Hockey Season has started

No, not the silly guys in the NHL, I mean pick-up hockey for the guys and gals (hockey's not just a guy sport ya know) at the local rinks. Yes, it's finally cold and there's now ice on the outdoor rinks which means the 2004-05 Etobicoke rinks series is officially underway.

In the season opener, it was me, my sister, & my BF vs. two big guys, one wearing a Leafs jersey and the other in a Blackhawks jacket in a game of light contact shinny. This was a fast paced high scoring game with many end to end rushes, and defence was almost non-existent. The play of the game came at the expense of me & my BF...after losing control of the puck on a rough patch of ice, he had the puck knocked between his legs by the Blackhawks guy who then stick handled around my sister and banked the puck off my skate and into the goal.

This led to the great rumble after my sister uttered a filthy word, and we proceeded to drop our gloves and have a playfight/wresting match in the middle of the rink. By our estimates, this would've resulted in at least 30 penalty minutes as we all got fighting majors, and there were a couple instigators & roughing penalties in there as well for good measure. The action slowed down for a bit as we started playing the trap, but after I stole the puck off the Blackhawks guy and scored on a sweet breakaway the game went wide open again. Final score? We're not sure actually, but it was well into the double digits for both teams.

So yeah, hockey rules, especially when you're playing it!

I do play a bit of hockey, not especially fast or strong or talented, but I get by. I scored a goal two nights ago against Warren Woods Tower. It was a two on one, I had the puck breaking the zone, their guy back had Nate covered, and the goalie was square to me, but I knew he had a leaky five-hole so I just threw it out there and it squeezed between the pads and trickled into the net.

Pretty cool stuff.

I don't play hockey. Not too strong, not much sense of balance, hard to find that much ice in Georgia. But there is that lovely thing called hockey pep band...

Am I the only person who plays in a hockey pep band here or has even heard of them outside of comments made by me?

No, it's when I take one of these and spear you in the guts with it. Of course, that'll get me a 5 minute major for butt-ending and a possible game misconduct.

Anyways, we played again this morning except it was just 3 of us so we spent some time passing the puck around and practicing 2 on 1 scoring plays. I also figured out how to do the "nice move!" sequence that was pictured in Darth Garden Gnome's sig a while back, but I can't do it nearly as fast. And now my back hurts and my wrists are in serious pain.
