Kung Fu Hustle Questions [SPOILERS]

Post by Crom »

Some things about Kung Fu Hustle that I wondered about after finishing the movie:

Is Sing the son of the Landlord and Landlady? They said their son died in a fight and that he was about Sing's age. Sing never talks about his family but Sing has been shown to have memory problems.

Why did Sing beat that metal cylinder on top of the light pole? It seemed to be somehow connected to his miraculous regeneration but I wasn't clear how or why he was doing it.

When Sing was Awakened did he intuitively know kung fu or was it actually the Buddhist Palm technique he studied as a child?

What was so effective about the Beast's Toad-style? Sing had trouble blocking it and yet he did not use this against the Landlord and Landlady in their fight.

What was with the Buddha that Sing saw in the sky? Did it simply remind him to use the Palm technique or what? That part seemed really confusing.

Why forgive the Beast and take him on as a student? He has already been shown to be treacherous.

The Landlord talks about how the Beast unblocked Sing's chi, was it the first fight that stunted Sing's potential in the first place?
"Our people were meant to be living gods, warrior-poets who roamed the stars bringing civilization, not cowards and bullies who prey on the weak and kill each other for sport. I never imagined they'd prove themselves so inferior. I didn't betray our people – they betrayed themselves."

On the Beast's 'treachery'. He came out and told the Fated Lovers before he made a single hostile move that he was only interested in killing them or being killed by them. Not testing his skills, not proving which was better, kill or be killed.
Their failure to remember this and acceptance of his supposed surrender is entirely their own stupid fault.

Nah. Sing may not remember much of his past but the Fated Lover's remember that their son had died

If you noticed that when Sing was *horribly* beaten his chi was able to flow freely. The punishment that Sing suffered (with the knives and snakes) only partially and temporarily released his chi

I think both. I guess he learned the moves but mastered it when he was "awakened".

I guess it was The Beast's last ditch effort to defeat Sing. I guess he didn't use it before because it wasn't necessary. It was probably too draining to use?

True and it could also be part of the humour of Buddha appearing and waves a hello? :)

That part bugged me but I guess Sing decided to be the better man and not kill him?

Nah. When he was learning kung fu he was doing well but he wasn't good enough to take on those kids. I guess that turning away from good blocked his chi?

I think it just shows that he's got him so soundly defeated, both physically and psychologically, that he's utterly no threat.

Isn't there also a tradition of defeated opponents forsaking their evil ways and joining the hero as their student, learning the ways of good?
I know that in the Gilgamesh tale something like that happened with the beast-man he fought, but that's not exactly Asian kung-fu fiction...

I think its possible. Sing even without any formal training had some regenerative properties. Perhaps when he was younger he got in a fight and almost died. His saddened parents assumed that his fate would have been sealed and died. Not knowing that their son had those natural kungfu abilities. They left him, and Sing eventually recovered due to his abilities. But due to the fight he had some brain damage and lost his memory of his past.
Why forgive the Beast and take him on as a student? He has already been shown to be treacherous.
Since he could use the Budha hand, he probably took on some aspects of Budha such as his forgiveness and forgave Beast. Or something like that, since Budha forgives a lot of stuff.
