Not only that, but at least ID4 realized that humanity had no fucking chance against the aliens. The good guys only won by a stupid deus ex machina (no excuses for the ending, besides that it was a popcorn flick). This novel has the Koreans going toe-to-toe with America throughout the war.Deathstalker wrote:Independence Day was a popcorn flick, meant to show big explosions and humanity truimphant. No one takes it seriously. The author of the Korea wank, from what I gather, is quite serious and has no tongue in cheek humor. And Degan said he couldn't believe something couldn't be typed with one hand, this guy used his nose, because this crap was a two hand wankfest.
From reading that link, the Def-Con author is supposed to be the Korean equivalent of Tom Clancey. Not to say Clancey is perfect either, but if that's true then it shows that this guy is taken pretty seriously over there.

Holy shit I just read a few comments by that "Feudalist" guy that posted about the book. I didn't realize that they are taking the book so seriously. The guy is actually trying to defend the book and with gems like this no less:
"Besides, there is a scene where Mexican gangs joining the invasion
killing several CIA operatives. "
Yeah
that explains it all.

If the US wanted to be really nasty it would let the SoKs keep the NorKs! North Korea is one of the worst hellholes on the planet, absorbing it will sink the southern economy like half a dozen torpedoes under the keel. The train wreck that was DDR will be like the bargin of the millenium compared to North Korea.

The funny part is, in this senerio the US lost more than a Trillion dollars in property damage. Germany lost 1.5 Trillion dollars and counting on reunification.CJvR wrote:If the US wanted to be really nasty it would let the SoKs keep the NorKs! Most Koreans do not think about this though. When I was in Korea I helped out an English class, and we had a conversation about the US, and reunification with the North. Most of them did not even think about the economic impact of reunification.
In the most likely senerio, Korea reunifies and begs for U.S. and U.N. assistance. And the U.S. would most likely end up with bases along the Chinese and Korean border, convincing the Korean government China is a threat.

I'm of Korean descent and I say...wtf is that guy smoking?
It's the young people. They do not realise the danger that lies just a stone's throw away from then. My grandfather fought in the war and he's as pro-American as they come. They older people remember how bad things got. Most Koreans do not think about this though. Yes, you are correct, they were all younger people in the class. The older generation is very pro American. As a GI I have never felt so much gratitude from a people than I did with the older generation there. One of the old Koreans I used to talk to told me to take a look at most of the forests in Korea (South). If you take a close look at them, the older trees are all growing in rows. The U.S. pretty much replanted the forrests in South Korea in rebuilding efforts.hongi wrote:I'm of Korean descent and I say...wtf is that guy smoking?

It's even typed out in Engrish and reads like Kim Jong Il's mode of speech from Team America (and this Korea topples US story is just as stupid but unintentionally so)."The Korean forces they dynamite the Alamo, wrecking it utterly."

This is just as fapped out as some of the guff said in Spacebattles.com where some people honestly believe Israel would defeat France, Britain or even fucking Russia.
Why do some Koreans take this wishful thinking so deadly seriously?

LINK because they think that the Americans are oppressing them and making them slaves in their own country etc etc.
They believe that the Americans want Korea to be seperated to justify US troops on the peninsula, and further US meddling in the region. They also believe that the Korean gov't is somehow conspiring with the Americans to accomplish this.

I've seen other examples of South Korean hatred for the US. Do these guys seriously think they'd be better off joining (or even living under the thumb of) the North?

Hey, man did you not watch Jack T.Chick's comic tracts! It's all there! Enemies of Israel (commie-gay-europeans and dirty-ahrabs) would close in on them but with power of God the Israeli Forces shall smite them! This is just as fapped out as some of the guff said in Spacebattles.com where some people honestly believe Israel would defeat France, Britain or even fucking Russia.

The South has been increasingly nationalist lately indeed

Can't blame them for being anti-American, however, it's not as if they don't have a prime example of what happens to a country if it gets in or close to that sphere of American interests, y'know... the military one.

Well I think Korea had a negative relation with the Soviet Union, the Japanese Empire and Red China as well - South Korea is relatively pleasant in comparison to North Korea, even though the SK was ruled over by politicians and military officers who were essentially Fascist. But this very silly story about the US-Korean war has no excuse for it's rabid anti-Americansim and is not even that well written or that entertaining (except in a pulpy "so-bad it's good" kind of way).

Curse the lack of an editing function on here (I come a cropper on here too many times as well, in terms of annoying typing errors).

But I agree some of the posters on Spacebattles.com and Trek BBS have ridiculous assumptions on military capabilities, warfare or alternative history (on another I can remember some arrogant idiot who stubbonly believed that Gibralta could not be taken by the Axis powers and that the Earl of Halifax in Churchill's place would NEVER sue for peace with Nazi Germany).

Rabid nationalism has the tendency of evolving into bigotry against the most closely interacted with nation.
Especially if said nation with it's action contributes to the perception which nationalist bigots are trying to create.

Well if Japan is virulently nationalistic and xenophobic, I heard that Korea is worse again (if that's possible) and while Korea had overall been given the shit end of the stick by Japan during it's imperialistic arsebag stage I guess there were many native Koreans who fully sympathised with Japan's militancy and could've joined as soldiers in the Japanese war machine (it was a similar story with the minority of Poles, Dutch, French, Scandinavian and Russo peoples who joined the Axis during WWII).Stas Bush wrote:Rabid nationalism has the tendency of evolving into bigotry against the most closely interacted with nation.

I haven't bothered reading Spacebattles in years, but I remember some of the military scenarios being discussed there being even worse than this Korean wank. I can't find the exact posts, but I recall a current-day US Army vs. Civil War Confederacy (I'm NOT fucking kidding) thread where someone seriously argued that the Confederates would win:
-The Confederate troops would move into thick forests and other difficult terrain, thus minimizing the threat of tanks or air strikes.
-Snipers placed in hot air ballons could take out AH-64 Apaches by shooting their pilots through the windows.
-Civil War era artillery was wanked out and assumed to be able to cut modern day infantry to shreds.
-General Lee's uber tactical skills would carry the day.
Seriously, what the fuck is wrong with some of these wankers? Whether the subject is USA vs. Korea, UK, or the fucking Confederate States of America, the average layperson would rightfully assume that the US military would completely kick the opposition's ass. These idiots are so stupid that they can't even give the obvious default response.

If you want to talk about that shit then you should tell the whole story. In large the people that thought the Confederacy would win were laughed at by a large majority of SB.com. The difference is SB.com didn't ban people like that at the time.Jim Raynor wrote:I haven't bothered reading Spacebattles in years, but I remember some of the military scenarios being discussed there being even worse than this Korean wank. Do you think I'm attacking Spacebattles as a whole or intentionally trying to make it look bad? I don't concern myself much with SB, but I don't have any particular hatred for it either. Nor do I think everybody there is the same. There are quite a few people on SD.net who are also long-time SB members.Kamakazie Sith wrote:If you want to talk about that shit then you should tell the whole story. As I said, I haven't kept up on that site for years, and I can't even find that specific thread (didn't SB lose a lot of old threads?). I just somewhat remembered reading some of that insane crap from back in 2000. Based on what others have said in this thread, it seems that SB still has some idiots who wank out ludicrous military scenarios.

This scenario is ridiculous, but it is at least entertaining! If a work of fiction is entertaining its flaws can be forgiven, but if it's not then it doesn't matter how good it may be from a technical point of view.
