Nuke question

Post by Tsyroc »

Does anyone have any idea what would happen if a nuclear weapon was sunk deap into one of the Middle East oil fields and detonated?

I know that in the U.S. we've had coal fires where viens of coal were
burning even though they were under ground but would anything
like that happen with oil fields?

I keep picturing something sort of like the fire pits of Apokolips (DC Comics Reference) just not in scale.

Which Middle East fields? In Kuwait or Saudi Arabia it would cause huge problems, because the oil in those countries is actually pressurized. If the nuke were to break the surface, it would create a fire that would be virtually impossible to extinguish, and which would burn for ages at a very high temperature, spewing flaming oil to great altitudes.

If it were in almost any other oil field in the entire world, the fire would burn out on its own after a brief period of time, and would be largely restricted to the ground.

That would certainly look like the Fire Pits of Apokolips then. Bad news either way. Too bad it would royally screw the global environment.

The Iraqi oil fields, with a very few exceptions along their southern border with Kuwait, are not pressurized. They would probably not have nearly the problems associated with a nuclear detonation as one in Saudi Arabia or Kuwait.

The United States is also very hesitant to use nuclear weapons in Iraq (for this, and other obvious reasons). The only plans to actually use such weapons in Iraq was a contingency in the case of an Iraqi biological strike on Coalition forces during the Gulf War. In that case, low-yield nuclear weapons that probably would not be able to ignite oil fields would be used to destroy related Iraqi facilities. The UK, Canada, and Israel all had similar plans in the case of Iraqi use of biologically equipped SCUD missiles. The American plan was not much more radical than any of those drawn up by other countries.

Canada has no nukes, although we are considered a "nuclear-capable" country (meaning that we have nuclear and thermonuclear bomb-making materials due to our nuclear power program and we also have sufficient expertise, so we could easily make nukes if we wanted to).

Just out of curiousity, I've always wondered what God drove :)

I myself have ACCESS (doesn't mean I own :P) to a 2002 Jetta GL, baseline with the 4-banger, plus a really nice 2000 Audi A6, with the big 4.2 litre V8, producing 300 bhp with 298 lb ft of torque. VW/Audi engines supposedly have a reputation for superb torque :)

Usually I drive my mom's 1987 Dodge Caravan SE. I'm happy, because it has air conditioning, and I don't give a damn about what I drive all that much, since I do very little driving anyway.

Actually, the exact plan called for "borrowing" low yield nukes from other countries, and helping them deliver the weapons. I thought it was really stupid, but I guess if for whatever reason the US and Britain had gone crazy and decided that it wasn't worth it, then Canada could step in in a couple of months.

I was only wondering. :)

Personally I'd much prefer that there was a different source of energy
that would fill Wong's V8 needs an thus allowing the Middle East to lose
its importance and financial strength.

Of course at this time that is also a dream. Especially with W and his
oil cronies running things.

Russia would be very happy…

Anyway, we'd be looking at one hell of a fire, and laser guided bombs wont be work very well for the invasion of a Iraq.

My son, last I heard, Lord Wongs given name was Micheal and mine was Jesus 'walks on water' Christ. And as Lord Wong is a self confessed atheist, you comment is unfounded and illogical.
Concesstion accepted, my son.

This is the first time you've ever told off a deity? Shit, man. You need to get out more. I tell off Eris all the time.

1 litre of gas costs me roughly 70 cents Canadian, which is equivalent to roughly 45 cents US. I think the Americans pay less than that.

I pay about $16 US for eleven gallons (~$1.45/gallon). That works out to be about 38 US cents per litre, if I'm not mistaken.

At one point back in February, it was just about $1 for one gallon. That was pretty sweet.
And you may ask yourself, 'Where does that highway go to?'
