Okay, someone explain to me the practicality of having the nacelles sticking up like that?

Not having to think too much and come up with their own design?
They say, "the tree of liberty must be watered with the blood of tyrants and patriots." I suppose it never occurred to them that they are the tyrants, not the patriots. These Two aare worse IMO. If I ever see anything looking like these while I'm driving a starship, *SLICE!* Out comes the Contraband Slicer Beam Cannon (™ Shadows) I got stowed in the trunk! I'm sorry, but Jesus Q. Christ Getting Gently Fucked with a Chainsaw, those fucks at FASA are artistic incompetents.

And yes, I feel somewhat qualified to make that assertion because I've been designing my own starships for a couple years... :D

The Klingon designs are kind of a grab bag - they overuse common elements (like the D-7 command pod and nacelle) and occasionally they really, really suck (like the KDF-2 K'Mirra-class and the L-13 Fat Man class).

True but if you think of it it also allows themn to build a much larger fleet since they are using "off the shelf" parts for some things . Also I like how they say there are times that an L-20 was often mistaken for a D-7 and how yes there are lemons but that happens IRL as well.

The Rommy Nova is awesome, but some of the other ships are truly horrid. All the monitors and Gunboats are lemons, and wtf is with putting a Kling BoP in with the other Rommy scouts?

The Klings have a few good'uns like the D-20 and the Escorts, but the L-13 (Fat Man) is truly comical and the D-11 One Wing is the most Craptacular ship i've seen in a while! I never thought FASA had it in them to outdo those other ships I named. But they did it.

Gorn ships are consistent across the board and seem to conform to a design ethic the Empire could appreciate: Large, durable-looking slab-sided wedge shapes with a minimum of frills and very short warp-nacelle pylons. These beasties are pure function, which actually helps their aesthetics greatly IMHO :D How these ships could be designed by the same hands that made monstrosities of most of the Feds I do not know...

Oh ok. I think part of my disgust for a Rom BoP is that I know exactly two things about the Kling-Rom Alliance: Jack and Shit. :D

Well I *DEFINITELY* cheated on this contest: I got bored and shat out another Trek ship. This one's a fighter called the 'Spitfire'.

Ship Specs:

Fed Light Fighter: Codename 'Spitfire'
Length: 25.82 Meters
Crew: 1 Pilot, 1 Gunner
Powerplant: Standard Small Warp Core with Two Warp Nacelles; One Fusion Reactor with Standard Impulse Deck
Performance: Warp 5 (cruise), Warp 7 (max)
Weaponry: One Heavy Beam Phaser Cannon, Two Double Pulse Phaser Cannons, Provision for 100kg Disposable Stores
Defense: Standard Shield Grid; 1-5cm Ablative Armor
Special Equipment and Capabilities: Can enter atmosphere at orbital velocities and sustain a velocity of Mach 2.8 at 1 atmosphere with no ill effects

Confederate Light Fighter: Spitfire (name unchanged from Fed version)
Length: 25.88 Meters
Crew: 1 Pilot, 1 Radio/Sensor Operator
Powerplant: Small Quantum Singularity Power Core with Two Armored and Uprated Warp Nacelles; One Fusion Reactor with Afterburning Impulse Deck, Two Auxiliary Impulse Engines
Performance: Warp 7 (cruise); Warp 9 (max)
Weaponry: One Heavy Beam Phaser Cannon, Two Double Pulse Phaser Cannons, Two Double Long-Range Disruptor Cannons, Two Twin Pulse Disruptor Turrets, Provision for 2000kg Disposable Stores (depicted are twelve matter-antimatter warp torpedoes on four triple underwing racks)
Defense: Multilayered Regenerative Shield Grid; 2-8cm Neutronium-Composite Armor; Transporter Inhibitor/Sensor Jammer
Special Equipment/Capabilities: Ejectable Lifeboat Nose Section, Auxiliary Impulse Pods on Wing Trailing Edges, Romulan-type Cloaking Device; Upgraded Sensor Systems; Can enter atmosphere at orbital velocites and sustain a velocity of Mach 4.5 with no ill effects

The Spitfire was developed at the same time as the Gunboat it's distantly related to. When the Confederacy overthrew the Federation, they, as usual, gave the already-powerful Spit a much-welcomed overhaul into a pure killing machine. The Rebels invented a fighter-launchable programmable-yield photon torpedo as a result of massive advances in mimiaturization after the stagnation of the Federation was lifted, and this is what we see fitted to the Rebel Spit. This development, along with the Quantum Singularity reactor, upgraded weapons, engines, and cloaking device give the Spitfire much more long-range capability to balance its excellent speed, maneuverability, and dogfighting ability both in space and in atmosphere.

It's still no match for an X-Wing or a TIE fighter...

EDIT: I doubled the length of the fighter because 13 meters sounded way too small for a fighter this powerful. They're both about 26 meters long now.

Refit of the Connies that appears abit later in a fanfic I'm writing. The Connies lived on into the 2300s, they were fitted with phaser strips and brand new nacelles, the same used on the Ambassadors. The Connies were largely decommsioned by the 2360s though, as Ambassadors, Nebulas and Galaxies replaced them.

It has already been shown that the Constitution-class or an updated variant thereof does see frontline service in the TNG era. One was one of the wrecks at Wolf 359 in "The Best Of Both Worlds (2)". A more detailed view of this ship can be glimpsed briefly in the episode "Booby Trap" —if you look real closely in one scene in the holodeck recreation of the Utopia Planetia design lab, there is a study model of this ship sitting on a desk console in front of Geordi. The differences in design include the addition of spaces for sensor arrays where viewports were located along the rim of the saucer section, and warp nacelles in a similar design and horizontal-mount configuration as those of the Constellation-class starship.

1. We don't know if those were actual design concepts or if they were implemented.
2. I don't give a flying f. :P

Here is a ship design that the Federation might built after the Dominion war.

Name : Federation class

Class : Battleship

Length : 1800 meters

Warp speed : Warp 9.997

Weapons : 18 Type XI phaser arrays
4 Quantum torpedo turrets
18 Photon torpedo launchers (12 Forward 6 Aft)

2 Heavy forward pulse phaser cannons

1 phaser cannon

Shields : 5 times the shielding of a prewar Galaxy

New Technologies : Abalative armor, regenerative shielding, bio neural gel packs, phaser cannon, experimental transwarp drive

Support craft : 24 Pergeine fighters.

Description : After the Dominion war the Federation realized that they needed a new class of ship to counter to the formidable Dominion battleship. As a result Starfleet began work on the Federations own battleship design.
I have to tell you something everything I wrote above is a lie.

Bippity!

Boppity!!

BUMP!

Here's the Spitfire.

Federation Version

Rebel Confederate Version

Rebel Zero-Length-Launch Warp Torpedo, aka Z-Photon Torpedo (think of it as a fancy full-size 100-megaton Photon Torpedo with its own full-fledged miniature warp drive. This allows it to be launched from even small fighters! I'm also planning a Cluster Torpedo and a Quantum Torpedo variant...)

But no Trek ship I know of can kill something 17.6 kilometers long with shields that can easily eat half of Starfleet's quantum torpedoes for breakfast in one gulp, then return fire with thousands of weapons each with anywhere from six megatons per shot to SEVERAL DOZEN TERATONS per shot! Then it can fly away at over a billion times c?

That is beyond uber. That is beyond wank. Whoever designed that ship sucked himself off right after he was done designing it!

*stomps into the thread with yet another Wicked Weapon Design *

BlackShark Torpedo

Rebel Confederate Fighter with Quantum and Blackshark Torpedoes

You guys can thank my good friend Vertigo1 for borrowing the BlackShark idea from Descent and whipping me up into enough of a buzz that I promptly went ahead and designed the thing.

Concept: The Quantum-Singularity Implosion Torpedo is a devastating weapon which creates a microscopic artificial Black Hole which then shunts into subspace after a short time ranging up to a minute after it hits the target. This weapon has a variable 'Blast Radius' (spherical area within which the BH exerts over a 10m/s^2 acceleration due to gravity) which can range up to about 30 kilometers in diameter. It has a Zero-Length-Launch capability allowing it to be used effectively by a small fighter, but with some penalty in maneuverability (the torp masses a good eight metric tons!)

When the Blackshark is launched, the quantum singularity reactor activates and begins forming its black-hole singularity as it heads to the target. Then upon impact, it penetrates into the target, burrows into the target's structure, sets up a subspace bubble connected to a deep layer of subspace, and deactivates the QS containment field. This results in the target's quickly becoming consumed by the small Black Hole within. Then when the subspace bubble decays after anywhere from ten seconds to a minute, it snaps the black hole into the subspace domain, effectively removing it and its effects from realspace. If the target's shields are up, it simply accelerates to high velocity and 'detonates' just outside the shield perimeter. This causes the BH to blast through and terminally overload the shields and rip a neat hole through even the toughest of targets, allowing a followup BlackShark to consume the now-shieldless vessel.

This weapon was conceived as a Last-Resort 'Bunker-Buster' or anti-capital-ship weapon, and it was specifically designed for it to be carried by even the smallest combat vessels used by the Confederate Navy. It allows the Confederacy to decisively terminate any large threat decisively and cleanly with even a force of small starfighters. The most likely targets envisioned for a Blackshark attack would be a Borg Cube or a very large enemy starbase. Large 'moving-wall' formations of enemy ships as seen at the Battle of Chin'Toka could also conceivably be destroyed with BlackShark torpedo attacks as well. Unfortunately, this weapon is dangerous to use within five hundred kilometers of a planet, and the neutronium alloys used in the warhead cannot be replicated. This makes the warhead extremely expensive on top of the expense of the large ZLL Booster the weapon uses. Overall, the BlackShark Torpedo is a devastating heavy weapon with advantages and disadvanges like any other weapon, but it is a necessary measure in an increasinly hostile Galaxy.
