Star Trek fighter Craft

Post by Typhonis 1 »

I may be given the Imperial Smackdown for this but....They have no fighters in star Trek the Peregine is a Gunboat or maybe even a patrol torpedo boat .Lets face facts here a fighter is a short ranged one or two man craft deployed from a carring ship. The Peregine has a crew of tweleve this is seen from Voyager because even here Mr.Wong has shown that the Peregine and the Maquis "Fighter"are similar ships and have a crew of 12 .The other"Fighters also seem to have these large crews of aprox 12 men Even the Jem `Hdar fighter had a crew of 5 or 6 .the ships show they have some range, andf maybe the Delta flyer could be classified as a fighter but they have a heck of a lot of wasted space in it almost all fighter craft are cramped quarterd.Feel free to mock ,ridicule and burn me but this is my opinnion based on the visual evidence.Stargne how they never showed em launching any Pereguines and how they resemble Klingon bird of Preys :D

well, they do have the Tach Fighters. You can see them in action here:

(the Episode name is "The Maquis Part II").

However, they are the most ungraceful, sluggish fighters you could ever ask for....

X-wings, A-Wings, Y-Wings, Tie-Defenders, Tie-Advanced all can go from one side of the Galaxy to another on one tank of gas nothing short ranged about em :)
As for the one tank of Gas I'm guessing but then in EU you never see Looking pulling over at the Space Gas Station to filll 'er up
But then it might be why few movies feature anyone going to the bathroom
:)

Thats all completly beside the point I just wanted to fill up space till I said
I think your nearly right, Theres gotta be ONE fighter out there somewhere. bob knows where that could be called a fighter in ST

*cough* the tac fighter. 2 man fighter seen in the Maquis part II, used by the federation during the Dominion war.

Was that Runabouts VS. Maquis supposed to be in slow motion? All these clips show fighters making slow turns and nearly htting their targets. Get a couple of people who are good at Descent 3 and they could own the Federation fighters.

The exact same design as the Maquis are using was used for the Starfleet fighter only twice to three times as large. I think that the Peregrine is probably like the B'rel/K'Vort, there are two models with one being scaled up. As Starfleet doesn't have much use for fighters until large fleet engagements, the larger version as well as the Ju'day Raider (which is similar to the Peregrine) are probably used as short ranged patrol ships like the torpedo boats and cutters of modern navies.

I agree with Typhonis 1 on this issue. The Federation does not have 'fighters' in the same sense as the SW and B5 powers. Trek 'fighters' could most probably be best described as 'Gunships' or 'Cutters'.

Even the Delta Flyer is basically a utility shuttle (like a Lambda or a STT) that has been slightly customised with non-Fed technology.

 A true Federation fighter would be somthing like this: A warp drive (with nacelles armoured like those on the Defiant and Delta Flyer), a massively over-powered impulse engine (and manoeuvring thruster system), over-powered shield generators, two or four Level-8 pulse phasers (about the same output as the pulse disruptors on the Klingon Bird-of-Prey), plus external racks for various Photon or Quantum ordinance packages. Oh, and a small single-seat cockpit at the front with just enough room for the pilot and his/her controls. It might not even be a pressurised cockpit. Overall size wouldn't be much larger than a Mk9 shuttle (like the 'Cochrane' in one VOY episode). Visually it would probably look a bit like the Minbari Flyer from B5.

Of course, as the brilliant essay 'The Wonderless World of Star Trek' suggests, the Federation probably has ideological and political objections to the starfighter and its' emphasis on individual/small team efforts. That is why the TIE Defender and the TIE Raptor will come as such such a shock :D
