Improvised Meals

Post by Robert Treder »

I'm sure we've all made our fair share of meals that weren't quite kosher according to Ms. Crocker. In fact, we've had threads proving as much in the past. Tonight I was on a roll:

I'm staying at my parents house while they're out of town (visiting my sister in Tucson at her new apartment). So, I've got a fridge full of leftovers to work with, and not enough initiative to make a real meal. Watch me work my magic ...
First, I took some cooked white rice out of the fridge and threw it in a frying pan along with olive oil and butter (you can never have too much oil and fat). I started that frying at full blast, and doused it with soy sauce. I then added some chunky peanut butter for flavor (the standard reaction is disgust, I know ... but give it a try: peanut butter tastes good on anything). To top it off, I added some taco meat. Fried it up nice and poured it in a bowl. Voila, a filling meal.

Now, for dessert. There's no ice cream, no cookies, and I don't feel like going out and buying anything. So, I grab a watermelon, cut it up, and add a bunch of Cool Whip. I was afraid it was gonna suck, but as it turns out, watermelon and Cool Whip are two great tastes that taste great together.
And you may ask yourself, 'Where does that highway go to?'

Fruit snacks, pretzels, microwave dinners, weight-loss "meal bars", Slim-Fast shakes, power bars... whatever lurks in the bowels of our storage room. Hell, I've eaten chocolate chips straight out of the bag for lack of any actual food.

Tonight I tried to make a italian chicken sandwich. I marinated a chicken breast in olive oil and meat tenderizer, threw it on to the George Foreman grill for about 8 minutes, toasted two pieces of Italian bread, put the chicken breast on the bread, coated it with Ragu parmesan sauce, threw a slice of lowfat mozarella on top, and put the completed sandwich in the microwave for about 40 seconds to melt the cheese. It turned out decently - I liked the taste and would make it again - but I didn't use enough cheese and spaghetti sauce for the amount of chicken I had, so the chicken kind of dominated the taste where the cheese and the spaghetti sauce should have.

BTW, the George Foreman grill is the best chicken appliance, ever. Definitely get one if you aren't a masterful chef, you can make a tasty and fairly lean piece of meat on it very easily.

Why put the sandwich in the microwave? I've found those Forman grills do a fine job of grilling sandwiches as well as meat.

Drippage? The cheese I imagine would liquify pretty quick after a few minutes on the grill and much of it would drip into the grease tray. I will try it tomorrow, though.

Usually I pull a bowl of brown rice out of the fridge, heat it up with some curry sauce, throw some beef or pork into the sauce, pour it on the rice and eat it. I can throw together a decent sub, though.

I mean put it in bread and all and grill the whole sandwich. Turns out pretty well actually.

White rice + just about anything = meal

Throw on some scraps of meat, pickled plums, fish, veggies, leftover juices from some kind of food, beans, or whatever else, and I'll call it a meal.

Speaking of Foreman grills, they're great for veggies, also. Slice squash and zucchini thin, put some olive oil on them, and put them on the grill for a few minutes. They go great with the grilled chicken, and you have a quick but respectable meal.

Fortunately I have a pretty iron constitution. Eating a whole watermelon won't cause me any problems (it hasn't in the past).

Spam straight from the can, random bits of meat thrown into an omlette, instant breakfast whatever I can find will be made into a meal should I lack time, enegry or will power. Take what I had for dinner today for example. My mom was going to make an omlette but she got sick and as such every one in my family just ended up fending for themselves dinner wise. We had some cinniamon raison bread in the fridge (good stuff. Get it. As for a brand monks=teh awsome). So I toasted up like 3 slices, poured a glass of milk and voila, I had dinner.

My standard patented meal is as follows:
You require any variety of rye, white, or whole-wheat bread (sliced, buns, or baguettes); any one or a combination of melted mozarella, cheddar, fetta, or brie cheese; a combination or single type of cold meat such as roast beef, salami, mortadella, calabasa, or ham; amd a combo or single garlic (sliced or powder), onions, or lettuce. Add the mandatory mayonaise. Pop'her in the mini-oven for 2-4 minutes, and voila, a grand Master Sandwich™ or the smaller scale Super Sandwich™.

Total preperation time: under 10 minutes
Taste Rating: Delicioso
Stomach Satisfaction: Total

Well something I like is to make a normal ham sandwich with lettuce and tomatoes and such and then also put salad dressing on it, not sure if thats particularly strange or un-kosher of whatever, just never heard of anyone else that does that, also I think it only works with this local brand of dressing that has garlic in it.
