The End Is Nigh! Gimme Shelter -VaultTec for the Real World?

Post by Broomstick »

Was reading about people worried about various doomsday scenarios - earthquakes, tsunamis, nuclear problems, supervolcanos, falling asteroids, etc. - and came across Vivos Underground Shelters. They've got some ambitious ideas, although stocked "only" for one year - think the Fallout VaultTec Shelters were 99 or 100, right?

I confess to mixed feelings about this - it would still be restricted to a relatively elite group. Granted, not some super-wealthy or political types, but still, this would represent a significant outlay of resources for many. You have to have a certain level of wealth to get in. Well, that's the brutal way of the world - those who have the most resources are most likely to do well.

Can't help but think that if all hell DOES break loose not everyone who bought into the program will be able to get to their shelter. Sucks to be them, huh? More for those remaining, I suppose.

On the other hand, it IS an interesting intellectual challenge to design such an "ark".

Naturally, these didn't start this project last week, but you always hear more about this sort of thing after a major catastrophe.

What do ya'll think about these sorts of enterprises?

Given that they just have to build and minimally maintain it, sure - or just build is and let the new owners worry about maintaining it (even better).

And if it doesn't perform as advertised? Well... the complaint office is destroyed closed until further notice....

(Sorry, my cynical side is showing)

The comment the Other Half had was "what do you do when the people angry at you for not opening the doors and sharing pour 10 or 20 feet of concrete over the doors?" Hmm... might also apply to lava flows from Supervolcanos....

If they actually have the time and means to do that, they why aren't they doing something more productive to save themselves? :)

I got a chuckle when I saw the site you linked had a Prophecy section. Difficult to take such a company seriously.

Addendum:

In a related idea, have you ever seen The Silohome? That actually has a certain amount of appeal, but not because of its hardening against nearby missile strikes.

The Silohome looks great if only because
A. That's a great rec-room/underground doom fortress
B. It contains most everything I'd want myself in my own little fantasy house (Not a silo but I'd love a sub-sub basement
C. It's uncommon, very uncommon

Ok, after looking over The Silohome, I have to say I too am very entranced by the idea. I have seen many old silo bases attempted to be turned into houses and such, but this seems the first "professionally" done version. Looking at the interiors they are VERY well done, and even have what looks like "day windows" IE false windows that give off light according to the light outside. (which is a handy feature for underground living). What I would like to see are some photos of the unfinished silo area. I mean, according to the site, there is over 20,000, square feet of living space in the silo alone. You could easily make a self contained 'home' on each floor of that thing and rent them out as condos or something. If you had the money imagine what you could do with that space!

You know how we had that "If you won the lottery" thing a while back? Well we should all pledge that whoever wins it big, should buy this place as a SD.net "clubhouse" I mean really how awesome is it?

If we really got serious about that then we could probably save a lot of cash by doing most of the work ourselves. We do after all have at least two prominent members with extensive experience in the building trade.

We'll have the best damn floors ever! and, um...

But yeah, that silohome looks very well done, unlike some other underground "survival shelters" I've seen. I mean that's not even billed as a shelter, it's billed as an ultra-cool unique house.

I mean there was this one idea involving putting school buses and cargo containers underground and linking them... ugh.

On a budget it looks like a decent shelter but it's no Vault but it's an excellent amateur attempt.

With crown molding if possible, it really is any easy way to give simple rooms a lot of charm.. Personally though I am a sucker for wood paneling, but it is a bitch to maintain in damp weather.

I was thinking scam or viral marketing for some movie or game. The whole site's just too over-the-top for me to take it with any seriousness.

Do oyu mean the site in the OP? Or the silohome?
I am guessing the one in the OP, in which I will deeply agree. It smacks of something from a "2012" movie, the fact it has prophecy' stuff and every conceivable disaster on it and just the LOOK of it screams fake or scam to some degree.

But I think for the most part we all know that, Im more interested in the best ways to use the Silo-house as SD.nets "Secret Hideout"

Think it would be an interesting project to design an SD.net secret hideout... and since I'm learning Sketch-up and Rhino that might be an interesting project for me.

Um.... what do we need?

1) Sleeping/personal accommodations - single, double... um... do we have any triads or other group mating arrangements to be accommodated as well? Family units as well, given that quite a few of SD.net have kids.

2) Storage. Lots and lots of storage, especially as I don't think Q will show up with the Boti Shed.

3) Kitchen and dining areas

4) Living/recreation areas. (Big screen TVs, extensive DvD and audio collections, and kick-ass gaming facilities are a given, of course)

5) Workshops.

6) Medical facilities (accidents, hangovers, etc.)

7) Transportation facilities (Air, ground, boat)

Did I leave anything out? Suggestions? Do we want hydroponics? Survivalist gear? (Maybe for camping if the apocalypse doesn't arrive.) Anyone want to help?

Armoury. Just in cse the apocalypse is a zombie one or some Trektard board decides to try a real invasion.

And some sort of gym should be included in the recreation section methinks. We'd need to keep fit after all.

I would also recommend an extensive library, for those bibliophiles amongst us. Including, of course, the entirety of the book series of SW, ST, Doctor Who, Stargate, B5, and any other sci-fi series you want. Giant comic-book section is also vital.

If power and maintenance is not an issue, i would recommend an extensive electronic library. It certainly takes much less physical space and can be shared amongst several people.
That doesn't preclude the existence of physical books, of course.

Electronic Library is far more efficient, although I am sure many of us prefer good books when it comes to reading. I would vote for a mix on books, but I don't seen any need for wasting space on DVD's or other discs. All movies/Tv shows can easily be kept on external hard drives. Want to borrow a show? Just copy it to a thumb drive for your personal view pleasure.

Although the idea of a SD.Net planned bunker raises a question. Should we use a prexisting base for our modle? Perhaps a Titan-II (the largest underground facility ever built) or go fully off the map and design a facility from scratch?

If we choose the later, the topic of where to build comes into play as well as what type of layout. Built into a mountain? Or just underground? Etc. Also a well defined "mission statment" should be in place, the more that is defined, the more we know exactly what sort of facility to shape. Is this to be a true 'survive WWIII' type thing? or mearly an awesome underground fort for SD.Net?

If we designed it well enough, is there any reason why it can't be both?

Also, perhaps this Sd.net bunker idea whould be split into a separate thread.

I agree - let's start a separate bunker thread. If there isn't one by the time I get back I'll start one, but if someone else what's to begin feel free.
