OK, FASTA gets more cash. :D

And now I have a question. How many tanks and aircraft can a country of my size produce yearly? I found information that a single Russian factory was able to produce 800 T-90 tanks a year. So how many can I make a year? What will the moderator allow me to do? Marina?

Also: You want to place the space program in San Dorado, with all the block wars and other problems that place has? Then I guess we will have to have a large armed presence in the area to guard our stuff

The block wars happen in the ghettos. There are 'sanitized' areas that will suit our purposes well.

The San Dorado bicycle Judge Dredd police will suppress dissent quite handily.

Oh, and PeZook, when we do get FASTA cranking in San Dorado, please be sure to make some rockets explode. :)

There's a chunk of Untamed Forest on the northern coast of Frequesne-- why don't we set up a French Guyana-style space launch facility there? We can make a deal with the FTO... they might like the trade, after all. We'll bring high-tech industry to the area, eh?

BTW, I am making an OOB for al-Akharabat, to be posted soon.

EDIT: it is poste din the OOB thread; and also posted here for Moderator approval:

al-Akharabat:

Al-Akharabat occupies a strip of land along the western coast of the Velerian continent.

Once a relatively peaceful land of scattered tribes and villages, the region was brought together into a large country by a former colonial power that has long since faded into obscurity. The larger population to the north-- the dark-skinned Katangwa tribe-- was made subservient to the slightly lighter-skinned Caravo tribe that was dominant to the south. This was, of course, done on purpose by the former colonial masters to keep the locals divided.

After colonialism ended (post Second War of the World), the region descended into anarchy and chaos, and became a kleptocracy of various competing warlords. Drugs and modern slavery were the primary sources of income, and even though there was rumored to be oil, natural gas, and other minerals in the area, it was too volatile for most companies to risk trying to exploit.

For a few years, there was an attempt to form a sort of "warlord coalition" government, from which emerged an almost functioning democracy, albeit one full of heavily-armed, nervous, backstabbing factions of near-equal power. For six years this tense balace was kept, until the Caravo warlords staged a coup and rigged an election making Mohamet Farih Addeed the President of all al-Akharabat.

Overseas, a former Army captain in the old government, named Johan S'vimbi, was studying law in the nation of Khitan, and upon news of the coup he returned to his native northern village of al-Khalid, the "second capitol" and major port city, to much fanfare, where he vowed to fight for the freedom of his land and people. He made himself a Colonel in the Al-Akharabat Liberation Front (ALF) and vowed not to rest until he had restored democracy to his land.

The civil war has dragged on for 15+ years, and the only thing these two men agreed on was to bring in outside mediators. They were willing to work with Canissia, and there was talk about this for some time before Japanistan came onto the continent, but Japanistan's sudden re-claiming of the mine area lit a fire under Canissia's military to move before they got shut out.

Now, Canissia and Japanistan are "working together" to solve the humanitarian problem and bring stability. Canissia welcomes any interested parties who have the al-Akharabati interests at heart.

===============================================

SOUTHERN POWER BASE:
President (for Life): Farih Addeed
Chief General: Kimba Mtambo
Hordes of Caravo thugs and warlord horde militia with "technicals"; insane, drugged-up fighting spirit.

CITIES WORTH NOTE:
Kivangali, nominal capitol of al-Akharabat and the largest, most developed city.
45,000 people live in squalid conditions, except for the Presidential Quarter, which has electricity and running water for about 12 hours at a time.
Jasser: Coastal city, once the warehouse and "factory" district for colonial sweatshop textiles.

ECONOMY:
Relatively organized mafia kleptocracy reaping in money from drugs, smuggling, slave rackets, and piracy. They make a lot more money from their crime networks than the ALF will ever have, but they tend to spend money foolishly (a Presidential Palace, Mercedes cars, imported luxuries) and their fighting forces are undisciplined and are as interested in competing against each other for influence as they are in fighting the ALF. They are ferocious, insane fighters, rumored to get drugged up on a chewed weed called khat before going into battle.

The Central Bank is located in Kivangali. It is now held by Addeed's men, mostly because they use the vault to store their swag. The currency, known as the "Bwhat", hasn't been printed for over six years, so the ones that still circulate are faded and yellow with age and use (and for mashing khat leaves). The Bwhat has buying power in Kivangali primarily because President Addeed says so, and forces its use.

OOB:
12 Caravo Militias worth mentioning
Unknown thousands of disorganized warlord horde type fighters, throughout tribal areas.

Uniforms:
Street clothes, tribal civilian clothes, some old leftover Army jackets with shiny pins for the "commander".

Smallarms:
AK-47 variants
RPK/PKM light machineguns
DshK heavy machineguns
RPG-7
Hand Grenades

"Armor":
Off-road motorcycles
Toyata HiLux pickup trucks
various old commercial trucks
A handful of old D-7 Bulldozers with tons of armor plates, sandbags, plywood armor.

Mounted weapons:
Various Recoilless rifles
A handful of AGS-17 automatic grenade launchers

===============================================

NORTHERN POWER BASE:
Colonel Johan S'vimbi
Al-Akharabati Liberation Front (ALF)
Vaguely-formed military structure trying to appear "professional". Some trucks & laughable light armor.

CITIES WORTH NOTE:
Khalid, the "second capitol" and biggest Katangwa city, with 20,000 people. Also al-Akharabat's only real seaport worth mention.

ECONOMY:
The Katangwas are, as a people, poor beyond comprehension. Their economy is barter, based on tribal and village trade. The southern currency, the "Bwhat", is laughingly referred to as "banana peel" due to its yellowed color and because it has no real value in the north. The tribal economy, however, does see to the adequate distribution of basic grown foods, and amenities such as baskets, clothing, and other basic needs. Many people live on subsistance farming, in particular the soldiers.

OOB:
14 "Battalions" of ALF soldiers-- semi-organized bands of tribal warriors, organized by village. Each "Battalion" has anywhere from 100 to 600 men in it.

Uniforms:
A variety of uniforms from all over the world, frequently mismatched and sometimes accessorized with civilian gear like sneakers, sunglasses, and T-shirts of once-popular rock bands from other countries.

Smallarms:
AK-47 variants
RPK/PKM light machineguns
DshK heavy machineguns
RPG-7
Hand Grenades
"Guards Battalion" has a few MP-5s and L1A1s, but mostly AK-47s.

"Armor":
Off-road motorcycles
Civilian Land Rovers and Jeeps, some with machinegun pintles
Surplus Unimog trucks
8 ASU-57 airborne assault guns
2 ZSU-57/2 anti-aircraft vehicles

Mounted weapons:
Various Recoilless rifles
A handful of AGS-17 automatic grenade launchers

Johan S'Vimbi is respected by the Katangwa. He is clean, eloquent, and well-educated, with a Masters in Literature. He was working on his Law dissertation in Khitan when he abandoned his studies to come home. He tells people he has a Ph.D in Law, which he does not, but his former Professors admit that of what they've seen of his potential, he would probably get his Ph.D if he actually stayed to finish his dissertation.

S'vimbi tries to present a "civilized" face to the rest of the world, by wearing a clean uniform and providing gear for his men as much as he can. But the Katangwas social order is still very tribal, and "supply" and "logistics" is handled by individual villages and clans giving extra supplies to his men. His "army" is mostly militia, with a small hard-core band of roving men he refers to as his "Guards Battalion" (actually about 150 men). They have old Army trucks and gear from the former colonial army. The bulk of the old Army was made up of Katangwas, while Caravos made up the Officer corps.

The ALF has picked up on army-like ideas like uniforms, cleaning things, and marching and standing in formations. Their fighting spirit is that of a relaxed tribal group, however, and some are begining to wonder why they care about marching on the capitol to retake the government when they don't really care about those Caravo bastards much to begin with.

------------------------------------------

TYPICAL COMBAT:
Addeed's militias will "initiate" combat most of th etime by getting stoned on khat while listening to aggressive rock-and-roll on battered old ghetto blasters. They'll raid into Katangwan territory, pillage a small village, loot and rape, and then take off when S'vimbi's men appear on the horizon.

What few pitched battles there are are frequently inconclusive: the Caravo militias are frequently stoned and highly aggressive, and some keep fighting even after being hit several times before they drop dead. The Katangwa forces are disciplined enough to defend themselves and repel a Caravo attack, but the Katangwans themselves are not so aggressive and generally do not exploit any gains they make against the Caravos, typically letting the Caravos break and run away rather than pursue them.

The Katangwans have a fairly defensive mindset, and are rarely motivated to assault Caravo territory. On the rare occassion that they do organize for a major raid, it can be pretty well-done as long as S'vimbi himself organizes and leads the raid. He uses his "armor" for fast shock attacks, and then gets them out of the fight zone before RPGs can be brought to bear against them.

Just for the record Astaria has always considered Velaria, especially the southern part, as their Zone of Influence. This has in the past resulted in sales of military hardware, and lending "advisers" to whatever warlord was filling to play along with them.

I am trying to work out a post here, but things are happening so fast that it's hard for me to do so. I just thought I'd remind y'all that Astaria is out there and given that they have several ports and airports in the big white territory right next to the fighting... well...

Hrm. I'd been referring to the capital as Jasser before now. But that's all good.

I recommend clearing out a space on San Dorado's latitude in the Untame Wilderness, thus allowing a(edit:n FTO) launchpad for future operations, and providing FASTA with a viable Equatorial Launch Pad.

In similar Words:

Reasonably high-tech industry exists in the People's Republic in the south; they have an approximately 1960s/70s level of technology. But even they haven't poked their fingers into the northern jungle.

Oh, and he also has the love and adoration of the locals since he's giving them booze and weed and pornography.

When the whole mess (haha) is sorted out, and the MESS gets things rolling, I guess we can also expand our presence. We won't have slave camps or anything inhuman, but it's a third world shithole. It's not gonna be happy fun place, unless years and years are invested in it, but it will do - and I think that the locals will be better off than they were before.

Unless stuff starts exploding.
Well Indhopal keeps a very close eye on Shroomania. My President is really just playing to the base that likes to see the former colonial master have a hard time.

If I may....

I was operating under the impression that we already have a mostly modern, capable satellite system in orbit. GPS, weather sats, comm stats, mil sats, etc. As far as I know the only thing not permitted from the start was nuclear weapons. It doesn't make sense for the other satellites to have not been developed IMHO.

But I've gotten the impression from some posts and IMs that some sat systems aren't around, or the players at least don't think they are.

One of the primary drivers for the space program was ICBMs. They have since gone onto different tracks of development, but that and the national prestige of going to the moon were the drivers.

They aren't. We're basically starting with the same rules as the other game.

So, no satellite constellations.

You know Yenchin; I could have legimitately declared war on the MESS for the seizure of my AGIs, since they're naval auxilaries -- in fact, when I told Marina about this; she said:

That's an act of motherfucking war

And then proceeded to attack your CVBGs with everything I had, turning your exercise into a bloodsoaked one. Not to mention staging a major land invasion of the Old Dominion.

Predictably of course, with a major war breaking out between the MESS and Shepistan; the fighting would have QUICKLY spread to Japanistan/Cascadia, and we'd all be in World War 3.
