Grants Aim To Crack Down On Street Racing
Announcement Made In Folsom Near Scene Of Fatal Wreck
FOLSOM, Calif. -- The state announced $4.4 million in grants on Friday aimed at cracking down on illegal street racing.
California Office of Traffic Safety officials said the money is intended to pay for enforcement mobilizations and set up training programs for police statewide to detect and cite illegal vehicle modifications.
Authorities made the announcement at a news conference just off Iron Point Road, near the scene of a fatal wreck blamed on street racing. Police said the incident killed second-grade teacher Susan McNew, a bystander who was not involved in the race. Officials estimated nearly 100 people die in California each year because of street racing.
"Unfortunately, we don't catch many people in the act," said Elk Grove Police Chief Robert Simmons, who attended the news conference. "These things are very opportunistic. They happen very quickly and they're over very quickly."
Police officials on hand welcomed the grant money.
"The money's going to training, to education and to enforcement overtime," said Sam Spiegel, Folsom's police chief.

It's about damn time. I heard them say on a radio broadcast that modified exhaust systems will be sufficient cause for cops to pull them over and inspect the cars. Odd how they're suddenly being targeted... they should have been after the first one of these shitheads killed someone.
I know it's not much of a secret that I harbor little sympathy for the hyperconsumerist urban/gangsta culture that spoiled white kids adopt to accomodate their dickwagging pursuits, but even so, I'm glad to hear that street racing crackdowns are not isolated. If you want to slavishly pursue a lifestyle portrayed in film, pick something more along the lines of a venerated historical figure than some 'roid raging rapper.

I'd like to think it's not an iron-clad "constant", and that without cultural reinforcement like pretty much all of music television or movies starring rappers, it'd be heavily undermined, but I am a dreamer at the best of times.

While biology is a factor, culture supports these things (amusingly, so do parents). I can only imagine how a parent who has spent thousands of dollars tricking out their son's shitbox 90s hatch can let them keep it after they get busted. You've just got to realise that for a slice of society, breaking the law and risking your life just isn't a bad thing, and if the cops come round to tell tales on your son that's a good enough reason to let him keep his retarded car.
And plus, it gives me the awesome entertainment of spotting them on the highway and giggling at how few even have girlfriends. Let's go for a drive with our totally straight friend in his big car! RAR!

Stark, I agree with you as well. I wasn't discounting environmental or psychodynamic processes, I just meant that I believe that the evidence is pretty telling as far as male humans and aggression go.
As far as culture goes, while it may not do much to curb the innate tendency to aggression, it could at least direct it towards sanctioned forms that do not involve vehicles of mass destruction in public areas.
