They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

My friends and comrades:
Pvt. 1st Class Raymond M. Werner, 22
Sgt. Ross A. Clevenger, 22
Sgt. Jim Holtom, 22
The fallen soldiers were assigned to the 321st Engineer Battalion, an Army Reserve unit with headquarters at Gowen Field in Boise.
Two soldiers were also injured:
Staff Sgt. George G. Nickel, 37
Sgt. John J. Green, 45
As of this writing, Nickel is in intensive care at Landstuhl; Green's status will be determined but chances are he'll be sent back home in a week.
I had met Werner but not known him, the others were guys I had served with. I've known Green for years and he was with me on my tour in Baghdad, 2004.
Clevenger's remains will be home soon; we are drawing up a funeral detail. No word yet on the other guys.
Rest easy, guys.

Something about Libertarianism always bothered me. Then one day, I realized what it was:
Libertarian philosophy can be boiled down to the phrase, "Work Will Make You Free."
In Libertarianism, there is no Government, so the Bosses are free to exploit the Workers.
In Communism, there is no Government, so the Workers are free to exploit the Bosses.
So in Libertarianism, man exploits man, but in Communism, its the other way around!
If all you want to do is have some harmless, mindless fun, go H3RE INST3ADZ0RZ!!
Grrr! Fight my Brute, you pansy!

28-May
well here in the US we're once again recognizing the sacrifice of previous generations, and those who have died in the current conflict, with barbaques, a three day weekend, and consumption of lots of goods and services.
I'm just a wee bit sickened by it all.

Re: 28-May
On the other hand, it was for our ability to enjoy such liberties that so much was sacrificed. I've yet to see a veteran who passed up a Memorial Day barbeque, whether before or after a visit to a cemetery or memorial service. And why shouldn't we enjoy life? Isn't that what the sacrifices were for? So we can enjoy life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness? I don't think those men and women lying in the ground died for all of us to stand around weeping and feeling guilty all the time. We need to honor and remember what they, and still living veterans, endured on our behalf and for our benefit. So enjoy the weekend, while recalling that freedom isn't free of cost. The Yosemite Bear wrote:well here in the US we're once again recognizing the sacrifice of previous generations, and those who have died in the current conflict, with barbaques, a three day weekend, and consumption of lots of goods and services.![]()

That said - exploiters of sentiment and such days of rememberance are contemptible, but they are in the minority.

Now I did a job. I got nothing but trouble since I did it, not to mention more than a few unkind words as regard to my character so let me make this abundantly clear. I do the job. And then I get paid.- Malcolm Reynolds, Captain of Serenity, which sums up my feelings regarding the lawsuit discussed here.

Quoted in On Killing by Lt. Col. Dave GrossmanJohn Masefield. 1878–
A Consecration
NOT of the princes and prelates with periwigged charioteers
Riding triumphantly laurelled to lap the fat of the years,—
Rather the scorned—the rejected—the men hemmed in with the spears;
The men of the tattered battalion which fights till it dies,
Dazed with the dust of the battle, the din and the cries. 5
The men with the broken heads and the blood running into their eyes.
Not the be-medalled Commander, beloved of the throne,
Riding cock-horse to parade when the bugles are blown,
But the lads who carried the koppie and cannot be known.
Not the ruler for me, but the ranker, the tramp of the "road, 10
The slave with the sack on his shoulders pricked on with the goad,
The man with too weighty a burden, too weary a load.
The sailor, the stoker of steamers, the man with the clout,
The chantyman bent at the halliards putting a tune to the shout,
The drowsy man at the wheel and the tired look-out. 15
Others may sing of the wine and the wealth and the mirth,
The portly presence of potentates goodly in girth;—
Mine be the dirt and the dross, the dust and scum of the earth!
Theirs be the music, the colour, the glory, the gold;
Mine be a handful of ashes, a mouthful of mould. 20
Of the maimed, of the halt and the blind in the rain and the cold—
Of these shall my songs be fashioned, my tales be told.
AMEN.
Every day is victory.
No victory is forever.
No victory is forever.

Nitram: You -are- beautiful. Anyone tries to tell you otherwise kill them.

Another anniversary of the thousands of people lost in the World Trade Towers, Pentagon, and that field in Pennsylvania. A senseless waste of life by people who were filled with hatred.
On this day too I think of the thousands of soldiers already lost in the middle east, many in an unjust war and mourn them as well.
