I didn't take the books seriously and I won't take the movie seriously. This is comedy, not a place for "OMFG GIMLI'S BEARD IS ACTUALLY A DARKER SHADE OF BROWN WTF."
I remain cautiously optimistic.

That makes me want to cry. That book is one of my all time favorite books. For an english project my sophmore year in high school, we had to put a quote we found profound from a piece of literature onto wood (she was crazy and liked playing with paints and stencils.) I chose the quote, "Forty-two."
I'm still going to see it opening day though, no matter how much it might suck.

So he says it's supposed to be aweful, So was the T.V. Miniseries. Doesn't matter much to me. Besides, that review is probably just BS.
For him saying it's not close to the book, at this I say, what did you people expect? Of course the movie would mangle the story beyond regognition. Though the rant about product placement in the review was quite amusing.
No one should take any of this seriously, Rember Douglas Adams HIMSELF Worked on the screen play for this movie, it's his Movie.

And like he said...just because Adams wrote doesn't make it good.
If even a tenth of his rants are correct, they might as well claimed it was taken from the ideas of Douglas Adams.
And the reviewer had one point I agree with, regardless of good or bad review, HHGTG is about the dialogue, the story is not even a consideration given the whole thing is like a comdey skit. It's paced and it's witty. If they've neutreed that, might as well spend the ten bucks and watchs Signs...I'll get the same feeling of being ripped off, but it's not because of something I particularly care for.

Yeah, and 'Harmless' is only one word.
That said, I'm not too surprised by the statements made in that review, seeing as they're completely consistent with what I saw in the trailer, namely the replacement of Douglas Adams' witty dialogue and language with cheesy Hollywood-esque slapstick humor and the use of 'kEwL' designs for many of the ships and so on instead of a more silly appearance. (Marvin seems to be the sole exception visible in the trailer).
As for the issue of how much involvement Douglas Adams had, I think this quote from the review pretty much echoes what I think:

Let's start by establishing a few basics. The only two things that matter when judging this film are 'Is it a good movie?' and 'Is it a good version of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy?' One thing which is totally irrelevant is 'How much of it did Douglas Adams write?' Douglas was not the best arbiter of what did or did not work in various versions of Hitchhiker's Guide: much of what we love in the story was created by other people or at least by Douglas in collaboration with other people, and some of his own ideas were wisely dropped from earlier versions. So 'but Douglas came up with that bit himself' is not a valid rejoinder to any criticism of changes made from previous versions.

Well, this sucks. Hitchhiker's Guide w/o the jokes and witty dialogue is worse than Star Wars w/o the Force. Bad news.

Oh and if this is supposed to be Marvin, the makers of this movie should be stoned:

I hate new Marvin. I mean, at least the old one looked... well, pretty much how I imagined him.

I am going to be cynical just because I was really looking forward to this movie. So is there any second review anywhere to be found that concurs with this?

Ever since the trailers I was scared. I was scared at how sleek and serious the ships looked, and how the thing felt like someone was playing Freelancer instead of reading the Guide. But well. Ugh. That review and mostly the 'what's not here' part has my expectations dramatically lowered. Poor Douglas Adams... and yeah, can anyone find another review? If we have two to compare, we can be more sure of how it'll be...

Poor Douglas Adams? Did you read the last two books? In hindsight, I can honestly say that, should this movie indeed suck, it is no surprise. The first two books were golden, after that is just a constant steep downhill. I didn't even read the 5th book because the 4th was barely worth the effort I'd put in to read it.Nephtys wrote:Ever since the trailers I was scared. True. The Fourth was awful.. and was the origional ending, actually. The fifth totally basically retconned the fourth.. and was from what I understand, ghost-written by the publisher, and stamped with the Adams name.Captain Cyran wrote:Poor Douglas Adams? Come now, I think Life, the Universe, and Everything is the funniest of the three! So long... wasn't perfect, but it was pretty good and while Mostly Harmless wasn't the best thing ever, I still enjoyed reading it. Though I seem to recall reading somewhere that the last two books he wrote after more than a little coaxing and dirty looks from his publisher.

I love Life, the Universe and Everything more than anything else.
The book is my favourite, simply because the oddness has gone up by a factor of 3
And if someone didn't know what I was talking about, I'd sound like a hippy >_o

Am I the only one here who enjoyed all five books? I might even point out that in some ways the fifth was finer than the first, though not funnier.
