SDnet history buffs, help me out.

One of my favorite groups put out a song called 'Rainmaker' and it has the following passage:

The people wanted power and reputation galore
So they became a bunch of bullies
In the Assorted Sizes War
And they sailed around the global block
Looking for some heads to knock
And most of them came home heroes
Heroes in a box

I heard the phrase 'assorted sizes war' before I heard the song, but I cannot remember for the life of me where it's from.

Which war is it referring to?
"You say that it is your custom to burn widows. Very well. We also have a custom: when men burn a woman alive, we tie a rope around their necks and we hang them. Build your funeral pyre; beside it, my carpenters will build a gallows. You may follow your custom. And then we will follow ours."- General Sir Charles Napier

It sounds sort of familiar...

I don't know where I've heard it though. Are you sure it wasn't a similar phrase and you're not just making a leap?
'After 9/11, it was "You're with us or your with the terrorists." Now its "You're with Straha or you support racism."' ' - The Romulan Republic

'You're a bully putting on an air of civility while saying that everything western and/or capitalistic must be bad, and a lot of other posters (loomer, Stas Bush, Gandalf) are also going along with it for their own personal reasons (Stas in particular is looking through rose colored glasses)' - Darth Yan

The phrase

sailed around the global block

makes me think of a modern war, or at least something involving lots of countries. Maybe one of the World Wars?
"I don't believe in man made global warming because God promised to never again destroy the earth with water. He sent the rainbow as a sign."

"And BTW the concept of carbon based life is only a hypothesis based on the abiogensis theory, and there is no clear evidence for it."

I want to think it was the Mexican war, but I'm not sure.
From a southern viewpoint (but the Rainmakers are from Kansas) it could refer to the Civil War.

Like I said, I'm certain I've heard the phrase prior to the song itself but I'll be damned if I can remember what it referred to.

Personally, I'm reminded of Anson's circumnavigation on board HMS Centurion of 1740-1743, where hundreds were lost to disease, but only two to enemy action.
Some pretty vague lyrics, though.

^The lyrics do not specify how those would-be heroes died, though. Also, the guys were buried at sea iirc, so that kinda speaks against the box thing.

The first thing that came to my mind was the Vietnam war. Why? Because "global blocks" has only gotten associated with the cold war, and it just seems to fit. Also, assorted sizes might refer to the alleged power imbalance between the Vietnamese and the US, and the Vietnam War is the first war where I can remember seeing the pictures of dead US soldiers in rows of "boxes".

This is a pretty vague song, and I admit that the part about the majority of them dieing speaks against my theory. Still, the Vietnam War was the first that came to mind.

Then, it seems that the only way to survive is to use the means of the enemy, to rest survival upon what is expedient, to look the other way. Well, the answer to that is 'survival as what'? I think I heard the phrase in reference to the first war where machine made uniforms in individual sizes (instead of tailored ones) were used.
Could it be the Mexican war?
Or could it be referring to something from British history?

I agree. The phrase "global bloc" is pretty specific to the Cold War.
