Latest Terminator Novel

Post by NecronLord »

I picked this one up today. By Aaron Allston. I expected suckyness from the author of the X-wing books. And Lo! He thrust back the hood, revealing a truly bad take on the Terminator franchise.

A T-800 can now take a .50 cal shot.

To the face.

The eye in fact.

From a barret M99.

At one kilometer.

And only loose the eye, and control of its vehicle for a moment.

....

And ther resistance don't appear to have plasma weapons. I can safely say they're fucked.

And I'm only on page forty.

Jesus fucking christ. I've never read any of the X-Wing novels, but from what I've heard about those and the Terminator book, it makes me wonder why he was even allowed to pick up a pencil.

Woah there big fella. There's no strict canon policy, apart from James Cameron saying he finds the Sterling books closer to his own ideas than T3.

I've still got The Krytos Trap, probably got 20 pages done and that's it.

It's likely no one will top Stirling for these Terminator novels. His trilogy was so good, it should have been the third film.

Yeah, but I think it's safe to say that Cameron's original films along with Gale Anne Hurd were the major assets in the series.

I know.
So why did you consider him the author of the X-Wing books, when there were in fact two? Furthermore, why did you embrace The Bacta war as an example of said books when it has nothing to do with the quality of Allston's writing?

I smell sloppy thinking on the level of Stofsk previous rant on the X-Wing books.

Because every reveiw I've ever read of the X-wing/Wraith squadron series says that he makes Stackpole look like Shakespere..

Then you must have read very wrong reviews. Allston trumps Stackpole on every level. Every. Level. Until now, I've never heard anyone contradicting this.

Good thing Allston didn't write Bacta War.

And, for the record, I also had a go at Iron Fist too. I don't own a copy of that though.

Back to the topic. Are you guys telling me that having a terminator survive having a fifty cal round blow a hole in its head and come out the back of its skull is anything but appalling?

Or the lack of resistance plasma weapons in 2029?

Apparently, that doesn't matter, given the chance to bitch.

To read Iron Fist as a standalone is useless - you're not gonna know anything about the characters or care about them. Start with Wraith Squadron. And give it a fucking chance before you go "I told you so".

Yes. Why would the Terminator's motivation circuits rest solely in its skull? Why would every member of the Resistance own plasma weapons in 2029?

Have you seen the T2 special edition?

Why would every member of the Resistance own plasma weapons in 2029?

We see that their brains are in their skulls in the extended version of T2.

If Allston was a good writer, Iron Fist would be okay as a stand alone. It would be better having read the previous ones, but it shouldn't be essential. That isn't an excuse for the book sucking.

Indeed. The first Star Wars book I read, Dark Force Rising, wasn't the first in its series. I still enjoyed it.

Particularly in light of both T1 and T2 showing flash forward scenes to the same year where every resistance soldier has a plasgun. on them bar one (excluding the likes of radio operations) - because he's the guy with the rocket launcher.

I have the habit of starting a good series with the second or third book, liking it, and finally finding the first book half a year latter.
