What terrible films do you love/enjoy?
Quite a broad-ranging subject, this one. Basically, what terrible films do you love, even though you know they suck? It can be anything from deliberately bad films like some grindhouse flicks, to poorly conceived and poorly made toilet. It can be loved for any reason - maybe it has one incredible scene or moment in it amongst all the crap ones, maybe it's endlessly quotable, maybe it's just so much damn fun that you forgive its massive shortcomings. Maybe it's a simple case of being so bad it's good.
Some of mine:
- Pacific Rim. I know full well this is a terrible, terrible film. A script that could've been written by a 6 year old. Horrendously cliched and even offensive characters. A story that makes as much sense as my dog's eternal battle with the vacuum cleaner. And yet as discussed on this board before, I find it so brainlessly enjoyable I'll happily sit down to watch it if it's on, or at the very least skip to the fight scenes which are incredibe to see.
- Independence Day. First time I saw it a good 12 years ago, it immediately became my favourite film (I was . An absolute blast, and I still love the nuke scene. Even today I have a great fondness for it, appalling though it may be, for very similiar reasons to Pacific Rim.

Those original movies from SF. You know, megashark and giant piranhas and what not. You can't beat that.
It has become clear to me in the previous days that any attempts at reconciliation and explanation with the community here has failed. I have tried my best. I really have. I pored my heart out trying. But it was all for nothing.

Pacific Rim was amazing, and fuck anyone that says otherwise.
On the other hand, Six String Samurai could legitimately be called terrible (90s post apocalyptic film), but the sheer comedy value made it enjoyable enough that I simply didn't care.

The Final Countdown has the worst pacing problem ever. The audience knows ten minutes into the movie that they went back in time, but an hour in they're still debating it and largely in denial. Which is admittedly realistic for people inadvertently flung through time.
Mother, Juggs and Speed is a major nostalgic film for me, but boy does it have problems. Then again, it has Bill Cosby as a lovable maniac, so maybe it all evens out.

'The Final Countdown' was awesome. Well, technically it wasn't because it's true, as a movie it was something of a letdown, but it was awesome for showing what happens (or was about to happen) when you put a 1980s era CVN up against the WW2 era IJN.
'Street Fighter'. That movie is so incredibly bad it's good (or at least entertaining) again. Unless 'so bad it's good again' entries aren't allowed?

Re: What terrible films do you love/enjoy?
"So bad it's good" is a FUCKING STUPID descriptor, because it describes nothing. "So bad, it provides endless opportunities to laugh at how bad it is, and the movie is good entertainment for that reason," is an acceptable one, because a reason is provided. A cliché should make sense to the average person, before it becomes popular enough to become a cliché; if you simply shout, "so bad it's good," the way characters in 1984 shout, "freedom is slavery," you're just being a troll.Batman wrote:'Street Fighter'. That movie is so incredibly bad it's good (or at least entertaining) again. Unless 'so bad it's good again' entries aren't allowed?
Please do not make Americans fight giant monsters.
Those gun nuts do not understand the meaning of "overkill," and will simply use weapon after weapon of mass destruction (WMD) until the monster is dead, or until they run out of weapons.
They have more WMD than there are monsters for us to fight. (More insanity here.)

I appreciate pedantry as much as the next guy, but why do you think people use "so bad it's good" except as shorthand for "So bad, it provides endless opportunities to laugh at how bad it is, and the movie is good entertainment for that reason?"

Because it uses and confuses the metric of good/bad film and good/bad entertainment. There's a big difference.Esquire wrote:I appreciate pedantry as much as the next guy, but why do you think people use "so bad it's good" except as shorthand for "So bad, it provides endless opportunities to laugh at how bad it is, and the movie is good entertainment for that reason?"

Re: What terrible films do you love/enjoy?
Not sure I follow - my claim is that "so bad it's good" is a shortened version of the alternative Sidewinder gave, and a fairly intuitive one. I didn't need to have it explained in a particularly painstaking manner, I don't think, and everybody I talk to about movies agrees on what the phrase means. All that being true (and it may not be), what's being confused?

I loved Pacific Rim, of course. But a totally under-rated movie was The 13th Warrior with Antonio Banderas. Also on my list, Zorro : The Gay Blade.

Waterworld.
Yes, I stand by that notion. A great movie regarded as terrible for no good reason.

A minute's thought suggests that the very idea of this is stupid. A more detailed examination raises the possibility that it might be an answer to the question "how could the Germans win the war after the US gets involved?" - Captain Seafort, in a thread proposing a 1942 'D-Day' in Quiberon Bay

No Retreat No surrender. What's not to love? An early appearance by the Muscles from Brussels, only Van Damme played a Russian fighter. Kurt McKinney was in an early phase of his acting career and just over acted. But it was hell awesome.

ATM (film).

Bonus points for watching the movie without having read about it before hand. I suspected from the title that something like this was going to happen, but I didn't know how gloriously cheesy it would get.

I also like it for the F-14 porn. It's also kind of cool to see the US Navy from that era.Batman wrote:'The Final Countdown' was awesome. Does Equilibrium count? Rated 37% on Rotten Tomatoes, though I just found that 82% of the RT members who voted liked it.
Whatever. I liked it.

Yeah that's bullshit, Equilibrium is a genuinely decent film. Starcrash, on the other hand, is an awful film but strangely entertaining.Haruko wrote:Does Equilibrium count? Rated 37% on Rotten Tomatoes

Trashy sci-fi - mentions so far for waterworld, equilibrium and independence day, but no love for armageddon?

The Adventures of Pluto Nash. It almost reminds me of a Sinatra movie, only sci-fi. And Eddie Murphy makes a surprisingly good straight-man.

The underworld movies. First movie is really good, second and following less so in terms of story, but I just really like the visual design and style of the movies.

Re: What terrible films do you love/enjoy?
I forgot about the Final Countdown, that was a fun flick. Too bad they ran out of money on the way to stopping the Pearl Harbor attack. Pacific Rim and The 13th Warrior are also firm favorites.
Godzilla vs. Hedorah (The Smog Monster). Yes, Godzilla flies, yes the military is nearly nowhere to be found, and yes the cartoons included are real trips. But the film has the biggest message to sell since the original 1954 Godzilla, and Hedorah is so creepy and the tone so dark that the film sucks you in anyway. Lotsa people get maimed and killed here, and in very messy ways. It’s an amazing mix of horror and camp, a 70’s Japanese SyFy.
The Last Samurai. Historical fantasy fiction where the samurai ideals are touted without a hint to their reality, like celebrating old south plantation life while completely ignoring slavery. Everyone I talk to stays away from it just because Tom Cruise is in it. But I think the Japanese actors, costumes, sets, and overall production are terrific, and Watanabe as Katsumoto deserved an Oscar, delivering a performance that Cruise’s presence can’t diminish. Come to think of it, I think I liked 47 Ronin for the same reasons.
Creature. The 1985 Alien clone that tries so hard. Zombie crewmen, Klaus Kinski, face-ripping, exploding heads, and recycled spacesuits from 2001. It steals directly from The Thing From Another World in a nice homage, too. It’s nice to see it’s a Netflix staple.
The Green Slime. An American production with Italian funding, Italian and American actors, and Japanese special effects/direction. This is how Armageddon wouldn’t have sucked so much if it was shorter. Then the loony monsters show and it gets crazier. I love this film.
Night of the Lepus. Giant Killer Rabbits. And Dr. McCoy. ‘Nuff said.

I'll second those. It doesn't hurt that Kate Beckinsale looks damn hot as a vampire in that black outfit.Thanas wrote:The underworld movies. First movie is really good, second and following less so in terms of story, but I just really like the visual design and style of the movies.
I also like the Resident Evil movies. I've barely play the first game, and the movies aren't all that great but I enjoy them anyway.
