Four orders by the Egyptian sultanate. Do you wish to have them built in your shipyards under German supervision or do you want Germany to built them for you?

Note that we have not yet figured out how to have the economy functioning, so we may have to revisit this deal once they are completed.

I was assuming at least the first two or so would have been finished before the start of the game myself -- they're supposed to be the top of the line battleship for my navy.

Anyway, I intend to buy most of my biggest ships abroad, so I'm fine with them being German-built in their entirety; my own shipyards are probably limited to building things like destroyer leaders, monitors and the occasional battlecruiser. I'm mostly a continental power, no need for huge battleship wharves.

Expect about 3 of those to be built in total, with one complete at the beginning of the game, one nearing completion (6-12 months until ready for active service) and one on the stocks. The predreadnoughts would be harbour defense ships or scrapped with their guns transferred to coastal artillery, and three of the italian dreadnoughts still in existance in original configuration.

I'll think about cruisers, destroyers, MTBs and submarines later.

How are we defining capital ships in this game? Is it gun size, number of guns, tonnage or a sort of holistic approach to deciding what is and isn't a capital ship.
School requires more work than I remember it taking...

That ship is seriously underarmored. I mean, 8 inch armor only? And only a 4 inch armored deck?

The Medicis are to be cornerstones of cruiser flotillas, so more supercruisers than battleships - definitely not designed to slug it out with battleships, but run from anything with guns bigger than 12''-13''. It fits into the Italian navy's (foolish) favouring speed and guns over protection. If it meets e.g. a G3, she's most likely dead - but my constructors don't know its parameters...
I may delete one turret to increase protection, but as I see my nation, I can't build/afford anything like enough true battleships to protect my colonies and the homeland - so I have to look for and invest in alternatives. Maybe successive units will be bigger, slower, more heavily armed but better protected. It's what you get when you try to build a vessel similar to Dunkerque 10 years earlier.

Thanas, is it just me, or did you forget to superfire the mounts for the main battery? Also, I have a few questions regarding your deck armor layout; namely, why you considered it necessary to armor the forecastle and quarterdeck almost as thickly as the vitals, and also why you chose to limit the horizontal protection over the vitals to a "box over magazine and engines" arrangement rather than using a continuous armored deck (i know this is a export design, but still...).

No, I did not forget to superfire them. Deliberate design choice not to have them superfiring, ship is optimized for broadside firing.

As for the forecastle and quarterdeck, what would you chose to have available?

As for the box over magazine and engines, I thought this was the armored box concept? Or am I massively mistaken in it?

If an 8" belt and 4" of deck armor is considered inadequate, then that doesn't really bode well for my proposed Libertad class, which isn't much better in that regard (9" main belt, 6" ends and upper, 9" torpedo bulkhead, 3" deck). Oh well.

The "armored box" concept refers to the entire main armored citadel surrounding the vital areas of the ship's hull, including the belts, transverse closing bulkheads, and one or more armored decks. The so-called "box over machinery and magazines" configuration in SS means specifically limiting deck armor to nothing more than the magazines and machinery and leaving other areas open to plunging fire, rather than extending the armored deck over the entire length of the main belts and the beam between them. While this allows those components to be exceptionally well protected for a given weight, it's probably not a good idea for capital ships, because you'll want to keep plunging shells out of the underwater spaces altogether, as even if they don't damage the engines and magazines, they can still do very bad things™ to the ship's watertight integrity. Still, even full armored decks were often thicker over the magazines than other areas.

BTW, during the last few minutes I threw together a my own take of a "Super Bayern" armed with 16-inch guns while remaining under 30,000 tons that still colesly follows the original pattern, based on a meticulous replica I made of the real Bayern a while back (I replicated numerous real ships in SS to serve as references for my own), if you're interested in seeing it.
I am curious. Could one do away with belt and ends armor?
Well, you could also go to an "all or nothing" scheme. While eliminating the main belt entirely probably isn't a good idea, battlecruisers with thinner belts (enough to keep out say, 8" cruiser guns) should still be quite viable provided they're very fast, and that they retain adequate deck armor to tackle long-range plunging fire.

Looking at this thread I know I'm gong to have to let others design my fleet as I'm not familiar with battleships and the like beyond the most basic level. Alternatively I could also go with historically designs which gives me the added benefit of being able to find pictures for the ships.

Now that we've gotten to the 4th page, I'm starting that think that while all these big dreadnought designs are nice and everything, I think it'd be great if we could see some smaller ships as well. Navies don't subside on capital ships alone 8). I'll post a light cruiser and destroyer or two tomorrow, but right now I need to go to bed.

Trying to make a cruiser is painful. Cruiser designs in this era, specifically 1900-1920, are primarily ones that were quickly outdated and turned into battlecruiser target practice. The entire concept of the cruiser was heavily in flux.

Alright this is one of my newest battleships, the Sao Paulo class from 1921, it's the first Brazilian battleship (aside from my battlecruiser and export battleship) that goes all out All or Nothing armour. Comments would be appreciated.

I just noticed SpringSharp can get weird. I loaded Olympia and despite her report coming out as 1.00 Composite when I generated it, upon loading it was at .99. :wtf:
