Re: Biden says right to choose 'fundamental' after leaked document suggests US could allow abortion ban.

How will the sainted second amendment save people? Little known fact, you have the right to shoot two government officials as an American. (That's why it's the second amendment. Just like the third is about saying no to people who try to use your house three times. The fourth time they can, because...

Without commenting on anything else going on here (and there is much to say) it still blows my fucking mind that Clarence Thomas is asking questions during hearings. Truly we are in a parallel universe.

Re: Did the Death Star have a hidden purpose?

They don't say it's impenetrable, and I don't think it's ever positioned as a planetary shield just as something shielding the Death Star and the direct approach to the base on the moon. Did they have to say it?. They certainly treated it as such, especially after the trap was sprung and their crui...

Re: How many people during the Empire knew Palpatine was a Sith?

Do we know that the Rule of Two is actually a thing? The only source we have is a Jedi, who is A. shocked that the Sith are back from the grave and B. not exactly trustworthy sources on the Sith in the first place, much less after thousands of years of non-interaction.

Re: Did the Death Star have a hidden purpose?

Can't edit the post after an inadvertant click to post it. Intended post below: If this is just an arms race between more powerful shielding and more powerful orbital guns the question is "What utility does the Death Star have over simply building more ships?" and there is no satisfying mi...

Re: Did the Death Star have a hidden purpose?

Maybe? So, at the very least, I think this nixes the idea that we should take the General Veers line as indicative of the impervious nature of the Rebel shielding (as has been trotted out here and elsewhere.) As for the fuller questions of shield capacity and deployment, we know the power of the BDZ...

Re: How many people during the Empire knew Palpatine was a Sith?

That's all pretty good points. Also, at this point; the Sith are seen as legends -- in TPM the Jedi Council was skeptical of the Sith: >SNIP< So, obviously, I like this read of events. Here's the a priori question then: How many people knew that the CIS vs. OR war was also Sith vs. Jedi? It's non-Z...

Re: Did the Death Star have a hidden purpose?

Re: Hoth. I just rewatched the beginning of ESB. Two interesting notes: First, Vader clearly frames their finding of Hoth as an attempt to capture Skywalker. On being shown the shield generator he says: "That is the system, and I am sure Skywalker is with them . Set your course for the Hoth sys...

Re: How many people during the Empire knew Palpatine was a Sith?

. So calling them an "ancient religion" makes no sense, ditto proclaiming that devotion to the Jedi way is sad. I'm not sure this reading of the words is fair. Ancient just refers to age, not to wether it still applies in recent memory. Likewise, someone following a strict military doctri...

Re: Ukraine reacts to fears of Russian invasion as troops build up at the border

There's a sequencing issue with your reading here. The US, NATO, et al. promised there would be no encroaching into traditionally Russian spheres of influence, and that there would be no basing of US troops in those areas in the early 90s. In the mid-90s to early '00s that was torn up and thrown aw...

Re: Ukraine reacts to fears of Russian invasion as troops build up at the border

You care because that's how international relations works. Escalation is how grievances are aired and addressed, and is the way in which nations make clear just how concerned they are about international situations. I'll add that it's interesting you focus on this rather than the rest of the post w...

Re: Ukraine reacts to fears of Russian invasion as troops build up at the border

Why should the rest of the world care about Russia's fragile self image, especially when it requires them to threaten their neighbors? If Russia wants to be a great power, perhaps it should seek to do it via technological, social, economic, or diplomatic advances rather than by force. You care beca...

And to be dismissive of those neighboring countries' rightful fear of Russia and its desire to impose its will upon them is nothing short of saying "you have no right to be free from a tyrant". I do not particularly care about calling out Western hypcrisy if it allows another, at this poi...

Re: Ukraine reacts to fears of Russian invasion as troops build up at the border

I am well aware of Nato not being a sovereign nation. However, Ukraine and other possible applicant nations are and Russia is demanding in a roundabout way that they have no right to seek out an alliance with forces that could defend them from Russia. If Russia wants a stable peace with Nato OR its...

How many people during the Empire knew Palpatine was a Sith?

Inspired by Shep's Death Star thread. How many people knew Palpatine was a Sith lord? Or, at the least, in line with the Sith? It must be a non-zero number. Lore around the Jedi is common enough (even an enslaved twerp from a outer rim planet knows enough to recognize a Jedi on sight), if so lore ar...

Re: Joe Manchin backstabs the Democratic Party on Fox News

I think the majority of the Democratic party wanted to pass something . They were never, ever, going to pass the $6 Billion that was initially floated, but a lot of them wanted to pass something so that they could go home and take credit for it at the electorate, and some even because they wanted to...

I agree with much of the hate that the ST gets, and believe me it deserves it and so much more, but we cannot advance conversations like this without accepting the canon as offered. While I was in the shower yesterday, I came up with an idea that can rationalize the "Holdo Manouver" in a ...

I think he just genuinely doesn't want to spend the money. He's one of the last of the conservative democrats that have otherwise died out.

I also think he really really really likes being powerful and in charge.

Joe Manchin backstabs the Democratic Party on Fox News

Joe Manchin declared Sunday that he could not support President Joe Biden’s sweeping social and climate spending bill, striking a decisive blow to Democrats' agenda. The West Virginia Democrat bluntly said he is a “no” on the $1.7 trillion in an interview on “Fox News Sunday.” “If I can’t go home a...

Re: Did the Death Star have a hidden purpose?

Han says 'A thousand ships with more firepower than...' than what? An Execcutor? A torpedo sphere? At best that indicates that it's unusual for the Empire to 'Amass' that many ships OF THAT POWER in one place. It doesn't say anything about how many ships they have. You've missed the point. I agree ...
