The Agony Booth does "The Fight" (VOY)

SUMMARY: Voyager is trapped in "chaotic space". The unseen aliens that inhabit the area turn on Chakotay's "crazy gene" during a boxing match in the holodeck. Despite fearing for his own sanity, Chakotay goes on a vision quest, meets his dear old (and decidedly crazy) grandfather, and spars with the aliens in boxing matches. The aliens communicate with Chakotay—mostly by punching him in the head—and eventually he pushes the big ol' Reset Button, er, I mean, he uses the aliens' knowledge to help Voyager escape from "chaotic space".

Seven, resplendent in her blue catsuit, explains that the Borg have known about phenomena like this for years. They're areas of "chaotic space", places where the laws of physics are in a constant state of flux. Areas of chaotic space come and go at random, she explains, which is why Voyager didn't detect this one until too late.

So the Borg... play 'Warhammer 40,000'? If Berman & Braga are that desperate to rip off Games Workshop, why didn't they hire some of the people who write Space Marines fluff? That can't make things any worse... can it?

Yeah, Brannon Braga obviously ripped off some obscure overpriced line of toys. I bet he has a whole Space Marine army in his basement.

And when Wesley Crusher was preparing to head off to the Academy, Picard told him to seek out Boothby for counsel. Using true Holmes-like deduction, we must conclude from the current scene that Jean-Luc Picard A) has a hidden sadistic streak, and B) shares most everyone's dislike of Wesley Crusher. "Wesley, you should listen to Boothby. Ask him to teach you about boxing..."

Win.

Also, the episode confirms that Janeway was not exactly A-grade material at the academy. Hooray for incomptence.

I get the sarcasm, but the similarities between the "chaotic space" in 'Voyager' and "the Eye of Terror" in 'Warhammer 40,000' is HUGE. It may be coincidental, but that's a mirror universe kind of coincidence.

From what I could tell, not really. This episode's experience in "chaotic space" hardly resembled the Warp in 40K; we didn't see anything like demons manifesting, physical alteration, mass insanity, or time slowing down/speeding up.

All of the weird stuff encountered by Chakotay was because of the aliens, while "laws of physics being in a state of flux," which certainly implies that a whole bunch of weird stuff could happen, ended up amounting to severe "space turbulence."

Seems like you're only making the connection because "chaotic" sounds like Chaos, which is like asking why George Lucas never sued J. Michael Straczynski because Babylon 5 also used the term "hyperspace" to describe FTL travel.

"A place where the laws of physics don't apply that is called 'chaotic space'" is an impossible coincidence? Or is there more to this Eye of Terror that I don't know about that Voyager specifically ripped off? Because I'm pretty sure Games Workshop does not have sole claim to the concept of an area of space which fucks up the ship and makes people crazy.
