Your first computer game

Post by Bertie Wooster »

What was the first computer game you ever owned and played a lot?

For me it's either Jumpan or Space Invaders (which came also with a star trek-esque choose-your own adventure game, and another game called martian or lunar lander. I started playing those two games on my Compaq in 1986.

The first game I ever played on an Apple was Oregon trail, and that was in 1988.

Amazon Trail? Boy, that was a fun little bugger... :)

If not that... Rebel Assault 2. For all it was shitty, I loved it... :D
It's a strange world. Let's keep it that way.

I remember playing a number of games on the Apple IIE, but for actually owning them, I think that'd fall to Commander Keen 5, and Wolfenstein.

First real computer game? Probably this space flight sim called Star Crusader that came with our first PC. Fun and nicely-done for the time, with full audio VAs and decent music and sound effects.

First program that constituted having some form of fun on a PC? I forgot the name, but it was one of those default Windows games that came with 3.0, something where you've got a ball flying around an enclosed space, and you've got these deflecters you can set up at various points or stretch/shrink to manipulate the ball's movements. Never really played it that much, to be honest.

First game that was all my own? One Must Fall 2097. Good GOD, did I love playing that game. Didn't have the ability or know-how to play on-line against other people (not to mention no decent controller) but I can rip those bots seven ways to sunday on standard speed settings (medium, not that super-hyper-turbo-crack-fueled-speedfest you'd get with speed dialed all the way up) on heavy metal. Played it so much that the CD no longer works that well, as a matter of fact...

Man, I have to download it from abandonia one of these days (I own the game good and proper along with the special guide that came with my purchase).
This has been another blunder by you friendly local idiot.

First real computer game?

Either Myst, Warcraft II, or a Lucasarts Adventure Chest. Can't remember which came first.

I remember playing some baseball game on a C64. I also remember playing Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards on an old PC. There was the odd spot of Oregon Trail on Apple IIEs, but that was later, in my school years. The first game I earnestly played, I think, was Wing Commander.

You guys are all so young! :D

My first game was frogger, on a black and white television. And when you're 4, it's fucking hard.

I was too young to have a solid memory. It would've been either one of many Texas Instruments cartridge games, a roguelike adventure thing on DOS, Astro Grover and similar DOS titles, Oregon Trail maybe, it's hard to say.

Chronological order of release is no guide as to which was first purchased for me- especially since there were multiple Adventure Chests released, and I got more than one.

Yes! That was the second game we had. The first game I had was Nightstalker on the Intellivision.

For computers, I guess it would be Commander Keen.
