 That's actually in the book? Great work as always, its just hard to believe its all canon now...that is quite an accomplishment, even if stuff like the Bellator was technically already in DE, if badly drawn. The Assertor though...must have taken some work to get an SSD that makes an Executor look weak canon.

There was some thought of basing the Mandator on Anon Cruiser 5. Nothing came of it in the book though.

And an SSD that makes an Executor looks weak already exists in canon. Twice. Sovereign and Eclipse :)

The docking arms, certainly.

Validusia Station dimensions? I'd say 5k meters by 8k meters, plus or minus a thousand meters.

Quite a bit bigger than that :) Maximum extents: 31km (length, away from camera) x 21km (width) x 17km (height).

Nice! Looks like the attack is mostly over though. :)

Are those Imperial-I class ISDs I see?!

Not just ImpStars - ISD-1s. Personally I'm not convinced the taller comm array is a class distinction, rather than the Devastator simply having hers extended and all other examples having them retracted.

This wouldn't be a cropped picture, would it? I'm trying to find the best way to get as much of this picture onto my desktop (1600x900). Thanks again for the great artwork.

OK, here is my question to fractal...

For those people whom have never seen your work before, what sort of feedback are you getting?
IE Upon seeing the ships for the first time, what is the consensus you here from fans?

Heh...I know about the Eclipse and Sovereign...I meant an SSD that makes an Ex look weak without needing the Superlaser. And my guess at about half DS1 size was somewhat off as far as the station goes, but hey, it was worth a shot.

Got my copy today

'interdictor' star destroyer? (sigh)

if I understand it right the Praetor / praetor II = Giel's ship?

the mandator got mentioned as 'hunchbacked' which hunchback? also mandator III?

heh looks like they tried hard to get the anon executor like vessels their own class with the executor entry.

Was anything discussed to be the Tagge and Wemis cruisers? (anon #1 and #2) ?

Also felt it was interesting how the mediator/Viscount length discrepancy was handled. Essentially saying that the namesake of a class was actually a completely different design of a substantially smaller vessel...

too bad they didn't go more into the walkers, I always liked that part of Saxton's site.

hmm well hopefully I influenced a few of the new republic designs, the battle dragons and MC90 are at least the right shape and the BAC has a matching paint scheme :-p I guess I could have mentioned that I can turn out high poly models if forced.

A specific question on how they handled your artwork, did you provide high res renders for composition or were you able to do your own background work and composition? In the case of the Wrath image it looks like the turbolasers and background were added after the fact as the salvos don't line up with the length of the ship (and honestly that is a really limiting fire angle for performing a BDZ)

The interdictor was supposed to be Immobilizer, but they sent me the wrong reference. I was only too happy to oblige, since I love the Dominator/Binder design. I do remember thinking "wow, this is a random bit of the EU to pick."

Nothing for anon1 or 2, but Giel's ship became a Praetor II.

Nebula was from the revised version, Endurance my own idea. Thank god I was able to do that and not the ... thing ... in Cracken's.

The artwork composition was all by me, except when some of my existing stuff was composited in for background (Piett and Ozzel piece, one with piece with the OT crew in the Falcon cockpit and Bellator and Procursators in the background).

The BDZ pic was initially supposed to be stern-on camera, with the main engines firing to compensate recoil. There was an editorial decision to switch it around to make the ship clearer. The turbolaser volleys were supposed to be from the center batteries only on the hidden side, as I didn't have time to rotate a few hundred turrets and do muzzle flashes for actually visible batteries, etc. I rationalize it as the fleet beginning bombardment, but turning to face some enemy force coming in from behind the camera. Meh. Still, quite liked the overall pic.

Here's another one that was in the promotional art releases for the book, but high-res and no watermark:

Image

Also, here are some final and WIP shots of the ISDI. I was asked not to do a full studio replicate, so it was just bridge and turret modifications to the ISDII model.

With the 2 Assertors in the Validusia yard and various Secutors and Allegiances any specific notes on discussion around those vessels?

Nope, didn't get any notes about the ships themselves; I really didn't have much input into the text. By the time the illustrations were done the manuscript was finished except for captions and marginalia I believe. If I did have any input I probably would've pushed for a slightly different Anaxes fleet classification, but I'm happy I got to do illustrations and name a few ships :).

Well I don't exactly get a lot of fanmail, but the reactions on TFN seem generally positive, assuming I'm not missing anything.

Jason initially wanted it to be Anon cruiser 5, I believe, but that never made it into the final book. For now, we just know Mandators are ~8km, and hunchbacked :P

I'm not qualified to answer this...but I remember the Assertor being something like 3 or more times stronger than an Executor.

The ISD-1's aftermost turret is a twin ion cannon rather than a turbolaser.

I love and appreciate your work, fractalsponge1, it definitely deserved to be canonized, congratulations. Its definitely superior to the numerous ambiguous Imperial-style ships from Dark Empire that it retconned.

I also have a few questions. Why in George Lucas's name did the Allegiance-class and Procursator-class (though I don't think it made it into TEGTW) end up with Heavy and Light Star Destroyer designations, respectively? It just seems like an unwelcome invitation to rename the other Star Destroyers, or even Star Battlecruisers and Star Dreadnoughts, with heavy, light, or possibly even medium designations, which is complete and totally unnecessary. Its like renaming something like the Gladiator-class, Victory-class, or Venator-class a Light Star Destroyer, or something like the Imperial-class, Tector-class, or Dominator-class (I so wish they would canonize the Dominator name) a Heavy Star Destroyer.

I always envisioned the Allegiance to be the only named representative of what Wookieepedia calls the Imperial-class Super Star Destroyer, the Eclipse's pair of escorts during the Battle of Pinnacle Base from Dark Empire. Something that I have come to call the Imperial-class Star Battlecruiser, since SSD is too generic of a term for a proper ship name in my opinion, and all three SSDs appear to be much larger than an ImpStar. So how can the Allegiance-class be less than 2,000 meters long?

Wookieepedia basically makes Lucas Licensing hold their hand and tell them what to do, and take everything Lucas Licensing says at face value, so if one doesn't make sure Lucas Licensing gets it right, Wookieepedia will do some wacky things.

Note: Secutor isn't bold like the rest of the ship names on the main page of the gallery on your site.

To be honest, the ISD-1 turrets look slightly smaller compared to the canonical model:-

Heavy and light are my designations, and not canon, and in any event only refer to relative scale, and are really quite common in normal naval terminology. Class names are based on specific ships, project designations, or naming themes; Star Destroyers are the type, and the class names are after the lead ship.

Procursator did make it into the book, just not in one of my images. Well, it was one of my images, but it was composited into the background of another painting.

Imperial-class refers to the re-designated Imperator class. Nothing else. Calling anything else Imperial class would imply there are multiple ships named Imperial, and there's no indication of that. Otherwise, it'd just be as odd as calling both Nimitz and Enterprise American-class air craft carriers.

Allegiance is 2.2km long, and the current thinking is that it is called a star destroyer only colloquially, since the new Anaxes chart puts 2km+ ships in the battlecruiser range.

Correct. The original turrets can't really rotate past each other.
