Just out of curiousity, does anyone else get tired of watching assholes throw cigarette butts out of their cars and onto the ground? Do they think that somehow butts don't qualify as litter?
Hey everyone, STOP THROWING YOUR NASTY ASS BUTTS ONTO THE ROADS! Jesus Christ, smoking doesn't entitle you to litter the streets with the leftovers from your bad habit... It really seems like it's a case of butts somehow not being litter in their nicotine-exposed minds. Why the fuck is this? STOP DOING THAT!!!!! Take the goddamned change out of your car's ash tray and use it for what it's meant to be used for! Oh, you don't do that because it smells up your car? Oh ok, then fine, just trash the goddamned roads and sidewalks and make everyone have to see curbs and dirt walkways full of butts.... No really, we don't fucking mind!!!! JUST KEEP TOSSING THEM ON THE FUCKING GROUND, YOU ASSHOLES!
And by the way, anyone ever see cops write tickets for that? I've seen it twice, which was hilarious (I pointed and laughed), but that's NOT NEARLY ENOUGH! GODDAMMIT, start writing those assholes up and hit them with that 10,000 dollar fine we keep seeing those signs threaten us with for littering on every damn freeway! Jesus fucking christ... damn butt throwers...

They all say that they don't do it, too. It's never the smoker you're talking to who litters, always the other smoker.

I know! It's the 'no true Scottsman,' or in this case, the 'no true butt thrower fallacy.' Nevermind the fact that I just saw the asshole do it at the intersection in front ot me, it was another smoker!

We're warned about throwing butts from cars when near wooded areas. People still do it though, in regions where bushfires are a big risk every summer.
I figure the odds of a single butt causing an actual bushfire aren't that good. But when you look at the condition here every summer*, it passes inconsiderate, into downright potential arson.
*Hot and dry weather most days.

Hate to tell you this, but they're better than you think. My dad fought many a fire started like that.

The fact that no smoker ever fesses up to throwing butts out of his car window even though the roadside is littered with millions of them is one of the most annoying things about the breed. But let's face it, smoking is a moron/asshole activity anyway, so you're not going to get the best class of people represented in that group.

They do but only when OTHER people do it.

A mind on nicotine is not a rational one to begin with.

I like that a lot better than citing me for doing 5 over out on the interstate.

Have been tired of it for a long time now -- am pretty much numbed to it now, unless someone barely misses hitting me while I'm on my motorcycle, in which case I'm tempted to provide their door with a nice boot-sized dent.

Reminds me of a story I heard of when my mother went on a rant similar to yours Superman. Standing behind her, without her knowing it, were two of my brother's friends who smoked. About halfway through the rant both of them sneaked outside, so intimidated by my mother, and picked up every butt they could see and threw it in the trash.
I think most people feel similar to how you do when it comes to smokers in general. Some of them are alright, they realize that it's a dirty habit and take care to not cause litter or smoke in places where they know people will be made uncomfortable by them (Though this isn't much of a problem since New York State made smoking in public areas illegal). The rest of smokers though, assholes. They don't seem to understand at all that smoking smells and tastes like ass and people don't want to be in an area that is going to be filled with smoke. And as far as they're conserned they are so full of their self-importance that the non-smokers can go somewhere else. I hate asshole smokers.

A couple of months ago there was a Daily Show episode where one of the correspondents (Ed Helms?) did a little section on how the civil rights struggle may have been won, but there is still a persecuted group out there: smokers. It was wonderful.

I live in a smoke-free apartment complex. Despite that, there are still people who live here or visit here who toss their expended butts all over the parking lot.
Also, there are ashtrays near each gate of the swimming pool here, right next to the clearly visible sign that states no smoking is allowed in the pool area. Even so, over this past weekend there were still people sitting at the poolside tables smoking. Never mind the other adults who were trying to enjoy the pool without the stink of the cigarette smoke wafting all over the place, there are young children there who shouldn't have to have that around.
Damn arrogant smokers...

Especially in the Army, in regards to teh OP and this post.
Because I've had to pick up more than a couple (hundred) cigarette butts in Korea and because it's an activity which actively contributes to poor endurance.
AND the fact that smokers get a good hour off work with all of their "smoke breaks."
That's quite a list
1) idiots and assholes for
thinking nothing of littering, each probably myopically applying only HIS (or HER) effect on the environment
2)
causing other people to have to clean up their mess, too often me
3)
actively degrading their health, in the Army, esp. their ability to run; there ARE standards and their lifestyle is getting in the way of job performance
4)
bullshiting during the job
(last edit) 5)
2nd hand smoke
Smokers don't necessarily
have to follow any of these rules but the 3rd, but the majority contribute to most of those.
edit: setting off the smoke alarms in Army barrack's, a uniquely Military annoyance about smokers when you factor in the fact that the chain-of-command will then threaten to start a fire gaurd roster wasting everyone's time because the alarms are for all intents and purposes, pracitaclly useless. Why? Because the fire department HAS TO RESPOND TO THESE ALAMRS GOING OFF and threatens to turn off the alarms since they're demonstrably useless and are wasting manpower, time and resources. Hence the gaurd. Shit piles up doesn't it?

Alright, I'll speak up on this one.
I am a smoker. In fact, I have been for about ten years now. I've flicked my butts out the window during that time twice, and both were during the first year I smoked. I've never done it since, as I happen to have an ashtray in my car.
Lest anyone bust out with statistics or something, yes, I always use my turn signal. However, I nearly always drive the speed limit or 5 mph above. I also have never been involved in a car collision or moving violation of any sort during my 10 years of driving. My driving record is clean, apart from a single parking ticket - but I don't think that counts.

I was never a fan but the moment I developed a real hatred for it was when one such butt bounced off the visor of my helmet. I can't say for certain it'd have hit me in the eye if I had my visor up, as I usually did, but it damn well pissed me off.

I smoke too.
I typically flick my butts onto the road unless people are near or there is a cop. If i am stopped at a light when the cigarette is done; I will try to discreetly drop it out instead of flick it some distance as usual. This is to avoid attention. I don't care if there are cigarette butts on the road. I don't consider it a big deal. Littering to me is people throwing their Mc Donald's bags and cups onto the road.

Wow. If your intention was to give a supporting argument for the OP, you've succeeded admirably.

You are an apathetic loser. Cigarette butts lead to "Mc Donald's bags and cups onto the road", moron. Try using a fucking ashtray or (shock!) quit smoking! Pick up cigars or pipes; they're much nicer than cigarettes, especially for other people to be around. But you wouldn't care about that, since you've told us all we need to hear about what an inconsiderate douchebag you are.
Have fun getting charbroiled and flash-fried come dawn, assweed.

Sarcasm noted, Rhoenix.
One of my goals was to give the ONLY opinion that opposed the stated pet peeve. I thought my reasoning was adequate; if only to myself.
Einhander,
I empathize with other people as far as smoking in public. I do use the ashtray if I really have to. Its not to avoid littering (which is your main problem with it after all), I use it to avoid being seen litter. I agree flicking my cigarette butts is littering. You have to agree that it is not even as close to bad as the previous McD's example. It does not lead to that extreme; at least not for me. I am not every smoker; I am but one.

So why drop the butts out of the window instead of use the ashtray?

Good question, I forgot to address it.
For one the ash tray is small. It can hold about one pack of cigarettes maximum. Your first thought is to empty it onto the ground. But that would be outrageous to some people. Just like smoking, whatever is immediately convenient. You can dramatically increase the time between ashtray dumps if you don't use it, obviously.
Thats not the real reason, though. You will notice smokers always have their window cracked open. They prefer to "ash" their cigarette out the window as opposed to the ash tray. Naturally, they "put out" their cigarette out the window as opposed to the ash tray.

Why not just empty the tray into a bin on a more regular basis?
Are you lazy and inconsiderate or just an asshole?

The ash tray rarely needs to be emptied. It isn't a problem.
I am lazy, somewhat inconsiderate, and defiantly an asshole.
rhoenix wrote:It seemed as if you put up the argument only because it was the only contrary opinion.
It was defiantly the major reason I even bothered to get into this. However, like I said. I am not speaking in defense for the sake of it. There are reasons for why smokers do what they do. I am not the one with the pet peeve.
You have to draw the conclusion that it is just convenience and habit that we piss you off. There is no malicious intent in it.

An admission of guilt? All of the smokers who do deny it; I'm forced to conclude that this tard doesn't actually do it and just wants to get a reaction from everyone. I won't play into it! I won't! No!
...
OK fine... There are reasons smokers do what they do? Who the fuck cares? You're addicted to them, moron.
Is it hard to understand that I'm pissed off because you litter everywhere? Smoke yourself into cancerous oblivion for all I care; but for fuck's sake, clean up after yourself... I'd love to come over and crap in your shower or piss in your sink, but do you see me doing that?
