Re: Fusion, anyone?
even if we assume it really means hydrogen fusion, it's overruled by sources higher in canon (feats in the film are impossible for simple hydrogen fusion).
while I might be repeating myself the energy density for hydrogen based fusion is simply too low for most of the stuff pulled off in the SW movies even if we ignore stuff like the Death Star and I'm pretty sure current canon states that SW ships use hypermatter reactors, not nuclear fusion ones.
that out of the way, next time could you please post text rather then a scan and a comment or 2 wouldn't hurt either.

Well, for all we know, hypermatter might be fusionable. Since no one knows what a hypermatter reactor is, it could very well be a fusion reactor built to handle hypermatter fusion. Hypermatter fusion might have a very high mass-defect, explaining the enormous amount of energy produced.
Or, even more complex, this fusion might produce antimatter which is anihillated...![Rolling Eyes ](./images/smilies/icon_rolleyes.gif)

A minute's thought suggests that the very idea of this is stupid. A more detailed examination raises the possibility that it might be an answer to the question "how could the Germans win the war after the US gets involved?" - Captain Seafort, in a thread proposing a 1942 'D-Day' in Quiberon Bay

perhaps, but without comment from the orginal poster, I have no idea how I'm suppose to interpit this.LaCroix wrote:Well, for all we know, hypermatter might be fusionable. It looks mostly like passive-aggressiveness; it is not like this issue has not come up before and been beaten down ad nauseum.
Though I did like the bit about the DS having the mass of a planet, that gives us hints on Imperial materials science and construction.

Re: Fusion, anyone?
Hmm. Supposing it is powered by fusion, this fusion reactor must generate 1E33 W. This is three million times the output of the Sun. This is not unheard-of in stellar terms; the giant star Eta Carinae, for instance, has luminosity 5e6 times that of the Sun; 1 LO = 3.8e26 W, so Eta Carinae generates 2e33 W. What is the mass required to sustain this operation? The specific energy of hydrogen wrt solar power generation is about 6.5e8 MJ/kg. If the Death Star has enough fuel stored to sustain its generator for two weeks (we'll take this as a lower limit), it would need enough fuel to generate 1e39 J = 1e33 MJ; this is, assuming perfect efficiency(!), 2e24 kg. This is about a third the mass of the Earth, which is consistent with the description of "generated immense gravitational fields".
A Government founded upon justice, and recognizing the equal rights of all men; claiming higher authority for existence, or sanction for its laws, that nature, reason, and the regularly ascertained will of the people; steadily refusing to put its sword and purse in the service of any religious creed or family is a standing offense to most of the Governments of the world, and to some narrow and bigoted people among ourselves.

He's just a trolling little shit. He can't even be bothered to make arguments because he knows they'll get shredded and that his own intellect isn't up to the task. So he does weak-ass shit like posting this: the basis of one of the most well-worn arguments in the entire debate, and doesn't even add his own commentary to it. He'll do something similar in future, when his Mommy lets him use the family computer again.
