The transporter sniper rifle is the funniest. To bad they does not realize that a Aratech sniper rifle (from KOTRT2 dialoge) can hit targets at 120 km away.

I'll be honest: if someone told me to do that crap, I'd tell them to fuck off. I got enough real work as it is already, and doing algebra is to a math major like doing the dishes to a master chef. Of course one should still be able to do it, but it is tedious bullshit. Who the fuck wants to do long division to find a seventh power, or remember the goddamn binomial theorem.
The real proof obviously comes from a scan of the degree, or in-depth calculations with mechanical analysis (yes, something a lot more involved than plugging numbers into Newton's second law.) I've been guilty a few times of throwing around my oooooooohhhhhhhhh math major too, and I've regretted it every time, because incomplete means absolutely nothing.
If you really want to test him ask him to prove Cauchy-Schwartz for complex numbers or anything definitely above first year Calculus... Vector Calculus or even higher from third year if you know it, something from set theory or topology. But again that shit is tedious and not worth proving to some lame-o on the Internet, so whoever makes the claim to be "big man" should be the one doing it.
But again I don't see the point. Where are his calculations and analysis, listing out the assumptions he makes? That seems to be key, the assumptions.

At my high school one could take up to three semesters of Calc which was the equivalent to Calc 1 & 2 at the college level.Ryan Thunder wrote:That is, we didn't learn about integration at all (as opposed to derivatives of integrals, which is how some may have read that... )

Then again, my school does seem to have been more focused on the arts...

Yeah, I learned a good deal of Calculus (derivatives and integrals, including trig functions) at my high school, and that was just the less intensive version.
Obviously, that doesn't actually prove JMSpock's had a full high school education, just that he has access to those kinds of sources.

Actually Mike, nobody in Ontario teaches Calculus anymore. Or they're not supposed to. Older teachers gave the finger to the new cirriculum but I'm not sure what they're doing now.
Since the elimination of OAC, nobody does Calculus. You go into university with a ripshod understanding of trig and that's about it. Completely inadequate for first semester university.
AP still exists, but I'm not sure what it takes to get into it, and not all public schools have AP.

Politics. A conservative called Mike Harris came in mid 90's and put in a new policy of failing more students and taking away Grade 13. The transition was rough, and tons of teacher's strikes. The new liberal government came in and promised peace. The price of peace was smaller class sizes, and more importantly less failing students. This of course, means no Calculus, or less Calculus.Darth Servo wrote:Why?brianeyci wrote:Actually Mike, nobody in Ontario teaches Calculus anymore. Or they're not supposed to.
You know it is politics when the failure rate goes dramatically down double digits over just a couple years. Changes in education happen in small increments, and if it happens by a lot like it did here you know it's watered down.

Use this for referenceAratech wrote:One more question: anyone got a clue where Muunalist is located? I'm trying to figure out its distance relative to Hypori.
Muunilist is all the way up there in the part labeled "Empire", near the top right, near Bastion.
Hypori, while not on the map, at least I didnt see it, is said to be in the Arkanis Sector which also includes Tatooine and Geonosis, placing it nearly all the way at the bottom of the map.
Hope that helps.

In any case, it's rather irritating that people talk about "calcs" as if a scientific or engineering analysis is nothing more than math. It is quite possible to produce a sci-fi "calc" with flawless math which is also totally wrong, because it is based on false premises and leaps in logic. In fact, the math required for the vast majority of sci-fi calculations is pitifully simple, and should be well within the abilities of a high-school graduate.

But Mr. Wong, they haven't had those advanced classes, like basic calc based physics, so how can they be expected to figure out that comparing a MJ kinetic impactor with a thermal weapon isn't valid. I mean, its not like common sense tells you that burning yourself and cutting yourself do different kinds of damage to your body. They both hurt!

What's worse is the commonplace stupid assumptions, like people who think that a device which does almost no work must consume huge amounts of energy if it does anything that we can't do today. A classic example is shielding or artificial gravity or integrity fields; why do people assume that it is so energy-intensive, when it does no work most of the time? Do they even know what "work" means in physics?Dark Hellion wrote:But Mr. Wong, they haven't had those advanced classes, like basic calc based physics, so how can they be expected to figure out that comparing a MJ kinetic impactor with a thermal weapon isn't valid.
