Ok, I'm well and used to the fact that comics serve as a lot of teenage wish fulfillment wank. For example: Power Girl. Or any drawing of a "woman" by Rob Liefield But there are a few things that just go beyond the pale. For example:



She is supposed to be getting hit by a shock wave there. Frankly it looks more to me like she is getting railed by some guy whose name is a cheesy pun. So I hereby dedicate this thread to images in comic books that should be porn scenes.

Turns out, as I was informed recently, that the guy literally traces porn pictures off of google image search or some such source. I remember reading an article in Wizard magazine, listing the comic book characters who exist only to look cool, and utterly fail in doing something that's not already done by a more famous (and skilled, and competent) character. Power Girl is on that list; the writer commented the only reason she's in comics is because of the big "O" in front of her costume. Hell, when I first read about her, I thought, "Who the hell is Power Girl?"

That girl needs to be paired up with a skilled writer who can make her personality distinctive from that of the thousands of other eye candy characters (cough! Supergirl! cough!), AND a redesigned uniform that does NOT draw attention to her boobs and doom her to being remembered as "That superhero chick with the big boobs and the costume with a big hole in it so you how big her boobs are."

That's no fucking excuse. Any Tom, Dick, or Jane with a bit of imagination can draw sexy women WITHOUT tracing over (copyrighted) pictures by other artists. Mark my words, one day, Greg Land will be sued for plagiarism.

Bullshit!! I use reference material. See how a muscle looks in this position or that position. Get the proper fold on a certain type of cloth. Drawing a certain type of a gun, where you need it to look like the actual gun.

What this douchebag does is just straight up plagiarism. He might as well be copy and pasting the pictures onto the panels.

Yeah, using references is totally okay. People are hard to draw convincingly even for skilled artists, and having a reference makes things a whole hell of a lot easier, for many reasons, and it's not at all bad form to use a reference. However, tracing isn't drawing, and it's not like this guy does the inking and coloring either. It's important for people to realize that--I'm pretty sure that all he's doing is tracing the people and then sending it off to the inker and colorer to handle the rest.

Get a comic and imagine if you remove ALL the coloring and inking. Ask yourself what's left. The big fat outlines! How goddamn hard is it to do that part? Not so hard, really, especially when the best you have to do is like Aunt Mae's raisin face there.

Now, look at Powergirl. The folds in the cloth are basically nonsensical, the shoulder connection that we see is bogus and the cloth there doesn't fold naturally at all, and the hair doesn't display any kind of momentum from a shockwave. The face is, similarly, not at all the right face to be making for any kind of pain. Her leg is also all fucked up--where the hell of the calf muscle? Hell, not even the tits are right. Where are her breasts connecting? Somewhere on the left side of her chest? That's not a shadow being drawn in the circle, that's supposed to be a deliniation of the curve, so if you trace the line up, she's some kind of horrible mutant with three breasts like the chick from "Get Your Ass to Mars: Halargglegargle." The problem with Land is that he can't draw, he can't tell when something looks bad, and he traces things instead of interperting them into the fiction. His characters are thus often off-model, posed bizzarely, and badly drawn. Drawing something poorly but being consistant is preferable to just taking a black pen and tracing porn without any conception of three dimensionality or proportion.

Short version: References are fine, but you still need to draw your own thing. He even sucks at tracing, so he ultra-sucks.

There's a difference between using photos for reference and straight-up copying or tracing.

Look at the Emma Frost issues. The stories weren't bad but the first few issues covers were rather blatant. The later ones while still featuring Emma weren't quite as gratutious.

As I say, this particular series did change the style a bit, the same artist I believe, but more sensible.

I thought everyone in the Hellfire Club did; was that not part of their image? Still, I suppose she sets some kind of record for actually dressing down when she joined the "good guys"; for most comics heroines, it goes the other way around.

As for comics drawings approaching porn in general, I think a lot of later-day Catwoman stuff is really bad.

Okay, so since I'm more or less completely out of the loop on the everyday continuity of modern Marvel-verse, I find Emma Frost as a school girl instead of a creepy headmistress confusing. Could someone explain?

Not so much confusing, the Emma Frost issues are more of an "Origins" story, going quite deep into her family. Therefore she is a schoolgirl in the early issues, though the cover art in the first couple of issues doesn't exactly help that.

That's a directory basically of the covers, you can see how Greg Horn, the cover artist was getting his jollies, despite her meant to be a teenager there. They did get more sensible in later issues.

The worst thing about Land is that some of his earlier art had no or almost no tracing in it and it was really good. Then for some reason he decided "Fuck it" and pretty much just gave up.

Seriously, compare his work on Phoenix: Endsong with, say, Ultimate Power, where the image in the OP is from. It's ridiculous.

I'm just baffled as to how he's still getting work.
