(Spoilers) The new Battlestar Galatica

Post by HemlockGrey »

It actually looks pretty good to me, but I sense a lot of hostility towards it. Thoughts?

All I've seen thus far are those little short clips, and one good sized preview.

Personally, I'm worried. I hope it won't go down the "modern" route and try to have a bunch of sexual interaction and stuff. But with the main character (seemingly) being a woman and that one teaser where she's just sitting in a red dress for no reason I can determine...I'm worried it might.

But, seeing some other teasers (especially Adama with the caskets) has me thinking that it should, at least, have some good moments. I'm willing to give it a shot.

They made Starbuck into a woman, IIRC...

To me it sounds like they are femminizing it. Battlestar Galactica always made more conservative statements that shows like Star Trek. I am not talking just the religious stuff, about survival through power and such (dealing with the cold war at the time). I am hoping they did not do a new-age-Star Trekonize far left wing agenda it.
I also think they should have left the original alone, there can be a million more stories that could fit without interfering with the original, like a prequel, a couple decades after, or a resistance of whats going on in the colonies after the Galactica left.
I will still watch it giving it the benefit of the doubt.

They picked an intresting date for its release.

Really? All I've seen so far is December (though I wasn't paying too much attention to the more recent ones in that regard).

And I agree with ya, Sam. When I saw the female Starbuck (or whoever she is...seems like a central character given the trailer time), and then her in the red dress teaser, I've been fearing the worst.

Not that a female pilot is bad (they had some IIRC in the original), but when it's a central character and they devoted a teaser to her in a red dress looking "sexy" or whatever, makes me fear we'll get some "Seven of Nine" and "T'pol" sextoy-type epsiodes/scenes... :(

The hostility is because it bares about as much resemblence to the orginal Battlestar: Galactica as the new Planet of the Apes does to the orginal Planet of the Apes. They lifted the names and some of the most basic premises but really ignored everything else. It's the bastardization of the series to punch up the sex and violence that angers the fans hoping to see a genuine revival.

I'll judge it on it's own merits when I see it but a successer to the orginal it's not.

Well, to be fair, the Viper looks close to the original, and they kept the silly mechanic orange suits. :)

And with the Adama teaser with the caskets, I'm hoping they'rell at least be a few good moments, even if they did try getting the sex factor up (why in the FUCK do these recent scifi shows keep doing that?).

I've heard that they changed the Cylon design. If that's the case, then I might not even watch it at all.

No, that's an evil Cylon who sexes up Baltar to steal secrets from him.

They look more evil than the original series, which were obviously men in suits. The basic design is the same, they're just bulkier and more intimidating.

And they kept the monkey's in Planet of the Apes. A few similarities don't much matter when you change everything else. :?

They're going to for the basement dwelling, horny moron, virgin-loser-fanboy demographic. In short, lowest common demoninator sci-fi.

The ships are there, the names are there, the Cylons are there.

Battlestar Galactica is missing.

From what I've seen of the sets, they are a vast improvement. They simply look really cool and intelligently designed.

That strikes me a bordering on the edge of patently absurd.

Why not judge it on it's own merits, rather than complaining about deviations from the original(it hasn't even been released, how do we know how much it deviates?) as proof that it will suck? The original wasn't really wonderful, either.

Just curious, but, where the fuck are you getting your information? All I have seen thus far are a few teasers and one trailer.

So how do you know what the "woman in the red dress" is already if it's not out until December? :?

Some of us here are, like me. I won't consider it to be any part of the original Battlestar Galactica, though.

A New Hope didn't have a spectacular or original plot but the atmosphere made it a good movie. The same is somewhat true of BSG (except for Boxey, I will concede that).

Spoilers, oh stubby one, spoilers.

If nothing else there have been so widely spread reviews by people that have seen it at advanced screenings and other things of that nature.

There's an early draft of the script somewhere, plus spoilers I've read.

Ah... In that case, shouldn't we be burning him now for posting spoilers about something that hasn't even been publically released yet without so much as a warning?

Starbuck being a woman is hardly a spoiler...anyone watching those ads can see it for themselves.

Saying "Woman in the Red Dress is really a Cylon spy" on the other hand...

1) No, you can't. There's no caption that says "Starbuck."

2) It's no secret.

Thanks. :)
1) No, you can't. There's no caption that says "Starbuck."

2) It's no secret.
1) Fine, I'll conceed that, but it's a fairly logical conclusion to anyone who knows about the original; Starbuck was a fairly central character, and given the preview time she's gotten, she seems to play a large role.

2) It is to those who have seen nothing but the previews! Unless it is clearly demonstrated the very first time she/it/whatever appears in that episode, it would be a spoiler. And, at any rate, you're still giving away a plot point well before the show would normally be viewable en masse!

You immediately jump to male Starbuck instead of female Athena, a character also known to have the ability to fly a Viper? Because that's what I thought originally.

BZZZP, wrong-o. Baltar himself says to her in a preview "You're a new breed of Cylon." to the red lady. It's repeatedly said in the same traitor that there are mimic Cylons. It appears you just aren't current enough. :P
