Welcoming new ppl in chat... or "Who is theDixen?"

Ok, y'all know I'm new here. Tev has been trying for a *while* to get me to join; I finally broke down and did so...

When I started joining the SDNet chat room *(yes I know it's not an official thingy), EVERY TIME I joined, someone would say "Whois theDixen?" or "Does anybody know this person?" without even waiting long enough to see if I might actully belonged there.

Folks, I realize you've had to deal with drive-bys and bashers and trollers... but is this really the way we want to deal with potential new members? Quite honestly, I was annoyed enough that I don't like to come into the chat unless I know that there's someone there to "smack down" the smartasses for me. (Someday I'll have been a member long enough to squash the people who tick me off!)

Next time you're in SDNet Chat and someone you don't know comes in, why not wait a few minutes to see if anyone greets them as if they know them before presuming they're just there to cause trouble...

LadyJules, aka theDixen

I don't know about others, but when I ask that question it's out of pure curiosity. It's not to make you feel unwelcomed or to flame you or anything. I still do it to people who have been here for years and have been in chat for years, I simply can't remember who is who for everyone and I forget (as every human does at one time or another) who certain people are. It helps if you keep your name in the chat the same as you have it on SDNet here. Example, my name here is Mrs Kendall, my name in chat is mrskendall00. Kinda obvious right ;)

I would say don't take offence to people asking who you are right away unless they start off flaming you, in that case your post here is warranted ;) Have fun and don't stop coming to that chat because of some silly people. Remember a good number of the SdNet population who frequent the chat are just teenagers who are just rude most of the time anyway cause they are bitter about not getting any, they are called the AYVB ;)

No offence to you guys (and you know who you are) but you can be rather rude and unwelcoming sometimes in that chat.

I would just not care, actually. The one time I popped in the chat it took them a minute to ask who I was and another to get annoyed that a board member they hadn't invited was there.

Edit: I should be fair; it was one person having a bad day, but that only means that you should ignore the jerks.

Who was the bloody idiot who got annoyed? I mean, bad day and all that but its a open chat.

Yeah seriously, they had no right to get annoyed that you *a mod of the goddammed site* was in there. It's definatly not by invitation only. Please come by again and give it another try Lag, I'd like to see you in the chat someday :)

Also how long ago was this?

I don't honestly know (the chat name was different from their username, and five months later I haven't a clue what it was), and it's not important. Let the baby have his bottle, I always say. But for other people discouraged in the chat, either ignore the ones that you don't like or go somewhere that everybody knows your name and they're always glad you came.

Oh, come on, we always dogpile on the new person in the AIM chat. rememebr Coolgert? Man, that was fun. I assure, teev's friend, it's all done in good fun, much like Fish Glaive's question about piss shiver.

It's so fun to be a dickhead to anyone new on a chat. I have no idea why you won't call it something like "our private angsty teenagers secret bedroom club" instead of a misleading name like SDNet chat room.

Oh right, because the actions of Bunny, Tycho, superman and occasionally Fish really make the chat a worthless use of time?

How about when anyone in the chat sees a new person, just say "Hello. Who are you?" Now is that so hard?

That's what I'm saying. But I'm also saying don't get turned away by the idiots who's goal is to make the chat a negative place cause they are in a bad mood on that particular day. Most times the chat is a fun place to be if you give it a chance.

The usual opening for anyone new is a barrage of "Hey, new guy", then Fish asking The Questions, which are a series of weird questions.

Is that so wrong?

The way I see it is, if someone can't see the humour in those questions then they won't fit in with the chat crowd anyway.

I still don't get the right femur, except symbolising Xalevs obsession with mesurement.

It's just simply that, retarded questions that make silly people laugh. It's not like anyone cares when you're last orgasm was, or how big your right femur is *who in the hell is able to measure a bone inside your skin and muscles anyway*, who knows we're all telling the truth. I would bet that most people lie if they say anything other than I dunno for that question.

Yes, apart from when some folks decided to make it by invitation via certain people only.

They can decide, they can't change anything, the only one with anything approaching power in the chat is Xalev, and hes all for an Open chat from what I understand.

So inshort, whatever wankers want an invitation only chat need to stfu.

Well, you're in the chat more than me obviously and if that's how those questions are then I'll back off. But someone was annoyed and that meant that it could've been stopped before escalation ie. the op. Of course, I don't have a transcript and if she said nothing about it in the chat, you guys wouldn't have known.

Exactly, there is an option for those of us who get annoyed by certain people *I'm not naming names here* to block them and messages from them, simply by clicking on the ignore button for that particular person.

I don't know, I wasn't in the chat when she was there as I have never seen anyone by that name in there before. All I'm saying is that I try to be nice to newcomers and that not everyone is gonna be so rude to her if she decides to come back for a chat :) I think it's just something you have to 'get' in order to tolerate the idiots *or ignore them* If you find that too hard then keep in mind it is an open chat and you don't have to be there. I do tend to agree that there is an awful lot of people who make the chat a horrible place for newcomers but I have learned to ignore that and enjoy my time there when I see fun people in there. People like Chardok and a few others who just make me laugh more often than not.

Ace etc, you seem to missing the point. It's not whether it's open or closed, its whether the people in it tend towards the xenophobic fuckwit end of the scale when dealing with new people. Simple answer is, they do. Just over the past few days I can think of another example, perhaps you werent there for Bunny's great idea of inviting someone that found the chat back in after chasing them off just to get everyone to say "Fuck you" to them...real charming.

Hmn, I had the PC open, got a rough time stamp for that?

And on that note, it dosn't suprise me at all that bunny acted that way.

I wouldn't call it charming so much as funny as hell. Anyway, I IM'd the guy afterwards and he didn't take it hard at all. When I explained that we're just a bunch of deviant goofballs, he actually thought it was funny.

Yes, yes I do. But it's only to get everyone's attention  and to make the room a little more upbeat, unfortunatly most people have started doning gas masks and going on with their lame conversations  I must come up with another plan to make people worship me. The Queen of the chat!
