God, they manage to oppose a free market exactly when it would be most beneficial. I could imagine them meeting in some underground secret bunker somewhere plotting exactly how they will next fuck over the average American.
What really pisses me off, though, is that a week later Bush'll be standing on a podium in some hick town offering glowing praise to the glorious institution of capitalism. Motherfuckers.
"If one needed proof that a guitar was more than wood and string, that a song was more than notes and words, and that a man could be more than a name and a few faded pictures, then Robert Johnson’s recordings were all one could ask for."
Even Papa Smurf... pardon, Papa Marx wrote about fight between small/medium business and the corporations, where the latter fuck over the former due to sheer capital concentration.
Seriously, I'm kind of wondering why America does not have a strong Dem-Soc/Soc-Dem party. It's very clear that smaller businesses are being fucked over by the corporations. They must be a great potent force for change... or are they? I mean, social democratic parties have expressed the interest of smaller enterprises and their workers since long, and how is that so America lacks any of it 15 past the fall of the USSR? Surely they must realize who supports their interests and who does not?

Well, we only have to put up with Gerogie the moron for ~1.5 years.

During periods of our history, we have had such movements arise, but they were co-opted into the two existing parties. Examples of such would be the 'progressives' of the late 19th/early 20th centuries seeing a lot of their domestic policies co-opted by Teddy Roosevelt's 'Bull Moose' Republicans and FDR's 'New Deal', which gave the initial start to what social safety net we do have.
As to why the New Deal didn't continue after the war?
I'd say it was due to many factors, including the individualistic streak that still runs through American society, the shame that used to be associated with 'welfare', and more concrete at the time, the discovery of all those Soviet spies that seemed to infest the New Deal agencies like cockroaches.
In other words, it's your fault.
"You say that it is your custom to burn widows. Very well. We also have a custom: when men burn a woman alive, we tie a rope around their necks and we hang them. Build your funeral pyre; beside it, my carpenters will build a gallows. You may follow your custom. And then we will follow ours."- General Sir Charles Napier

Ah, I see. Wonders of a two-party system I guess. Only two strong players where they incorporate the ideas of any lesser factions.

And our quite thorough Reaganization at the hands of the media. We've been indoctrinated into thinking the Invisible Hand of the Free Market is all-powerful and will foment a Trickle Down that makes a Rising Tide that will Lift All Boats. All the while Big Business has it handcuffed eight trillion ways to Sunday and back, so this free market doesn't even exist!
Conversely, anything that involves the government actually DOING ITS JOB of helping the Common Citizen in any way is strongly decried as Stalinist Communism of only the worst most genocidal sort.
Then when people wise up, the Media goes into overdrive with the 'Boo, War! Boo, Islamists! Boo, Queers! Boo, Fundies! Boo, Darkies! Boo, Crackers!' divide-and-conquer fucktardery to get our little subgroups nice and Balkanized instead of united against the real enemy of the Big Corporations. It doesn't help that our education systems have been deliberately sabotaged to make people more conducive to these kinds of rank manipulation.
So is the corporate mindset here that as long as they don't thoroughly test their meat, they have plausible deniability when a strain of something pops up in their product?
"A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky, dangerous animals and you know it. Fifteen hundred years ago everybody knew the Earth was the center of the universe. Five hundred years ago, everybody knew the Earth was flat, and fifteen minutes ago, you knew that humans were alone on this planet. Imagine what you'll know...tomorrow."

That logic about big corporations fucking over small ones by sheer mass of capital? It works exactly the same way with political parties. So while there are a ton of tiny parties that nobody's heard of, only the two major parties remain players in the political arena.
A Government founded upon justice, and recognizing the equal rights of all men; claiming higher authority for existence, or sanction for its laws, that nature, reason, and the regularly ascertained will of the people; steadily refusing to put its sword and purse in the service of any religious creed or family is a standing offense to most of the Governments of the world, and to some narrow and bigoted people among ourselves.
Here's a thought I've had ever since I learned what prion diseases were, and how they are spread; how can we know that prion disease doesn't affect pork and poultry, as well? Especially considering what they're fed?
Chickens and pigs are, at least to my limited understanding, slaughtered before any symptoms would make themselves known.
