Goddamn prison riots.

Post by weemadando »

Tasmania has had another prison riot over the weekend. In this one, though no guards were taken hostage, a female guard was beaten and her keys stolen from her.

The prisoners then holed themselves up inside and trashed the place for 20 hours before a chemical agent was used to end the siege.

Problem 1:
The rest of the prisoners are whining about being locked down for the period of the riot and not being able to shower for two days... Well shit, don't complain to the fucking guards or the media, complain to the fucking prisoners who started the riot.

Problem 2:
No hostages... Seriously, these are PRISONERS in a max sec gaol who have assaulted a guard to make good their plans for the riot. Walk in an armed fucking team and shoot anyone who doesn't fucking comply with the demands to get on the fucking ground. How hard is it to comprehend the fact that these people are already in gaol for commiting serious crimes and are obviously incorrigible?

Problem 3:
The riot was over food. Like the previous riot. Apparently prison food is terrible. Wow. Here's a handy fucking hint - if you don't like prison food, don't fucking commit crimes. And if you are in prison and don't like prison food, write a fucking letter to the paper, don't trash the fucking prison and then bitch and fucking whine to the media when you have tear gas used to break up your little rampage.

Problem 4:
Politicians getting up in arms over "nothing being done about this". Things were done about this. After the last fucking riot and hostage situation there was a series of reforms made to the prison food etc. Obviously this wasn't fucking good enough. And when I see a douchebag like Bob Cheek or Greg Barns talking about how hard the prisoners have it, all I want to say is: "THEY ARE FUCKING CRIMINALS. BEING HELD IN A MAXIMUM SECURITY GAOL. FUCK THEM."

You spell jail funny.

Prisoners will find an excuse to riot no matter what, and, like as not, if you use extreme means to put it down, you'll just encourage them to be more violent in their next attempt.

Fine, then just beat the fucking shit out of them. This is the second riot in less than a year over FOOD. Not being beaten, or having the legal system revoked or anything like that, but over food.

Jesus Christ. Next thing you know they'll be whining that their cable TV doesn't allow Pay-Per Views and their fucking Internet speed isn't fast enough.

That does solve the rioting problem though and lowers the prison population.

I have an idea.

1) have cheap food. Fuck the prisoners. You may have rights, but having the right to eat nice food isn't one of them. Hospital food is pretty poor, and if law abiding citizens can't get government funded decent food, I don't see why criminals should get it any better since they are supposed to be punished (among other things).

2) cut down on luxuries like television and internet.

3) spend more money on security. We can start with the money we will save from not giving them fucking luxuries.

4) if there is a further riot, subdue with extreme prejudice.

I like Shroomie's idea. The only problem is with disappointing lack of Sovietness at the moment.

Maybe we could outsource our prison industry to Nauru. Think about it: we can employ the Nauruvians as our prison guards, thus boosting their economy by about a gazillion percent. and we will no longer have to put up with our prisoners, so it'll be a win-win situation.

OR we could just put our prisoners on Nauru and give all the Nauruvians housing in Tasmania. Then we can sit back and see how long it takes them to build boats and try to get into Australia.

The Nauruvians that is, not the prisoners.

No, have the prisoners try that. Then we'll have the navy intercept their boats and sink them 'accidentally' saying that they were 'illegal immigrant who had such shockingly unsafe boats'. Then produce a few sailors who 'valiantly tried to save the boat people at the risk of their own lives, but, alas, to no avail.......'

Guards should carry guns and have authorization to use lethal force. I don't see how a female guard can protect herself against inmates otherwise. Guards should always walk in pairs at least.

They should take lessons from Sheriff Joe Arpaio.

[... Equally impressive are the Sheriff's get tough policies. Arpaio doesn't believe in coddling criminals, frequently saying that jails should not be country clubs. He banned smoking, coffee, pornographic magazines, movies and unrestricted television in all jails. He has the cheapest meals in the country too. The average inmate meal costs under 20 cents...]

Yeah, but in my scenario, it's the Nauruvians who are stuck in Tasmania...

I believe there have been claims of abuse under this system, though. However, the concept is quite sound IMO, and with proper supervision of guards and good enforcement of penalties, this could be a very good system.

Prison guards almost never carry lethal weapons when they're among the prisoners because of the possibility of the prisoners capturing such weaponry.
"You say that it is your custom to burn widows. Very well. We also have a custom: when men burn a woman alive, we tie a rope around their necks and we hang them. Build your funeral pyre; beside it, my carpenters will build a gallows. You may follow your custom. And then we will follow ours."- General Sir Charles Napier

Someone speaks sense in this thread at last.

Fun fact: police have to be disarmed and patted down along with all other visitors when they enter Port Philip Prison (). For their own safety the prison gets locked down. And most inmates won't go after a screw because it's just not worth it. Arming them with lethal weaponry is also redundant when there are Special Operations Groups on call.

Really you're in more danger from the fucking inmates than you are from the screws, because most screws leave you alone. Really these guys don't do fuck all but sit on their arse all day so it's easy to get along with them. But like all things it's only a few who ruin it for the rest. This talk about cutting luxuries hurts all the prisoners, even if the majority of them behave themselves 99% of the time. It really takes just one psychopath who doesn't give a shit about anyone else to ruin it for everyone else.
