Zor, shut the fuck up. The purpose of the wiki is not to completely mirror the board. It is to provide a convenient source of reference material for the "vs" debate. If people want to experience the board, they'll come to the fucking board.
That also goes for any of you other imbeciles out there who intend to make the wiki look like the goddamned Testing forum.

Excuse me, but I have the impression that some Trek technology and ship articles are copied and pasted from THIS SITE.

All copy-paste material should be deleted and repeat offenders should be banned with extreme prejudice. It is explicitly against our policy to allow copy-paste articles, and this is starting to get out of control.lord Martiya wrote:Excuse me, but I have the impression that some Trek technology and ship articles are copied and pasted from THIS SITE.

The wiki mods know about this. If you're referring to Judgeking, Stark has warned him.lord Martiya wrote:Excuse me, but I have the impression that some Trek technology and ship articles are copied and pasted from THIS SITE.

I just went on a wholesale deleting spree in the ST Starships category removing anything that looked copy-pasted. That doesn't leave much, if anyone wants to start writing original articles to replace the deleted content.Darth Wong wrote:All copy-paste material should be deleted and repeat offenders should be banned with extreme prejudice. Yeah I just started uploading images from Trek Core. They've got hundreds of thousands of images. I thought that was ok for a couple reasons: first because Trek Core doesn't own the images themselves, and secondly because we're not stealing their bandwidth.
The only serious problem I see is some high resolution. I could alter them to be low resolution to be on the safe side.
If it blows I'll take them down, or ask someone who has the actual DVD's to take screencaps of the important events.

I think I might be taking a hell of a risk by doing this, but does my Trektard article look any good?

just couple of (stupid) questions.
first should I add the operation details of Death Star Superlaser (from the Death Star novel) to the superlaser page?
and Second is there any good guides how to edit wikis and such?

So I understand how to flag a word or phrase as a link to a new page, but how do I make that link go to another part of the same page? Or is that not possible?

IIRC you can link to subtitles made with the ==subtitle== format. If you want to link to the "puppies" section of the "cute" article, the link would look likeSea Skimmer wrote:So I understand how to flag a word or phrase as a link to a new page, but how do I make that link go to another part of the same page? Linking to a subtitle is exactly what I want to do, but all that command you suggested does is let you give the new page a different name then the link name. Its not terribly important all and all, but right now the HAB page is riddled with useless links and it makes no sense for HAB to have multiple pages.

Sorry I haven't been very active for the last few days: appointments and really long working days have eaten into my time.
On the weekend I'm planning on cruising the ship-class articles and purging the fuck out of the cut-n-paste stuff if it hasn't already happened. Replacing them with stub-like articles based only on observed canon phenomena shouldn't take more than a few hours, and with actual references and everything. I think this could encourage people who actually know more to add stuff, whereas the blocks on cut and paste shit actually discourages further contribution.
I'm also not happy with the front-page layout, and I'll spend ten minutes making a 'mock' frontpage to see what people think. Pretty much I'm planning on shrinking/shifting the image and presenting the categories in a different way with less screen real-estate required to hopefully speed navigation. I'm not sure if I want to change too much, as moving categories etc sounds like a lot of work.
Wayne, thanks for identifying Judgeking. I'll be busy much of tomorrow, but I expanded the policies page with an eye to giving Shep a freer hand: if any of this shit goes on, warn them once then PM/talk-page Shep or myself to ban them.
With regard to images, I believe wiki etc simply cite ownership on the image page itself. I'm not sure if a place like Memory Alpha could really claim ownership of images which are simply screencaps from DVDs, though.
I'd like to thank the consistent, quality contributors too. There are some good articles popping up.

Some of you fucknuggets, or at least some of the random people appearing on Wiki (especially that Judgeking guy) need to take a hint.
"We" is a goddamn first person plural. Use fucking third person, and maybe pop open a real encyclopedia article and read it to see what I mean. We is a fucking lamer tactic, used by weak writers to drag readers along with their premise rather than presenting the premise itself and allowing the reader to come to their own conclusions.
All articles should be written in third person objective. That means fucking it, he, she, they, with appropriate pronoun substitutes. That also means no colloquialisms and no fucking slang. Excess meaningless words can also be stripped. Use specific nouns and verbs rather than adverbs and adjectives, the weasel words of English.

If you haven't yet, please take a look at the front page's Talk page for a couple links that need to be fixed.Stark wrote:I'm also not happy with the front-page layout, and I'll spend ten minutes making a 'mock' frontpage to see what people think. Do we have rights to create a new page? I want to do an entry on the Bird of Prey both Romulan and Klingon (Separate entries) and I can't seem to figure out how to create them unless I don't have rights.
Also on my starship entries I want my first few lines to all look like this:
Class: Constitution
Registry: NCC-1701
Captain: James T. Kirk
However they come out looking like this:
Class: Constitution Registry: NCC-1701 Captain: James T. Kirk
Is there a way to get those hard returns to show up?

Search for the title of the new page (ie, "Klingon Bird of Prey"). The result'll be blank, but there'll be a "create this page" link next to the "page doesn't exist" blurb. Like so:Stravo wrote:Do we have rights to create a new page? You can either:Stravo wrote:Do we have rights to create a new page? I want to do an entry on the Bird of Prey both Romulan and Klingon (Separate entries) and I can't seem to figure out how to create them unless I don't have rights.
- Create a link to a page ("[[Romulan Bird of Prey]]") in an article (you can preview if you don't want the change to be there yet), and then click on the link.
- Search for what you want (with correct capitalization) and get a page that says something to the effect of "this page doesn't exist, you can create it" and click on the link it gives you.
The wiki ignores single returns, but treats double returns as paragraph markers. To insert a single line break, you can use the "<br>" tag:Also on my starship entries I want my first few lines to all look like this:

Registry: NCC-1701

The B-wing article makes me cry.
Might I suggest something drastic? Ban everyone. Have every editor re-apply by submitting an article on a given subject, then filter out the people who don't grasp English. I don't care if I don't get in again, but right now it's embarrassing. Can he just be accidentally banned from both the forum and the Wiki for this?

Doesn't that ruin the whole fucking point of a wiki? It's better to have a web page then, and have people submit articles to an editor. If wiki is going to work people can't run to Mike every time some dumbass comes on. Applying for wiki positions would create a huge burden on the administrative staff too.
I think the point of a wiki is self-policing. Peer pressure works in real life, so let's see what dicks think when their articles are mercilessly edited to oblivion, or even voted for deletion and removed.
To be absolutely blunt, people with dyslexia, high school students who don't know any better and people who have never read an encyclopedia article in their life have no business writing anything at all. Random cocksucking has no place in the wiki either, as all articles should be written in a critical point of view. Yes, that's right, that means mentioning a specific user on SDN and saying he's god's gift to Earth has no place in the wiki.
And can people please keep on topic. I was expecting a blasting of that salamander episode when I typed in evolution, not a poorly written article with mistakes. At the very least it should be related to Star Trek or Star Wars in some way, shape or form. When I key in USSR I am expecting a comparison between the USSR and the Federation, or a mention of the USSR still alive in the Federation.
