My question about how precise the FTL drive is.
Implications of small scale wide spread FTL travel.

Read the thread. LOTS of points raised. 'What about?' and all that.
I've been asked why I still follow a few of the people I know on Facebook with 'interesting political habits and view points'.
It's so when they comment on or approve of something, I know what pages to block/what not to vote for.

How much volume would one tonne of fuel take up ?Steelinghades wrote: ↑2019-07-06 12:49amAssuming a craft of Subaru size, one tonne of fuel will last around four days, FTL drives increase fuel expenditure by a facture of three to seven, depending on the size of the craft.
What kind of fuel are we talking about ?

I answered that one earlier in the thread, I used warping into a garage as the example.bilateralrope wrote: ↑2019-07-10 01:03amMy question about how precise the FTL drive is.

All I can say is, I hope someone names at least some new small space freighters after typers of snake.
There are hardly any excesses of the most crazed psychopath that cannot easily be duplicated by a normal kindly family man who just comes in to work every day and has a job to do.

If FTL drives are so cheap it probably means they don't require anything exotic to build. If the how to knowleedge goes out then pretty much any nation or coorporation can build one, maybe even skilled amateurs. It would cause very serious security implications. A future version of North Korea or some terorist organization for example could ftl a nuke or large conventional bomb over White House with no warning. When a delivery system costs similar to a family car first strike suddenly becomes very easy to pull off and impossible to detect and stop. It would change the whole military paradigm.

Remember that the cheap FTL system only includes the engine. Not the navigation system that calculates your desired direction and FTL duration. Not the system that switches off the FTL after that amount of time, nor the system you use to make sure your craft is pointed in the right direction.
So how much error do you expect in those other necessary systems and how far from your destination will those errors leave you ?
