Why are we so enamored of the Japanese?

That's because anime is foreign to us.
The average Japanese person thinks Americans all own guns and probably wouldn't want to watch anything made in Hollywood if they didn't like action movies.

"Less filler" is really more an indicator of "planning"; I can't speak for other nations' shows but American television often writes series week-by-week as they go along. Remember the cliffhanger in Star Trek TNG where Picard was revealed to have been assimilated into the Borg and Riker orders Worf to fire on the Borg? When that episode aired, the writers had no fucking clue how they were going to resolve it next season.lance wrote:The better shows seem to be 6-26 episodes long. Probly due to less filler.

Since a lot of anime is based off manga, series with lots of episodes (Bleach, Inuyasha, Naruto, etc). are often waiting for the manga to catch up and finish out their plots before they continue with an existing arc. So they have to create extra stuff to make up for that since Japan doesn't really have TV "seasons".Uraniun235 wrote:"Less filler" is really more an indicator of "planning"; I can't speak for other nations' shows but American television often writes series week-by-week as they go along. Considering the "other popular series" has the fighters giving long speeches in which they brag about how much more powerful they are than their opponents before, during, and after a fight ('Dragonball Z', 'Naruto'), or whining about how war is unjust in between their killing sprees ('Gundam', 'Gundam SEED', 'Gundam SEED Destiny, 'Gundam 00'), this is NOT a good sign.DPDarkPrimus wrote:It's not especially different from previous shounen mainstream titles, so I suppose you can complain about that, but "it's got a similar storyline to this other popular series" is what's everyone complains about when looking at mainstream entertainment, is it not?

Those gun nuts do not understand the meaning of "overkill," and will simply use weapon after weapon of mass destruction (WMD) until the monster is dead, or until they run out of weapons.
They have more WMD than there are monsters for us to fight. (More insanity here.)

I second that. Film episodes that are loyal to the original manga, stop, wait for the mangaka to write up more chapters, and film more episodes that are loyal to the new chapters. (The 'Hellsing' TV series is a textbook example of how filler crap and diverging from the original manga can slaughter an anime series' entertainment value.)Darth Raptor wrote:Which begs the question of what's worse: When they stall out forever with inane filler crap like Bleach, or dovetail with the manga and nosedive in quality like Fullmetal Alchemist. Tough call. I'd really prefer they just go on hiatus when it comes to that.

I'm pretty sure Fullmetal Alchemist went its own way after it ran out of manga. For example, the biggest alchemical array in the TV show is the size of large town, while in the manga it's the whole dammed country. It's similar to what they did with Trigun, the TV show went its own way. Though TV Trigun went its own way from the very start, the first few pages of the manga don't occur until Ep. 6 in the TV show. The Hellsing TV show also did the same after the Valentine Brothers attack the mansion, coming-up with entirely different plot lines and characters.Darth Raptor wrote:Which begs the question of what's worse: When they stall out forever with inane filler crap like Bleach, or dovetail with the manga and nosedive in quality like Fullmetal Alchemist. Also, FMJ kicked ass all the way through. I will agree the end was weak, but "nosedive" ain't warranted.

There are some pretty large exceptions to the rule though. Card Captor Sakura, for people who like that genre, was dramatically improved upon from the manga in the anime. Of course, CLAMP also had a heavy role in the creation of that series, which might explain things somewhat. A fairly large number of anime being created now have little to no creative input from the original writers of their manga.Sidewinder wrote:I second that. A lot of the Manga available now seems to be uninspired toss, Star Wars Manga is a bit of mixed bag like the conventional Western comics, but Akira is hands down in the top ten list of graphic novel sagas, much better than V for Vendetta for example (and I've never seen the anime movie version of Akira).

The film Akira is like the first three volumes extreeeeemely condensed, with some of the events of the last volume present at the end.Big Orange wrote:A lot of the Manga available now seems to be uninspired toss, Star Wars Manga is a bit of mixed bag like the conventional Western comics, but Akira is hands down in the top ten list of graphic novel sagas, much better than V for Vendetta for example (and I've never seen the anime movie version of Akira).
