Hobby for a Sixteen year old

Post by Dr Roberts »

Hello all. My son has recently started a search for a hobby but I don't have a clue about what to suggest. Do you guys have any suggestions and websites, books etc to get started?
Have Computer/Virus/Malware etc. problems or questions feel free to PM me.

Would he enjoy music?

An investment in more ways than one sure, but if he sticks with it there can be definite monetary reward, and could be used to get into college if he plays instruments like tuba or orchestral strings.
Instead of foodservice equipment, let's play with large format projectors.

If you're not opposed to a large initial investment you could go with machining.
Hobby sized Mill or Lathe, some community college courses, and books.

Welding is a lot of fun too.

Carpentry has lower material costs, and turning on a wood lathe is a lot of fun. (wood lathes are cheaper too)

Additional suggestions:
knitting/crochet/loom
painting
chemistry
baking
hiking/camping
fishing
archery
scale model building
Children of the Ancients
I'm sorry, but the number you have dialed is imaginary. Please rotate the phone by 90 degrees and try again.

Robotics? My first introduction was Lego Mindstorms but there are a range of simpler and more advanced entry points at different costs (by sixteen I was working with these). Depending on where you live, your son would likely be able to get involved in FIRST Robotics or RoboCup Junior or some other equivalent.

And another vote for learning an instrument or some other artistic skill (composing, drawing).

Practical? Making or fixing things. Carpentry, metal shop, auto mechanics, home repairs, cooking, needlework.

What does your son like? I can't believe he hasn't started a hobby in some form or another. Does he like to read? Write? Draw? Play games? He must have some sort of interest.

Woodwork or furniture making. Learn a detail focused, practical skill that builds strength and coordination.

I recommend fencing*. Good for the mind and the body, and you meet the most interesting people...

*That's the sport, not the yardwork, of course.

I would heartily second that. You do indeed meet interesting people, I met my girlfriend there.

It's difficult aint it :D We still laugh about first meeting at a club where we learn to stab each other.

Still, it worked out, and back on topic, it's great excersise and a whole lot of fun.

16 year old boy? Shagging should be his major focus, surely.

I have to say I find it quite strange that a 16 year old should need his father to find him a hobby.

Well geez, when I was sixteen, my main hobby was jacking off. But I guess times change.

Depending on his interests, I would recommend his high school's theater club. If he enjoys singing/dancing/performing, let him be an actor. If he likes building things, stage crew. If he's interested in electricity already, the lighting or sound crew. Regardless of his interest, he'll make friends and gain practical experience within a supervised environment.

I think the question that needs to be asked is what does the kid want to do and what kinda kid is he?

If he is like I was when I was 16, he is WAYYYYY ahead of you in the finding hobbies department. You just don't know about it.
If he is your standard nerd kid then most of these would be fine.
