A niece of a friend was drawing after class.
She drew a house, then some hills, then people standing on both.
Then she drew the water gradually coming up over the top of the house and the people.
Her aunt laughed, 'My generation would normally draw single storey flooding. Times are changing.'

On first glance I had to chuckle a bit at that, but then I thought about it and realised just how profoundly depressing it is. She's the first of a generation that will think it's entirely normal for the weather to try and kill you every year.
There are hardly any excesses of the most crazed psychopath that cannot easily be duplicated by a normal kindly family man who just comes in to work every day and has a job to do.

In the area where I live there are certain islands which have been swept clean of all people four or five times in recorded history. The idea of the weather trying to kill you is hardly new, unless you live in very, very sheltered areas.Zaune wrote:On first glance I had to chuckle a bit at that, but then I thought about it and realised just how profoundly depressing it is. Yeah, I live in south east Australia. It's either bushfire season or flooding season. And wherever I travel around the world, I just replace one or both of those with cyclone/sandstorm/tornado or whatever other potential disaster is appropriate. In the area where I live there are certain islands which have been swept clean of all people four or five times in recorded history.
