SWTOR webcomic

Post by Seydlitz_k »

The first issue of the Star Wars: Old Republic webcomics is up (For those who don't know, they are making a webcomic to publicize the game). Check it:

http://swtor.com/media/webcomic/act1?page=1#/0/

Doesn't seem very exciting or interesting. Pretty generic stuff. Spoiler
Sith say they want to sign a treaty, but that is only a cover for a surprise attack (So much for jedi precognition...again). I like it how the massive Sith fleet somehow just manages to jump into coruscant orbit without being detected. it's great how a planet like Coruscant only has a few small stations in orbit to detect incoming contacts...and you know, not some high end security system which covers the whole system and light years around it. Not like it's an important planet or anything.
Alderaan seems to be a lot more densely populate than usually depicted. Look at all those buildings and air traffic.

Drawings are average at best. kind of wonky in some of the panels.

Ah yes, the Sith. Made up entirely of white men... :? Where are the aliens?

Also can't they detect ships on hyperspace? Why the heck do they need eyeball stations?

I'm getting way too much of a Darth Vader vibe from Lord Angral on page 3.

Maybe it's because... Spoiler
The Sith have the ability to "cloud" or otherwise impair Jedi's precognition, right?

I believe that ability depends on large number of people dying with the pain and suffering blocking their view of the force. And the greatest Sith Lord who ever lived. Of course, they could have watched the original Battlestar Galactica to figure out what would happen.

Honestly though, why attack during negotiations? Who would be dumb enough to put all their forces on one planet?

Since the Sith were having trouble taking anything in the Core, I suspect this is to set up the whole "sacking of Courscant yet not overrunning the Core in its entirety" that's part of the game's backstory. For once, a Sith Empire that isn't über-powerful, not even after 1,300 years of planning.

Seriously, I know this period of history hasn't been mapped out in great detail, but it still seems like they're just cramming shit in there for the hell of it. And making it cliched and predictable to boot.

How many Sith Wars are there in this span of 500 years? Three? Four? I'm with Havok. Can't any author come up with something which isn't a rehash of KOTOR and the movies? Something besides, "Didn't know you know all of SW history is guys with red lightsabers fighting guys with blue and green ones? RAR!" please?

Issue two is out. http://www.swtor.com/media/webcomic/act ... page=4#/6/

And the rehashing of SW history continues...so much so, that both Republic Troopers AND Sith Troopers now look like stormtroopers, lol!

The difference of course, being that Sith Troopers look like a head on collision between Darth Vader and a stormtrooper, and that Republic troopers look...exactly like clone troopers?

Come on Akkleptos, the sith clouding the jedi's judgement...again? You'd think they'd have caught on after thousands of years of intergalactic conflict :) .

Plus in a galaxy where ships can jump around the galaxy freely, you'd think they'd have some sort of defense force stationed around their most important planet? Especially since the current war is supposed to have been going on for decades.

They could have come up with a more interesting reason for the sack of Coruscant. Pretty much anything aside from the standard "Deceive and Attack" evil villain routine.

Of course if there isn't a *GASP-BACKSTABBING-SITH* moment, the writers think it's not Star Wars. I agree with Havok and Illuminatus. We need some more original story ideas.

It seems like the Sith are stuck outside the Core and need a quick victory to get their terms accepted by the Republic. It's still a nice, little difference from other Sith stories. No "rar we're INVINCIBLE" this time around.

Yeah, I like the idea behind the events. I like it how for once there is an actual treaty signed, and it's not Sith Overlords Conquer Galaxy again. It bears a resemblance to the Dutch raid up the Medway in the second Anglo-Dutch War.

I just think the execution is terribly generic. I don't like the idea the the republic was caught completely off-guard in yet another sith feint, it strains believability.

Here yet again, the Jedi are show to be completely naive about their sworn enemy. The Sith have never respected anything ever, You'd think the republic would at least be suspicious enough to remain on guard during the treaty negotiations. I mean, the Jedi Master in this issue actually says "Warships. We were fools to trust the Sith"...No shit! And the Republic capital Citys' first line of defense seems to be half a dozen of security stations which can't even identify a fleet of sith warships! I mean, come on.

They might think the Sith are too far away to bother having extensive protection of Coruscant itself, rather than more outlying systems.

But, yes, I'm not impressed by the level of one-liners, sorry, "dialogue".

I'm fine with the armor looking similar- after all, they probably didn't invent it out of thin air thousands of years later.

However, landing troops in a raid... why? How about we strafe the building, drop incendiaries- anything that gives you better odds of getting away before being obliterated by reinforcements!

As for "too far away"... I think range is good enough that anywhere in the galaxy can be hit by raiders. Not to mention prior to the war the threat of pirates/criminals/angry nuts with guns would be big enough to warrent defense.

Derivative in the worst possible way. Just because technology has remained stagnant doesn't mean that there hasn't been an original idea in 25,000 years. How is Palpatine's Empire even historically significant if it and the wars surrounding it have been duplicated countless times before and since? I would almost prefer WH40ks "nothing ever changes ever" to this endless cycle of light and darkness, Republic and Empire, Jedi and Sith.

Are you fucking kidding me? Did some one just write a Jedi saying; "We were fools to trust the Sith!". Have these people even heard of Star Wars before they got this job? Yeah, our sworn enemy for thousands and thousands of years that has brought war to the galaxy at every opportunity, and brought the Jedi to the brink of extinction multiple times... sure, lets trust you. Lets sign a treaty... WHAT THE FUCK?! YOU TURNED ON US AND BROKE THE TREATY?!?! Man, that is SOOO not like you. :banghead: :banghead:

And hey lets do Darth Vader, but with a funky helmet, and that will be our badass version of Stormtroopers!! DUDE! We'll call them Sithtroopers!!! SWEET!!!! *HIGH FIVES*. It's like 12 year olds are writing and designing this.

And on the topic of not actually seeing Star Wars, do these people realize that not every single Jedi is an uber badass that can take on platoons of soldiers at once? Seriously, every time a new piece of shit like this comes out, it just further trivializes what Anakin, Obi-Wan and Yoda could do.

Edit: Why the fuck is some dill hole LT addressing the Galactic Senate? That's like an intern giving a state of the company assessment to the CEO and Board of Directors.

And the art is still ass. I'm tempted to sign up there and rip this thing apart, but I imagine I would be banned post haste.

Don't bother. Within 30 minutes of posting a comment similar to what you've said here I've had my ability to comment on the comic revoked.

To me, the problem isn't that the armor is not original, but that it bears too strong of a resemblance to the fairly contemporaneous Mandalorian Neo-Crusader armor. It makes sense for Clonetroopers to be wearing Mandalorian armor, but it doesn't make sense for the Old Republic, enemies of the Mandalorians, to be issuing their forces the bad guy's kit. Not to mention that this Republic soldier is armed with a Clone Wars-era DC-15A.

Why didn't they plunder ideas from KOTOR 1&2 instead of from the Clone Wars? The KOTOR games must have had damn near a dozen different repeating blasters, disruptors, etc. to borrow, not to mention all the different types of armor if for some reason the established Republic trooper style was undesirable.

Oh, and another thing: anyone look at the helmets of the Sithvadertroopers? How are they supposed to see out of those "vision slits" that appear to be strategically placed right between the eyes? Talk about tunnel vision....

With that kind of logic, the AK-47 would never come to be, since it was based on a German assault rifle, three years past.

And a little reconcilliation with the whole "lol orbital security sux" thing:
Comic issue 2 preface wrote:After destroying the planet’s satellite security stations
So the Sith fleet didn't just bomb one single station, there were multiple. Probably more like a scattered network like the Golan stations in the Empire.

Generally blowing up stations in orbit tends to alert the populance below that something is going on.

Also, assult rifles are different than body armor, which is used for identification purposes. I just read about the air war over Europe and having planes look different is... important. The same holds true for armor.
