They still looked kinda flat to me. Better than they did, but they didn't "pop" the way some of the other effects did.

I'm curious to see this, but after the massive headache I got from watching Green Lantern in 3D I don't know if I can do it.

I saw TPM 3D over the weekend. I didn't see Green Lantern in 3D, and I don't know how you react to 3D in general, but I didn't think that the 3D effects were that obtrusive in TPM. Lucas was right when he said he wasn't trying to throw things in people's faces. Things had a more organic feel than what I've seen in some other 3D movies, and it was more about portraying the scenery in depth. I basically agree with Darth Tedious's assessment of things. It subtly enhanced the movie without going for blatant gimmick shots.

Well part of that is that it wasn't made with 3D in mind at all. There were certainly scenes that could have done with a little more in your face action IMO. Ship flyovers and the like. The couple times when the Sith Probe Droids flew by were cool.

I watched it last night and was pleasantly surprised. The 3D shots of the star fields and spaceships looked awesome, though the interior scenes didn't look very good. The pod race seemed more entertaining (though I still can't stand the announcer) even though it was lengthened and I thought it was the weakest part of the movie when I first saw it.

Yeah, the star fields really look far away and it gives the space scenes a cool sense of isolation. I really liked that.

Just got back from seeing it. They replaced creepy Yoda puppet with CGI Yoda. Personally, this is one change I'm in favor of, as the Phantom Menace was rather lifeless and unnerving.

The replacement is definitely an improvement, despite my generally preferring puppet Yoda over CGI Yoda. I never liked the TPM puppet either.

I'd totally agree. The hi-def CGI version was the best-looking Yoda since the original ESB muppet.

I forgot to ask earlier, did the opening crawl look fucking awesome or what? I was quite disappointed to have missed it.

Welp, it only made like 42 million and doesn't look to make much more.

I think obviously, as we go the audience response is going to get stronger and stronger then finally die off a little bit for ROTJ.

That's not too bad, really.
Considering the BD release was fairly recent, and this was probably the least popular of the films (meh, it or AotC).
At the Melbourne premiere, the cine certainly wasn't packed, more like well over half-full. It seemed to be mostly parents bringing young kids or people who would have been young kids when TPM came out.

So how much did the 3D conversion cost? Did old George come out ahead?

Seeing as the work would inevitable have been done for a 3D blue ray release anyway I'd imagine most of the money is expected to come from that.

Also as per linky its costing around 10 million per film to update to 3D, so yes he is making quadruple his money.

Going by this link link the 3D update has cost more than the original film did to make which was around 40 million dollars. So assuming hat cost was for all six films and he doesnt go massively over that budget finishing off the rest of them then yes he will be more than making his money back.
