I love and appreciate your work, fractalsponge1, it definitely deserved to be canonized, congratulations. Its definitely superior to the numerous ambiguous Imperial-style ships from Dark Empire that it retconned.
I also have a few questions. Why in George Lucas's name did the Allegiance-class and Procursator-class (though I don't think it made it into TEGTW) end up with Heavy and Light Star Destroyer designations, respectively? It just seems like an unwelcome invitation to rename the other Star Destroyers, or even Star Battlecruisers and Star Dreadnoughts, with heavy, light, or possibly even medium designations, which is complete and totally unnecessary. Its like renaming something like the Gladiator-class, Victory-class, or Venator-class a Light Star Destroyer, or something like the Imperial-class, Tector-class, or Dominator-class (I so wish they would canonize the Dominator name) a Heavy Star Destroyer.
Heavy and light are my designations, and not canon, and in any event only refer to relative scale, and are really quite common in normal naval terminology. Class names are based on specific ships, project designations, or naming themes; Star Destroyers are the type, and the class names are after the lead ship.
Procursator did make it into the book, just not in one of my images. Well, it was one of my images, but it was composited into the background of another painting.
I always envisioned the Allegiance to be the only named representative of what Wookieepedia calls the Imperial-class Super Star Destroyer, the Eclipse's pair of escorts during the Battle of Pinnacle Base from Dark Empire. Something that I have come to call the Imperial-class Star Battlecruiser, since SSD is too generic of a term for a proper ship name in my opinion, and all three SSDs appear to be much larger than an ImpStar. So how can the Allegiance-class be less than 2,000 meters long?
Imperial-class refers to the re-designated Imperator class. Nothing else. Calling anything else Imperial class would imply there are multiple ships named Imperial, and there's no indication of that. Otherwise, it'd just be as odd as calling both Nimitz and Enterprise American-class air craft carriers.
Allegiance is 2.2km long, and the current thinking is that it is called a star destroyer only colloquially, since the new Anaxes chart puts 2km+ ships in the battlecruiser range.
To be honest, the ISD-1 turrets look slightly smaller compared to the canonical model:-http://www.theforce.net/swtc/Pix/Xbradford/ISD_Guns.jpg
Was it an issue of turning circle?
Correct. The original turrets can't really rotate past each other.
