you'd think they'd get the point. But nooo, it's gawd punishing us mortals. Again! Well either he's gone rusty after all these years or he's just a big old softy now, 'cause way back in the day the dude sure as hell was better at trashing entire peoples and raining fire from the skies.

Argh.
Sort of makes you wonder if these people would actually like some other cataclysmic Sodom and Gomorra-like event. I bet they'd be jacking all over it if some big ol' spacerocks fell on Amsterdam tomorrow.

Damned if these intolerant assholes don't get under my skin every single time with their parasitical leeching on other people's miseries. They could be spending their precious time organizing charities or donating to the Red Cross but no, gay people need condemning! Don't mind those drowning miserable people, what other people do in the privacy of their bedrooms is far more important to almighty gawd!

Ever read the Old Testament?

Okay, so God's willing to smite people for not hating teh gayz enough but won't lift a finger to help starving refugees? He won't stop warlords? Gay is higher on the "DO NOT DO THIS!!!" ;ist than genocide? What the fuck?

What I really want to know is, if God is punishing Great Britain, New Orleans, etc. for their sins, why is Amsterdam still standing? Or or those willey Dutch too smart for the Almighty?

I found this oddly amusing for some reason. It's more flooding, but it's so off target for God. He's having a bad week hitting the bullseye.
Floods Force Evacuations in Kansas
AP

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (July 1) - Flooding worsened Sunday across parts of Kansas and Missouri, forcing more people from their homes, and meteorologists said it could be days before rivers return to normal following days of drenching rainfall on the Plains.

The Kansas National Guard was sent to help with a mandatory evacuation of Osawatomie, a town of 4,600, as the overflowing Pottawatomie Creek inundated neighborhoods and workers struggled to reinforce a levee on the Marais des Cygnes.

Mayor Philip Dudley said 40 percent of the town was under the evacuation order.

"They came and told us to leave at 6:30 this morning," said Shanda Dehay, 17. "We weren't able to get anything out. These clothes I'm wearing are my aunt's."

Despite the order, many residents waded through the water or paddled in rowboats for their belongings and to survey the damage, which included homes that were half underwater and nearly submerged vehicles.

Construction worker Joe Clark, 54, and his brother helped people retrieve items from their homes with their canoe. Clark couldn't get into his own home because the water had already risen to within a few feet of the eaves.

"Might as well help people get out what they can," Clark said. "I can't get to anything of mine."

Dudley corrected earlier reports that a levee had failed along the Pottawatomie Creek, saying storm waters had overwhelmed pumping stations along the creek but that levees and dikes are still holding.

Storms across the southern Plains have claimed 11 lives in Texas since more than a week ago, and two Texans were missing. That state has gotten some of the worst of the lingering storm system, with the weather service measurng in north Texas, and passengers were bussed instead, said Terry Angier, a spokeswoman for the Oklahoma Department of Transportation.

In north Texas, hundreds of residents near the overflowing Wichita and Brazos rivers remained evacuated from their homes Sunday, uncertain of when they could return.

Some residents had been allowed to return Saturday, but hours later authorities encouraged them to seek higher ground as water released from flood gates on upstream dams moved downstream, said Shawn Scott, Parker County emergency management coordinator.

The Brazos River was expected to crest early Monday before falling below flood stage during the day, Parker County spokesman Joel Kertok said.

Wichita Falls officials had urged residents of low-lying areas to leave Friday and weren't sure when they could return because of concerns about contaminants in the water, city spokesman Barry Levy said.

If God's out there, it just doesn't seem to me like he's siding with Kansas, a bastion of Godliness. On another note, we could kind of use that rain down here, just not in hurricane form.
