Rampage shooting in Santa Barbara by misogynist 22-yo.

Post by Terralthra »

SFGate wrote:GOLETA, Calif. (AP) — The family of a man they believe went on a shooting rampage near a Santa Barbara, California, university called police several weeks ago after being alarmed by YouTube videos "regarding suicide and the killing of people," a lawyer said Saturday.

Police interviewed Elliot Rodger and found him to be a "perfectly polite, kind and wonderful human," family attorney Alan Shifman said.

Shifman added that police did not find a history of guns, but did say Rodger "didn't have a lot of friends," had trouble making friends and didn't have any girlfriends.

Shifman is the attorney for Peter Rodger, who was one of the assistant directors on "The Hunger Games." Authorities have not confirmed the identity of the shooter.

Police said a gunman driving a BMW near the university campus went on a rampage that left seven people dead, including the shooter. Authorities described the tragedy as "obviously the work of a mad man."

Seven people remain hospitalized with gunshot wounds or other injuries, including one who has undergone surgery, following the shooting spree Friday night in the beachside community of Isla Vista, Santa Barbara County Sheriff Bill Brown said.

The gunman got into two gun battles before crashing his black BMW into a parked car. Deputies found the lone suspect dead with a gunshot wound to the head, but it wasn't immediately clear whether he was killed by gunfire or if he committed suicide, Brown said.

A semi-automatic handgun was recovered from the scene near the University of California, Santa Barbara. Investigators know the gunman's name, but Brown said he couldn't release it pending notification of relatives.

Describing the atrocity as "premeditated mass murder," Brown said, authorities were analyzing a disturbing YouTube video posted that shows a young man describing plans to shoot women that appears to be connected to the attack.

Officials would not say whether the person in the video was a suspect in the shooting.

"It's obviously the work of a mad man," Brown said.

In the video, posted Friday, the man sits in a black car and looks at the camera, laughing often, and says he is going to take his revenge against humanity. He describes loneliness and frustration because "girls have never been attracted to me," and says, at age 22, he is still a virgin. The video, which is almost seven minutes long, appears scripted. The identity of the person in the video could not be independently confirmed.

The shootings started around 9:30 p.m. in Isla Vista, a roughly half-square mile community next to UC Santa Barbara's campus and picturesque beachside cliffs.

Alexander Mattera, 23, said his friend Chris Johnson, was walking out of an improv comedy show when he was shot in front of a popular pizza place. He stumbled into a nearby house.

"He walked into these random guys' house bleeding," he said.

Mattera was sitting at a bonfire with friends when at least one gunshot whizzed overhead. The friends ran for cover when they heard the barrage of gunfire.

"We heard so many gunshots. It was unbelievable. I thought they were firecrackers. There had to have been at least like two guns. There were a lot of shots," he said.

The shootings occurred at several sites, resulting in nine crime scenes, police said.

A visibly shaken student told the station she was approached by the driver of a black BMW who flashed a handgun and asked "Hey, what's up?" The student, who didn't provide her full name, said she thought he was carrying an airsoft gun and kept walking. She said seconds later, she felt something buzz by her head and quickly realized they were bullets.

Kathrin Schirazi Rad got a call from her 21-year-old son, Adrian Timothy Petersson, who told her in a shaky voice that he had been knocked off his skateboard by a BMW being chased by police about 9 p.m. Friday. He hurt his shoulder, but he went home after being checked by first responders to the scene.

"He was in shock," said Rad, who lives in Sweden. "He saw some plastic bags and said somebody must have died. He couldn't confirm anything. He was pretty shaken up. It was so many things happening at the same time."

The victims' identities were not immediately released.

In a statement, the University of California, Santa Barbara said it's "shocked and saddened" by the shootings. The university said several students were shot and taken to the hospital.

No deputies were injured or shot. Brown called it a "heartbreaking situation for a community next to a world-class university."

Isla Vista has a reputation for excessive partying. Last month, an annual spring bash spiraled into violence as young people clashed with police and tossed rocks and bottles. A university police officer and four deputies were injured and 130 people were arrested.

The community has experienced other tragedies in the past.

In 2001, the son of "Ally McBeal" TV director Daniel Attias ran down four pedestrians with his car on a crowded Isla Vista street. Witnesses testified that part-time college student David Attias got of the car and shouted: "I am the angel of death."

David Attias was ruled insane after he was convicted of second-degree murder and is locked up in a state mental hospital.

Dillon reported from Goleta, California, and Watson reported from San Diego.
You can pretty easily find the alleged shooter's YouTube channel, though the video in which he says he would kill sorority girls because he's a virgin has been taken down. Other videos are there with similar content, and his posts are easily found on forums where he says that feminism is evil because it lets women control which men breed. The alleged shooter subscribed to lots of PUA and MRA media sites and streams, and spews their rhetoric pretty consistently. Of course, the media is mostly treating this as "insane" rather than "ideology of radical chauvinism has predictable results for man unable to put it into practice".

Posters on "PUAhaters.com", a forum for people who tried PUA techniques and failed, had a thread full of congratulatory posts calling the alleged shooter a hero for his rampage before the site was taken down earlier today.

I saw his video before it was taken down and it's both chilling and somewhat tragicomic. He basically rants about how women have scorned and rejected him, even though he is the perfect male (his words, not mine) and how not having sex has turned his life into a living hell. And finishes off with "if I can't have you no one will." So yeah. Seriously messed up.
It has become clear to me in the previous days that any attempts at reconciliation and explanation with the community here has failed. I have tried my best. I really have. I pored my heart out trying. But it was all for nothing.

You win. There, I have said it.

Now there is only one thing left to do. Let us see if I can sum up the strength needed to end things once and for all.

He's alive. He went to go grab something to eat from a restaurant. He's well enough that he can type things out online. Beyond that I don't know.

He got shot maybe 300 feet from my front door.

I mean no offense but escorts will have sex with you as long as you give them money.

It's not very good for one's self-esteem to feel the only way you can ever have sex is to pay for it, though.

I actually kind of pity the guy, to be honest. How totally empty, bereft of meaning or purpose and generally shit does your life have to be that you still determine your entire worth as a human being by what base you've got to and how often ten years after puberty?

I just wish the poor dumb fucked-up bastard had been self-aware enough to ask himself, "What am I doing wrong?" instead of developing a persecution complex and falling in with the perfect echo-chamber for it. And now seven people are dead because one of them never got some decent relationship advice.

Or maybe he did, but didn't listen. Or the voices in his head egged him on. Fuck, I don't know; I almost hope it is one of those two options, because there's something profoundly depressing about the thought that our very own ARSE sub-forum could potentially have prevented a spree-killing.

What this guy needed was some professional therapy. Not a bunch of half-baked advice that he could have found anywhere on the internet.

Whelp that got worse fast. They are pulling bodies out of his apartment.
News story
KEYT wrote:The Santa Barbara County Coroner's team has established a crime scene at the apartment complex where suspected shooter Elliot Rodger claimed he lived, prior to Friday's mass murders in Isla Vista.

NewsChannel 3 witnessed forensics experts removing three bodies from the Capri apartment complex on the 6500 block of Seville Road Saturday afternoon.

There is no confirmation from authorities whether this latest discovery increases the number of people killed, which stands at seven, including the gunman.

The timing is significant based on a more than one hundred page manifesto Rodger allegedly published hours before the killings.

"On the day before the Day of Retribution, I will start the First Phase of my vengeance: Silently killing as many people as I can around Isla Vista by luring them into my apartment through some form of trickery."

Sheriff Bill Brown will give an update on the investigation during a 4:00 p.m. news conference from the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Headquarters.

NewsChannel 3 will carry the news conference live.

So, this kid thought he had everything a woman could want, and felt it was everyone's fault but his that no woman would sleep with him, so he'd kill all the women he could?
Yes, sociopathic. And, according to the news article in the BBC news, they have confirmed him as Elliott Rodger, the son of the filmmaker. The three inside the apartment were his roommates, and they had been stabbed. It is still suspected the shot that killed him was self-inflicted.

But then, there is this:
Earlier, Peter Rodger's lawyer, Alan Shifman, said that the "family believes the child was the perpetrator".
He said Mr Rodger's son had Asperger's syndrome, had trouble making friends and had been receiving professional help.
While Asperger's can lead to social awkwardness and peer stigma, violence of this nature is unusual. This is simply going to raise up more fear of functional adult austistics.

Though I have not seen them myself, and have no interest in doing so, this sack of shit described himself:
"I don't know why you girls are so repulsed by me. I do everything I can to appear attractive to you. I dress nice, I am sophisticated, I am magnificent. I have a nice car, a BMW. . . I am polite. I am the ultimate gentleman. And yet, you girls never give me a chance. I don't know why."
If anyone wants to see the videos, it appears most of the other ones are still up.

If comments are enabled, don't view them. I'm sure many of them will be nauseating.

I wonder if this kind of cultural standard is a recent phenomenon? It's crazy that a guy would feel the need to feel this way at the age of 22. At the age of 22 you are still relatively young and you are likely not to be financially independent. There's more stuff to be worried about, and more stuff to feel your worth about than whether you are a virgin or not.

I don't think its too far of a stretch to say someone can feel that way at 22. Vast swathes of culture in just about every medium present the idea that sex is something you must have as early and as often as possible or you're not any kind of man. Even here, virgin and permavirigin was a go-to insult for a long time.

Of course most people don't go on killing sprees because of it but still...

Eh I wouldnt even blame Asperger's. This guy sounds like another George Sodini.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2009_Colli ... p_shooting

The perpetrator was 48-year-old Scott Township resident George Sodini (September 30, 1960[6] – August 4, 2009), a systems analyst at the law firm of K&L Gates.[7]

On a website registered in his name,[8] Sodini chronicled over a nine-month period his rejections by women and his severe sexual frustration. "Who knows why? I am not ugly or too weird. No sex since July 1990 either (I was 29)," he writes. "Last time I slept all night with a girlfriend it was 1982. Girls and women don't even give me a second look ANYWHERE." About his problems with women, he wrote: "Women just don't like me. There are 30 million desirable women in the US (my estimate) and I cannot find one."

He also wrote about contemplating carrying out a shooting, which he referred to as the "exit plan",[3] while also revealing that he "chickened out" of carrying out such a shooting earlier in the year. The website states that he was "never married" and concludes "Death Lives!" Sodini states, "Probably 99% of the people who know me well don't even think I was this crazy."

Sodini is reported to have left a note along inside the gym bag stating his hatred for women.[5] In 2008, Sodini posted online videos, in which he discusses his emotions, along with a tour of his home, the latter which was a homework assignment from "a self-help seminar [he] had attended on how to date women".[9]

Believe it or not, I myself was diagnosed with Aspergers about six months ago and like him I have trouble making friends and am virtually useless with women- I have a total of 2 one night stands to my name and one serious relationship- my ex was the only person I slept with more than once. Hell, my first wasn't until just before I turned 24 (I'm 29 now). It's not hard to imagine how something in his mind just snaps, though in his case it seems he was just batshit crazy.

I have to wonder if, in real life, these guys manage to set off the CreeperMeter of every woman they encounter, thus why no woman wants to touch them.
